The refinery’s new Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel unit produces cleanerburning fuel that decreases sulfur content 95 percent compared to past diesel blends. This fuel is used to run everything from tractor-trailers, buses and marine vessels to backhoes, cranes, automobiles and trains. 17 Claudia Roldan, refinery Light-Ends coordinator, uses a handheld device to monitor equipment. Automation continues to improve safety, cost efficiency and reliability. The Baton Rouge complex contains a network of pipe ranging from more than 7 feet in diameter down to lines less than an inch wide. If these lines were connected end-to-end, they would extend more than 10,000 miles. The refinery can process many different crude oils from around the world, from the heaviest to the lightest. It also has leading-edge technology that enables it to process growing volumes of oil produced from the booming shale plays across the country and from oil-sands projects in Canada.
