“One kind word can warm three winter
months.” -Japanese Proverb
I don’t know about you, but January is
not my favorite time of year. The harsh
winds of winter, the early onset of darkness
and the endless snow just wear me
down. Snow is pretty in December when
you’re dreaming of a white Christmas.
Snow in January is just cold.
How I long for a bit of warmth when I
start my car or walk my dog! When I saw
the quote, “One kind word can warm
three winter months,” I realized I had
discovered the key to a new outlook on
winter. If a kind word can completely
change one’s outlook, then a kind act can
change someone’s life. How true!
HHS Executive Director, Lori Halligan
with Nicky, a Maltese/Shih Tzu who was
rescued from a puppy mill auction
Our volunteers walk dogs in below zero
wind chills and they brave icy roads to
come to the Hinsdale Humane Society to
play with the felines. Just think what that
means to a homeless dog or cat who resides
here! People adopt animals in spite
of abysmal weather. It makes a huge difference
in the life of the dog or cat. But
adopting also warms the hearts of the
family who finds a forever friend.
So Long Rusty
Rusty, the long roaming stray dog from Oak Brook, has safely arrived at his
new home at Best Friends Animal Society in Utah. After 3 to 4 years of living
on his own and depending upon strangers for his next meal, Rusty was finally
captured on September 20, 2010 and brought to the Hinsdale Humane Society.
From the first day of his arrival,
Rusty has been very leery of people,
and understandably so. During his
years on the streets, he was always
able to keep a respectable distance
within his comfort zone. Life in captivity,
however, proved to be difficult
for Rusty. He seemed depressed.
He staged a hunger strike. The only
time he wagged his tail was when he
was in the company of other dogs.
So a difficult decision was made in
late November to transfer Rusty to
Best Friends Dogtown Sanctuary,
where he could live in the company
of other dogs while receiving rehabilitative
training to learn to trust
humans. Best Friends accepts less
than 1% of the 2000 applications
they receive monthly, so we were
very pleased to know Rusty could
live there. But it was a bittersweet
decision. Rusty would have to leave
familiar territory and the people
who cared for him.
Rusty
Rusty receiving treatment for heartworm at
Arboretum View Animal Hospital
"We wanted the storybook ending;
for him to be back in the neighborhood
that loved him, in a home, sitting down with the family on the couch
watching television," said Lori Halligan, Executive Director. "But that isn't
what would have made him happy. That's what would have made us happy."
A further complication of Rusty’s stay at HHS was his advanced case of heartworm
infestation. Had Rusty not been captured when he was, there is no question
he would have succumbed from his heartworm disease and very likely
would not have made it through the winter. His most recent blood work shows
he will require further medication for heartworms once he is settled at Best
Friends in spite of three previous rounds of treatment.
Rusty’s ongoing care and support has been made possible by many individuals
who have made donations to pay for his medical care and transportation to
Utah.
So Long Rusty....continued from page 1
While we cannot know everyone who has helped, we want to acknowledge his
trustees, Harry and RonnDa Peters, Mike Gutjahr, and James Bradley.
You probably know that Rusty was a “village mascot” for Oak Brook and much
beloved by all who worried about his well being. Rusty’s many friends at Folletts
Higher Education Group, the Windsor corporate business park, the Forrest Glen
Homeowners Association, Oak Brook Police Department and Steve Arfenbarker
Facebook fans have gone “above and beyond” to ensure that Rusty had all the
comforts of home while he was convalescing with us at HHS.
Rusty is the most famous
resident of Hinsdale Humane
Society since Morris
the cat. So it is fitting
that he had a grand farewell
party on January 14,
complete with a police
escort and camera toting
members of the media.
What is especially surprising
is that Rusty, the dog
so shy around humans,
seemed to “work the
Rusty greets his admiring fans at his farewell party
crowd.” He bravely came
right up to people and
allowed many admirers a chance for a final farewell touch. He seemed to pose for
the paparazzi and perform for the television cameras. “I was completely flabbergasted
at his behavior,” said Halligan.
Many people were moved to tears at the sight of their favorite, elusive canine during
his farewell party. After about 15 minutes of receiving his admirers, Rusty
returned to the Hinsdale Humane Society van for his personal chauffeur, Jennifer
Vlazny HHS Operations Manager to drive him 1600 miles to Kanab, Utah.
We are happy to report that Rusty has started his new life at Best Friends. Although
he has been there only a few days, he has already worked his charm on the
staff of Best Friends who say, “He’s an absolute sweetheart.” One important note:
Rusty’s name is now Red, as Best Friends already had several dogs named Rusty
and wanted to avoid further confusion.
All of Red’s followers wish him well in his new surroundings. I think Jennifer
Vlazny speaks for all of us when she says, “I must admit, though, I am going to
miss the little fellow!” All photos of Rusty compliments of DMS Photography, Diane Smutney
In Memory of Robert J. Jedlick
The Hinsdale Humane Society gratefully
acknowledges a generous
bequest from the estate of Robert J.
Jedlick, to be used to continue our
work of assisting and placing animals.
Mr. Jedlick raised and showed
Bedlington terriers and was a lifelong
supporter of animal welfare causes.
He was a school librarian for 30
years and was known as a scholar
and a good friend. According to a
close friend, “He is now at peace in
Heaven, probably walking his dogs
Dickens, Beckett and Chadwick who
preceded him there.”
If you’d like more information about
including the Hinsdale Humane Society
in your will or trust, please contact
Lori Halligan, Executive Director
at 630-323-0251.
In Memory of
Vernon Goers, former owner of
Vern Goers Greenhouse, recently
passed away at the age of 84. The
Goers family have been long time
friends and supporters of Hinsdale
Humane Society.
Ruth Ann Wolfe Cordin, died November
6, 2010 at the age of 92. She
served as president of HHS from
1961-1962 and was instrumental in
our early history.
We are often contacted by families
and funeral directors about making
charitable gifts to honor the memory
of a departed loved one. Memorial
gifts are listed in our Winter and
Summer quarterly newsletter. An
acknowledgement is sent to the family
to announce the gift, and the giver
receives a thank you letter. Memorial
gifts are used for our operational
needs such as animal care and medications.
As a final reminder, we respect the
privacy of all our donors and
friends. A gift made to HHS will be
used and acknowledged in a manner
which the giver feels most comfortable.
We never share our mailing list
with other charitable organizations.
“Pennies for Paws” 2011 Spare Change Drive, April 11 - May 16th
We have raised over $9,000 in spare change in the past two years!
Sign up your school, classroom, or group to participate in the 3rd
annual “Pennies for Paws” spare change drive. In the past two
years, we have raised over $9,000 in spare change! That’s a lot of
change - helping a lot of animals. The kids enjoy knowing that
are making a difference in the lives of homeless animals. They
love learning that their classrooms’ collected change of $100 allows us to care
for a homeless dog for five days. Or that $75 collected will pay for medicine for
five sick cats or dogs. And just $10 will buy a case of canned dog food.
Join the Hinsdale Humane Society and area schools as we work together to help
raise awareness of homeless pets, to educate hundreds of children, and to make a
difference in our community. Classrooms can also request free animal related
lesson plans and classroom presentations. Classrooms, students, children’s clubs
or groups are invited to collect spare change for the Hinsdale Humane Society.
They can win great prizes, too, including movie tickets, pizza, and trophies.
To sign up your classroom, school, or group for the upcoming spare change
drive, call 630-323-5630 x17 or email pam@hinsdalehumanesociety.org
Ask Jenny…HHS Operations Manager &
Obedience Instructor, Jennifer Vlazny, answers pet
related questions and offers practical advice.
Q. I’ve heard conflicting information regarding when to spay my pet. Can
you share any insight? John, Frankfort
A. February is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month and a perfect time to address
the topic. There are a myriad of medical and behavioral benefits to
spaying or neutering your dog or cat, so much so that veterinarians routinely
include them in their overall health care recommendations to pet owners. Today,
however, the question is not as much whether to perform the surgery, but
when.
The old teaching in veterinary schools was that animals must be at least six
months of age and that females should experience their first heat cycle and
males reach sexual maturity. Some veterinarians even felt it was beneficial for
a female to have at least one litter prior to spaying surgery. Regrettably,
planned as well as accidental litters frequently occurred and contributed to the
homeless animal crisis and euthanasia of millions of animals each year. Current
research, however, shows that spaying females prior to their first heat
dramatically reduces the risk of mammary tumors later in life, and neutering a
male prior to sexual maturity not only has many health benefits, but lessens
the risk of developing inappropriate behaviors such as roaming, urinemarking,
and testosterone-induced aggression.
As a result of medical research and advancement, many animal shelters and
veterinarians are now spaying and neutering animals as young as two months.
While there is still on-going controversy among currently practicing veterinarians,
pediatric spaying/neutering is now being routinely taught in veterinary
schools as part of their regular curriculum. The American Veterinary
Medical Association and the American Animal Hospital Association are just
two of the many professional organizations that support pediatric neutering.
When making the decision as to when to alter your pet, it is best to consult
with your own veterinarian who can advise you on what is best for your individual
animal. Whether the surgery is done as young as two months of age or
months later, having your pet spayed or neutered is a very vital component of
being a responsible pet owner.
Directors Desk continued from page 1
In this issue, you will read about the travels of Rusty, the famous stray dog. I am
convinced that Rusty is alive today because of the residents and office workers of
Oak Brook who not only warmed him with kindness, but cared for Rusty for 3
years.
Likewise, a little lost dog was wandering in Hinsdale for 4 days in the snow, when
an 11 year old boy put on his boots and grabbed a flashlight at 9:30 pm in order to
save a life.
So as you tolerate yet another winter, don’t just think warm thoughts. Spread a
kind word or perform an act of kindness for someone in need. You may just warm
your own heart in the process.
FROM OUR MAILBAG
We adopted Elias in Feb. and we just
love him. I never knew a dog could be
so happy to see me when I get home,
even if I am gone for five minutes. He
is such a funny dog and the whole family
loves him. My husband always
says that he never thought that a dog
could love me more than he does but
Elias proved him wrong. We have had
four Huskies over the years and we
love the breed. Bonnie W.
Just wanted to let you know things are
going great with Jackson. It took him
about five minutes to explore each
room in the house and become comfortable.
He doesn’t need to be crated and
already has full run of the house.
Thank you, Jack L.
My son and I adopted Heidi, Min
Schnauzer, about a year ago. She goes
everywhere with us and we love her
tons! While I’m at work she stays and
plays with my sister’s dog, Holly.
They are great friends. Thanks for
finding her! Sincerely, Lori G.
