4 Weekly News Journal Thursday, January 12, 2012 FLDS hope for support from Commissioners By Lisa Dayley Weekly News Journal RUPERT – The FLDS church hopes the Minidoka County Commissioners will help spring their much beloved, albeit troubled, leader Warren Jeffs from the slammer. The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS) has inundated the commissioners with letters of warnings if it doesn’t put pressure on Texas authorities to release the FLDS Prophet. “I’ve been getting one every day,” County Clerk Patty Temple said. “Every week we have a stack of letters,” Commissioner Kent McClellan said. The Texas courts recently sentenced Jeffs to life in prison plus 20 years after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting two girls after claiming God asked him to BURLEY – Every kind of parent needs a break once in a while. Magic Valley Youth and Adult Services (MVYAS) of Twin Falls is coming to Burley to provide a training for those interested in becoming a respite provider for foster parents. MVYAS explains that a respite provider is a certifi ed and trained person who can provide a break, or “respite,” for a foster parent. “A respite provider helps to support the foster program by providing a relief for our foster parents on the front lines, while the respite provider also gets to know and care for a youth in foster care.” Sherri Wolters, MVYAS marry the girls – one as young as 13. Jeffs, 55, will spend 45 years in prison before he’s eligible for parole. In the meantime, authorities have caught Jeffs preaching to his fl ock during which time he’s apparently instructed them to ask other government entities – like respite instructor, explains that, “Respite care gives foster parents that much needed break, so they the Minidoka County Commissioners – to help return him to his congregation. They want to help but do not have the time to do it full time.” The level of time commitment is up to the provider. “Currently our respite providers are, on average, being called upon once every fi ve weeks to provide care for youth, typically for a day or two. Placement is dependent upon your availability and level of comfort in dealing with the disclosed behaviors,” Wolters said. Respite providers and foster parents negotiate a reimbursement rate (often the pro-rated amount foster parents receive from the state), though some respite providers do not ask for insist that they are “Revelation of the Lord Jesus Christ Given to President Warren S. Jeffs.” The revelations warn that the Gospel according to Jeffs is not being heeded. It threatens famine, mob rule, murder and an invasion by foreign governments. It also warns of Satan worship and all kinds of nasty natural disasters unless everyone repents, lets Jeffs free and follows his teachings. The letters also come with order forms for various other FLDS literature if the county should be interested. The literature costs between $3 and $10. Yet, the county has no plans to respond. Considering that it costs the FLDS nearly $7 to send its literature to the commissioners, it is apparently costing the group a pretty penny. “I don’t have any problem with refusing them,” Moore said. Bureau of Reclamation expects snow By Lisa Dayley Weekly News Journal BURLEY – Despite spring like conditions in December and this month, the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) expects Mini- Cassia to receive plenty of snow in the ensuing weeks. Yet snow falls are down a bit from the 18 inches of snow water equivalent experienced last year. “This year we have 11 inches of water equivalent. We would only have seven inches except for the last week of the month in December,” said BOR Water Operations Manager and hydrologic engineer Mike Beaus. While it may feel like spring, more snow is predicted, and the water situation isn’t as bleak as it appears, he said. “For the upper portion of the Snake River, it’s a little better off than most of Idaho. The snow pack is not too much of a concern at this point,” he said. The reservoirs are also at 71 percent. “This is just coincidence that our system is at 71 percent full. Last year there were also concerns about snow levels, but by spring the situation improved signifi cantly. April proved to be an extraordinarily wet month, Beaus said. “That’s also the month we usually expect snow packs to decline. Instead we were still building last year,” he said. Yes, it does feel like spring outside said Beaus, who recalled that at this time in 2011, it felt more like winter. “The fi rst few days of January last year were very cold. The highs were in the teens, but the middle of January we got into the high 40s again. That does contrast to the last week where we went from the mid-50s down to the low 30s and back up to the mid 40s,” he said. On January 1 of this year temperatures were at 38 degrees compared to last year at 17. The next day it was again 38 degrees, signifi cantly higher than the 18 degrees in 2011. By January 3, Mini-Cassia experienced 48 degrees compared to the 14 degrees in 2011. By January 4, it was 48 outside but was only 14 degrees last year. By the fi fth, it was 55 degrees compared to 30 degrees last year. Beaus says it’s been warm enough for him to ride his motorcycle to work three times last week. Cassi participates in the Teen Reading Club at the Burley Public Library, she is a member of the Mini-Cassia In-Line Hockey graduated from Seminary and also earned his Eagle Scout and Duty to God awards. He has worked for several local farmers and dairymen. He attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah for one semester previous to receiving his mission call. Elder Drew A. Bailey has been called to serve in the Novosibirsk Russia Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Drew will be speaking January 22nd at 2:45 pm in the Pella 2nd Ward. David was born June 29, 1978, in Twin Falls, ID, to Owen and Vicky Walters. He lived in Twin Falls and attended high school there. In 1997, he moved to Arizona. He married Cynthia Adams in 2000. David competed in bareback riding in high school and later in Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Colorado.
