ARBURG THERMOLIFT 100-2:
Combined conveying and drying enhances material properties
www.arburg.com
Optimum preparation of materials
Optimum fl ow characteristics for
plastics are a basic pre-requisite for
the quality of moulded parts. Such
characteristics can be optimised by
the correct conveying and drying of
the materials before processing.
The reduction of residual moisture in the
plastic granulate and the prevention of
moisture deposits on it are basic prerequisites
for high-quality injection
mouldings. ARBURG
THERMOLIFT 100-2
allows all types of plastic to be dried
and conveyed to the injection moulding
machine by a single piece of equipment.
Problems caused by water absorption
or water deposits on the plastic
granulate can thus be avoided. In this
way, the granulate is always optimally
prepared for production and therefore
can be processed without
any problems. Combined drying and
conveying – that is the great advantage
of the THERMOLIFT 100-2
from ARBURG.
3
The THERMOLIFT 100-2 was developed
in order to guarantee optimum granulate
preparation alongside the machine.
In addition it was necessary for a mobile
unit to be linked to an injection moulding
machine. Particularly interesting in
this regard is the ability to combine drying
and conveying in a closed material
loop. This ensures that outside infl uences
can no longer have an effect on
the material and allows for consistent
high-quality production. The sub-processes
of the THERMOLIFT can be fully
integrated into the overall production
cycle via SELOGICA machine control.
Compact design, easily
accessible components
The compact modular design, small space
requirement and easily integrated options
make the THERMOLIFT 100-2 extremely
user-friendly. All options can be easily added
or converted.
Optimum heat insulation
The material hopper is insulated as a standard
feature in order to keep heat loss to a
minimum and to achieve uniform heating of
the granulate.
Combined drying and conveying
Features
• Fresh and recirculating air modes
• Dry air module with silica gel rotor
(optional)
• Pressure conveying
• Manual fi lling
• Automatic fi lling with vacuum conveying
(optional)
control systems of injection moulding
machines
The main advantage of dried
air conveying
THERMOLIFT can be equipped to allow for
conveying using dry air. This ensures that no
water can be absorbed into the material, either
during conveying or in the compression
phase within the granulate feed controller. It
is not necessary to adjust the conveyed
quantities since this is automatically achieved
by means of the compression principle.
5
High fl exibility: drying and conveying in a single operation
6
Samples are easy to take Air fi lter
The ARBURG THERMOLIFT 100-2 utilises
convection drying, whereby heated air
circulates around the granulate. This
enables drying processes to be carried
out in the shortest time possible.
Ease of handling
The sliding bar for operating with fresh air
or circulating air, the large sealing cover,
easy cleaning and sample removal and
well-arranged control system guarantee effi
cient and safe operation. The inner container,
which is made of stainless steel, is
corrosion resistant.
Clean running: fi lter for exhaust and
recirculating air
In both fresh air and dry air modes, exhaust
air from the THERMOLIFT is discharged into
the environment. An air fi lter protects the
environment and is used particularly when
recycled material or ground material is being
processed, or if new material containing
a proportion of dust or glass fi bre is being
processed. When the circulating air mode is
used, the fi lter serves to protect the drying
fan from dust particles.
Easy-to-use: the THERMOLIFT control unit
Programming with SELOGICA control unit
The THERMOLIFT is operated by means
of a control unit with keyboard and
LED display. During the initial confi guration,
the components to be activated
when the unit is switched on can be
selected. It is therefore no longer necessary
for individual functions such as
heating, air drier, interval operation
etc. to be switched on manually.
Automatic switch-on and shut-down
The THERMOLIFT control unit features a
real-time clock. With this, the THERMOLIFT
can be programmed to start on a pre-set
day at a particular time and switch off on
another day, for example.
A second programming level enables the
machine to switch itself on and off at the
same times every day. The current temperature
value is permanently shown on the
display of the THERMOLIFT control unit.
Interface connector
Interval operation
Interval operation enables the fan to switch
off for a set timed period and to start up
again after a set “off“ period has elapsed.
This causes variations in pressure, thus preventing
any conveying blockages.
Control unit interface
The control unit can be fi tted with an interface
which makes communication between
the THERMOLIFT and the machine control
unit possible.
Interface operation is suitable for all
ALLROUNDERs with DIALOGICA and
SELOGICA control systems.
This has the following advantages:
• The THERMOLIFT is operated directly
from the machine control unit.
• Times for switching on and off, operating
temperatures and temperature reductions
can be programmed on the
ALLROUNDER screen and monitored.
• The settings are stored along with the
rest of the data.
Digital alarm signals
With this option, any faults arising in the
THERMOLIFT 100-2 can be indicated via a
signal unit (warning light and/or audio
alarm) fi xed either on the outside or directly
on the rear wall. Faults can thus be detected
and rectifi ed at an early stage.
7
Perfectly equipped: three drying alternatives to choose from
8
Drying hopper for granulate made of stainless steel
Depending on the quality of the material
or the requirements for the parts,
the THERMOLIFT can operate either in
fresh-air mode, recirculating-air mode
or dry-air mode (optional).
Fresh-air mode
In fresh-air mode, air is drawn in from outside
and heated by a heating element to the
maximum drying temperature for the granulate
used. Following this, the heated air is
led off into the drying container. The heated
air circulates around the granulate and the
moisture in the granulate is released. The
damp exhaust air is discharged.
Recirculating-air mode
The recirculating-air mode operates with a
closed air circuit. After the drying process,
the air is directed back to the fan. Fresh air
is only drawn in to compensate for any lack
of air for conveying the material. Thus, it is
possible to operate the device in a very energy-saving
manner. The device can be
switched from fresh-air mode to circulatingair
mode by operating a sliding bar.
An installed dry-air module
Dry-air mode (optional)
With dry-air mode, fresh air which has been
drawn in is pre-dried before heating.
The water absorption capacity of the air is
thus increased.
This further increases the drying capacity of
the THERMOLIFT considerably.
Silica gel rotor
The main part of the dry-air module is the
silica gel rotor. This consists of a honeycomb-shaped
carrier material, to which the
moisture-absorbing layer is applied.
This design provides a very large surface
area for the air to pass over in order to be
dried. During operation the rotor rotates
constantly, so that there is always a section
being regenerated while the prepared sector
is available for air drying.
Connector for dew point sensor
For control purposes during ongoing production,
a dew point sensor can be attached
to an existing threaded bushing in
the area after the air outlet of the air drier.
Optimum handling: manual or automatic fi lling
10
Hinged lid Hopper
Manual fi lling
The basic version of the THERMOLIFT is
manually fi lled. The device can optionally
be equipped with a hinged lid (this
option cannot be used with the 100 litre
container attachment).
As a further optional equipment item for
manual fi lling, a lid with a fi lling hopper is
available. This enables the THERMOLIFT to
be supplied with material without the device
having to be switched off.
Automatic fi lling (optional)
Automatic fi lling of the THERMOLIFT is used
when it is necessary to have consistent
high-quality results over a long period of
time. In order to achieve this, the fi lling
level, and therefore the processing/drying
time, must remain consistently high.
Optional vacuum conveying
Vacuum conveying device 100 litre container attachment
Vacuum conveying
The vacuum conveying equipment necessary
for automatic fi lling is mounted on the
prepared cover of the THERMOLIFT (this option
can also be used with the 100 litre container
attachment). Control of the vacuum
conveying equipment, the programming of
the necessary parameters and the monitoring
of the capacity sensor in the container
are undertaken by the control system of the
THERMOLIFT 100-2.
Accessories for vacuum conveying
The vacuum conveying equipment can draw
in granulate from various material supply
sources, such as octabins or other
containers. This can happen either directly
via the hose, which is supplied, or via a suction
pipe (with or without fi lter).
Manifold
A manifold for use with the vacuum conveying
equipment is also available as an option.
The manifold is capable of conveying a
maximum of two materials and can be easily
attached to the conveying connector. The
mixing ratio can be adjusted by percentage,
as can the number of material layers per
conveying cycle. The stainless steel construction
allows for high-quality feeding operation
which offers protection to the material
used.
Operating principle
The conveying device is mounted on the
cover of the THERMOLIFT and draws the
granulate from the material reservoir. If material
is needed, the outlet fl ap of the conveying
device closes. The fi lling level sensor
transmits an “empty“ signal to the control
unit, the vacuum device switches on and
begins drawing air .
The plastic granulate is also conveyed
through the material feed line by the current
of air being drawn in. A fi lter in the conveying
device separates the material. At the end
of the conveying time set using SELOGICA,
the suction device is switched off.
The suction method is mainly used where
ground material from a sprue grinder is to
be mixed in, or with materials which are
diffi cult to convey.
Safe feed: pressure or vacuum conveying
Standard feed regulator
Granulate feed regulator in conveying mode
Granulate feed regulator fi lled
12
Granulate feed regulator with hopper
There are two alternatives available on
the THERMOLIFT for conveying the
dried material to the feed opening of
the injection unit.
Pressure method
In its standard confi guration, the
THERMOLIFT 100-2 operates using pressure
conveying. With this method, the dried
granulate is conveyed out of the
THERMOLIFT by air pressure. This is done
using the drying fan. With the aid of a feed
regulator located above the feed opening of
the injection unit, only the precise amount
of material actually required in the machine
at any given moment is fed in. Since the
correct quantity of material is always
present, and this material is also continually
being dried with a specifi cally-defi ned proportion
of drying air, the granulate cannot,
in practice, absorb any more moisture
between the drier and the injection moulding
machine.
Granulate feed regulator with hopper
The feed regulator consists of a funnelshaped
container with a fi ltering device and is
fi tted in place of the standard feeding equipment.
This option must be used when it is
essential to have a surplus of material above
the injection unit in order to avoid dosage
errors to the injection moulding machine.
Feeding two machines
With the THERMOLIFT 100-2, it is also possible
to feed two injection moulding machines.
This requires the use of a distributor
on which two feed regulators (standard
regulators or feed regulators with hopper)
are fi tted.
Mounts for granulate feed regulator and/or fi lter
Accessories for standard
pressure conveying
• Filter for feed regulator/dust collection
(can be used with both feed regulator
variants)
• Clamps for sliding bars and connectors/
reducing adaptors for use with older
ARBURG injection moulding machines
• Retainers for fi xing feed regulators to
the rear of the THERMOLIFT
Suction method (optional)
Instead of the standard pressure conveying,
the material can also optionally be conveyed
via a vacuum system. The dried granulate
is conveyed from the THERMOLIFT 100-2
by a vacuum conveying device installed on
the injection moulding machine by
the customer.
Operating principle
The conveying device is mounted over the
feed opening of the injection unit and sucks
the granulate from the THERMOLIFT 100-2.
If material is needed, the outlet fl ap of the
conveying device closes. The fi lling level
sensor transmits an “empty“ signal to the
control unit, the suction device switches on
and begins drawing air .
The plastic granulate is also conveyed
through the material feed line by the current
of air being drawn in. A fi lter in the conveying
device separates the material. At the end
of the conveying time set using SELOGICA,
the vacuum device is switched off.
Vacuum conveying is mainly used where
ground material from a sprue grinder is to
be mixed in, or with materials which are
