year,'' Mr. Madrigal stated. "You
assisted many of our brethren in
hardships and sorrows brought about
by catastrophies. You cxtetided corn-
fort and relief. The churches henelitcd
much by your assistance."
Agusting Vencer, corresponding
secretary of CALL and prominent
attorney in Manila, was in charge of
the opening ceremonies Thurhday
morning. We sang the CALI. hymn.
"My Brother. Take the Cross." and
then the national anthem ofthe Philip-
pines. Asterio I:yhuca. 1);1\;1o CAL.1.
president. brought greetings.
In my message that morning I tried
to challenge the men to keep laith with
their past. I spoke ol the rnc>rc than
eighty >ears of Alliance ministry in
North Anieric;~ and the more than
seventy ).cars of Alliancc ministry in
the Philippines. 1 urged the men to
rememhcr the "basics" that Iiavc been
our heritage: i;~itli, prayer. the Word,
tellowship, pioneering. work. Chris-
tian courage. If these arc to be passed
on, the men of CALI. and Alliance
Men must pass them on.
l'hc afternoons and evenings werc
taken up with group discussions and
seminars. Among the topics discussed
and lorces w~th moreand more laymen
being gi~cn responsibilities."
I told thcrn I saw Alliance Mcn and
CA1.L moving away from mere
orpiniz;~tion, important as organization
is. to ;I major thrust of ministry.
The rcvicnl of personal witness and lay
participation in church extension must
continue and increase.
On the closing morning one of the
delegates addressed a written question
to me. He was concerned because so
often the enthusiasm of ;I national
coniercnce dies as the delcgi~tes leturn
home. "Hou can nvc overcome this
lethargy so that we laymen will he not
only hearers hut doers of tlie things ol
God?"
llle Holy Spirit had directcd the
quchtion. Qua) Owens and Walter
Meloon each testified as to how God
had cdled them to ;I fuil-time commit-
ment to .lcsus Christ. fhcyemphasizcd
that laymen can he called to "full-time
ministry" whatever their vocation.
It was my responsibility to clohe the
meeting. I quoted tlie final part of
Matthew 2:12: The? departed into
their o\w country another way." I told
them that dtcr having scen our
Alliiince missionary work and now
were 'The L;~)rncn and the Prc;~clii~~g hsbing spent Sour days with the men of
Pastor at Work." "Hou CA1.L. Can
Ihe thcme for the second day was
"Where 110 We Go from Hcre?" We
work. and that some lay peoplc do not
work because they lee1 inadequ~tcl)
trained.
I pointed out that in the past leu
years thcre has been an increuing
emphasis on total involvement oi the
memhcrship. "Alliance Met1 in hortli
America and CALL in thc I'hilippines
