By Stacey Hughey Weekly News Journal BURLEY – That question will be answered after it was approved last week by the Cassia County Commissioners to have the former Swensen’s building located at the corner of Overland Avenue and 16th Street tested for environmental safety. The building was purchased by the county and will eventually be the home of the Cassia County Courthouse Judicial Annex. In November, the commissioners and members of the building committee chose an LCA architect fi rm based out of Boise to handle the needed remodel of the building. LCA requested approval for the $2,785 cost of the assessment plus an additional $625 for a lead sampling analysis. LCA reported that the company can have the assessment completed by the end of January, thus allowing a clearance for the contractors to come in and start work on the building. “We need to have this done before we send anybody in here to work,” said County Administrator Kerry McMurray. The commissioners approved the expense for the company to go ahead and do the assessment on the former grocery store building. Commissioners hope to proceed into the construction remodel throughout the winter. Any tips would be appreciated. Overwhelmed Senior Dear Overwhelmed, Organizing your important papers and personal information is a smart move and a great gift to your loved ones. Here are some tips to help you get started. Get Organized The fi rst step in getting your affairs in order is to gather up all your important personal, fi nancial and legal information so you can arrange it in a format that will benefi t you now, and your loved ones later. Then you’ll need to sit down and create various lists of important information and instructions of how you want certain things handled when you die or if you become incapacitated. Here’s a checklist of areas you need to focus on. Personal Information • • • • • • • • • Contacts: Make a master list of names and phone numbers of close friends, family, clergy, doctors, and professional advisers such as your lawyer, accountant, broker and insurance agent. Personal documents: Include such items as your birth certifi cate, Social Security card, marriage license, military discharge papers, etc. Secured places: List all the places you keep under lock and key or protected by password, such as safe deposit boxes, safe combination, security alarms, etc. Service providers: Provide contact information of the companies or people who provide you regular services such as utility companies, lawn service, etc. Pets: If you have a pet, give instructions for the care of the animal. End of life: Indicate your wishes for organ, tissue or body donation including documentation (see donatelife.net), and write out your funeral instructions. If you’ve made pre-arrangements with a funeral home include a copy of agreement, their contact information and whether you’ve prepaid or not. Legal Documents Will: Include the original copy of your will and other estate planning documents you’ve made. Power of attorney: This names someone you trust to handle money matters if you’re incapacitated. If you don’t have a will or power of attorney, do-it-yourself resources like legalzoom.com can help you create them for a few dollars. Advance directives: These documents – a living will and medical power of attorney – spell out your wishes regarding your end-of-life medical • • • • • • • Jim Miller treatment when you can no longer make decisions for yourself. Financial Records Income and debt: Make a list of all income sources such as pensions, Social Security, IRAs, 401Ks, interest, investments, etc. And do the same for any debt you may have – mortgage, credit cards, medical bills, car payment. Financial accounts: List all bank and brokerage accounts (checking, savings, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, IRAs, etc.) and their contact information. And keep current statements from each institution in your fi les. Company benefi ts: List any retirement plans, pensions or benefi ts from your current or former employer including the contact information of the benefi ts administrator. Insurance: List the insurance policies you have (life, longterm care, home, auto, Medicare, Medigap, prescription drug, etc.) including the policy numbers, insurance agents and phone numbers. Credit cards: List all credit and charge cards, including the card numbers and contact information. Property: List real estate, vehicles and other properties you own, rent or lease and include documents such as deeds, titles, and loan or lease agreements. Taxes: Keep copies of tax returns for seven years and the contact information of your tax preparer. Keep all your organized information and fi les together in one convenient location – ideally in a fi reproof fi ling cabinet or safe in your home. Also be sure to review and update it every year, and don’t forget to tell your loved ones where they can fi nd it. The reporting party followed the Lincoln to the church on 6th and Elba. 18:42 Update on Missing Male – Safe Haven Healthcare reported that they received a phone call from the male subject who had left their facility earlier. He told them that he is staying at a local motel in town. 19:31 Fifth Offense in Five Years – Oscar Tenorio Aragon, age 22, of Wendell, was arrested during a traffi c stop near 295 North Overland Avenue for Driving Without Privileges. Aragon was pulled over for having a headlight out. According to the arrest report, this is allegedly his fi fth offense for Driving Without Privileges within the last fi ve years. 20:02 Citation – Alisha Dawn Glaesemann, age 25, was issued a citation for not having a valid driver’s license. The charge was later amended to having an “expired driver’s license”. 20:11 Cows May Cause Accident – A person advised that there are about four black cows out on the road at 1150 East 600 North in Jackson and that you can’t see them until you are right up on them. 20:56 Traffi c Complaint – A male reported that there is a large tree blocking one lane of traffi c at 50 West 525 South. The Highway Department was advised. 21:01 Power Lines Down – It was reported that there are power lines down at 635 East 400 South and they are hanging dangerously close to the road. Power company was advised. Cassia County Incident Reports 21:21 Power Poles Down – A male advised that there are several power poles down on 1500 West and there is another that looks like it is about to snap. If it does it will be completely blocking 1000 South. 21:30 Car Accident – A driver of a silver Hyundia Elantra reported that he slid off Interstate 86 while heading westbound and then went back on the road. Now his vehicle is blocking traffi c. 23:45 Power Lines Down – An Oakley resident reported that there are a number of power poles down across the road at 600 West 900 South. 23:54 Fire – It was reported that there is a power pole or transformer on fi re at 450 South Highway 27. The road will be closed until Idaho Power is able to take care of the lines. 12-31-11 00:47 Power Lines Down – Idaho Power advised that there are approximately four poles down on 1400 South between 1000 South and 1300 South. They would like the road shut down until they are able to fi x the power poles. The road was later closed with assistance from the Murtaugh Highway District on 1400 West from 1000 South to 1300 South. 02:02 Road Closures – Murtaugh Highway District advised that the Murtaugh Highway will be closed until Idaho Power is able to respond and get the power lines back up. “ 04:16 Citation – Julian Daniel Perez, age 24, was cited for failing to purchase a driver’s license. 11:45 Found Articles – A male reported that he found a red snowboard in case someone calls about it. 07:46 Vicious Dogs – A man reported that he was attacked by two of his neighbor’s German Shepherd dogs. He stated this is not the fi rst time this has happened and he would like to sign a complaint. A deputy will respond back later to issue a written warning to the dog’s owner. 09:06 Vehicle Theft – A Burley resident came to the Sheriff’s offi ce to report a vehicle theft. 09:13 Car Accident – A one vehicle roll over was reported at Steer Basin in Cassia County. No injuries were reported. 09:44 Theft – A male reported that someone stole his dog’s kennel. Theft occurred on the 400 block of East 24th Street. 09:56 Damaged Property – A damage to property / vandalism report was completed regarding 600 East Main Street in Oakley. 11:08 Stolen Car Returned – The male who reported his vehicle stolen called to advise that it was returned to him. 11:33 Information – It was reported that the entrance to the golf course is partially blocked by a tree that has blown down. 12:32 Found Articles – A resident on the 500 block of Milner Road reported that he found a cell phone in front of his house. 14:17 Animal Violation – A resident living on the 200 block of West 27th Street advised that he is home now if the deputy still needs to talk to him. The home owner was issued a written warning for having dogs at large. 16:10 Suspicious Incident – A mother reported that her 15 year old daughter was out last night with her friend. When the parent located them, they were with an 18 year old male who claims to be a public safety offi cer. 16:18 Alleged Child Abuse – An anonymous person reported that a male subject has locked his three small children out of the house. He let the two smaller kids in but not the oldest child who is about age seven or eight. The person reported that this happens a lot. 16:33 Vicious Dog – A deputy advised that he was fl agged down on the 1000 block of Conant Avenue regarding a vicious dog at this location. 16:31 Battery – An Idaho Milk truck driver reported that another truck driver dragged him out of his semi and hit him. He does not need an ambulance. 18:54 Power Out – Goode Motor on Overland Avenue reported that they have no power at their business. 19:04 Car Accident – A male driver reported that he has slid off the road and hit a power pole at 550 East 200 South.
