Teams from all across southern Idaho, two teams from Northern Nevada, and one team from Wyoming competed in the event which included Minico, Burley, and Declo wrestlers from the Mini-Cassia area. There were a total of 28 teams of wrestlers at the invitational. Declo had 10 wrestlers competing and two of them each took second place. Stirland Zollinger took second place in the 126 pound class, winning his fi rst three matches, but losing the championship match to Spring Creek, Nevada’s Dustin Tripp with a 9-4 decision. In the 138 pound class, Josh Phillips also took second place by winning his fi rst four matchups and then losing to Elko, Nevada’s Wade Fry by a 5-2 decision. The Declo Hornets wrestling team took seventh place out of the 28 teams with a total score of 81.5 points. The Burley Bobcats had four wrestlers competing. They were Allen Jeppsen, Joe Dominquez, Travis Osterhout, and Juan Labra. Labra was Burley’s top fi nisher with a third place fi nish in the 195 pound class. Labra won his fi rst two matches and then lost a 7-1 decision to Minico’s Salvador Gutierrez. He then won his last two matches to take third place. Burley fi nished in 24th place with just four wrestlers who earned 31.0 points. The Minico Spartans took 13 wrestlers and seven of those place in fourth place or higher. In the 126 pound class Isaiah Alvarado fi nished in fourth place after winning his fi rst three matches and then losing to Spring Creek, Nevada’s Dustin Tripp by a 7-2 decision. He then went on to beat Canyon Ridge’s Alex Leblanc by a 9-4 decision and then lost to North Freemont’s Omar Labra to earn fourth place. Another fourth place fi nisher for the Spartans was Austin Gilchrist in the 138 pound class. He SPO SPORTS TS won his fi rst match, but lost his second match to Declo’s Josh Phillips by a 5-4 decision. Gilchrist went on to win his next three matches and lost his last match to Parma’s Scott Jensen by an 8-4 decision. Taking third place was 285 pound Dakota Madrigal, who won his fi rst match and then lost to Cole McGinnis of Gooding. Hhe then went on to beat Mountain Home’s Mike Gordon by a fall and North Freemont’s Tyrel Goebel by a 1-0 decision. The Spartans had four wrestlers who took fi rst place. First was Tanner Sessions from Mountain Home, then North Freemont’s Haiden Martindale, Emmett’s Hunter Kelly, Jaden Loveland of South Freemont, and the fi nal match was against Star Valley, Wyoming’s Carbon Kennington, whom he beat by a 7-1 decision. Next up was 170 pound David Borden. Borden took fi rst place by beating North Freemont’s Luke Blanchard, Star Valley, Wyoming’s Marshall Watkins, Emmett’s Drew Peterson, and then Nick CdeBaca of Spring Creek, Nevada by a 13-5 decision. Salvador Gutierrez at 195 pounds took fi rst place. He beat Mountain Home’s John Ryan, Battle Mountain, Nevada’s David Sanchez, Burley’s Juan Labra, and Star Valley, Wyoming’s Jordan Semadeni. Joseph Valencia was the last Spartan to take fi rst place. He wrestled in the 220 pound class and beat Filer’s Jordan Nitz, Jerome’s Jade Parsons, Battle Moutain, Nevada’s Tugi Cordova, and Buhl’s Oren Carlton. The Spartans took fi rst place with 176.0 points followed by Spring Creek, Nevada who took second place with 160.0 points and third placed went to Star Valley, Wyoming with 134.5 points. The Spartans will compete this Friday and Saturday in Elko, Nevada before returning home to host Pocatello and Buhl on Tuesday.
