HINSDALE HUMANE SOCIETY / SUMMER 2011
Director’s Desk
“The way you get meaning into your life
is you devote yourself to loving others,
devote yourself to your community
around you, and devote yourself to creating
something that gives you purpose and
meaning.” -Mitch Albom
I love a good parade! This summer, the
Hinsdale Humane Society walked in the
Hinsdale 4 th of July parade and the Pet
Parade in LaGrange. The dogs (and 1
cat!) really “strut their stuff.” The animals
seem to enjoy the energy of the
crowd. I do, too!
Lori Halligan, HHS Executive Director
waves proudly in the 4th of July Parade
I find it impossible to walk in either
parade without unexpected tears springing
to my eyes. Why? Because parade-goers
show their appreciation back to us. They
clap and wave. They shout out words of
thanks and gratitude.
One young woman picked up her dog and
started moving his paw so he could wave
at us. “This is Max,” she shouted. “We
adopted him in 2002. Best dog ever!”
“Great!” I tried to shout back as the lump
built up in my throat and tears started to
spill over.
It is such a privilege to be part of the
community. A place where people devote
themselves to one another.
We Save Lives!
On a daily basis we receive multiple email requests from overcrowded animal
welfare organizations around the country pleading with us to help with their
overpopulation crisis by accepting surplus animals. Some requests are just written
descriptions of the current animals in need, while others are sent with pictures
of dozens of animals of all breeds and descriptions with pleading eyes almost
begging to be selected.
Tragically, many of these animals are euthanized in “kill” shelters, especially in
impoverished areas, simply because of the never-ending daily influx of homeless
animals and the lack of space to house them all.
It is those animals that the Hinsdale Humane Society is now also striving to rescue
when kennel space allows so that wonderful animals don’t have to die simply
because there is nowhere for them to go.
Since our partnership with both local and out of state animal welfare organizations,
the Hinsdale Humane Society is very proud to have been responsible for
the transfer of well over 1000 animals to our facility, many of which would have
been euthanized without our intervention.
A number of the dogs we transferred were rescued from puppy mill auctions.
Puppy mills are mass factory-based breeding operations where dogs live in
cramped and filthy wire cages their whole lives, rarely receiving medical care,
treated solely as inanimate objects and a source of income. cont. on page 3
overcrowded shelter in Tennessee in March, 2011
HHS: We Save Lives!... continued from page 1
When their usefulness for breeding has ended, they are discarded and those that
are not destroyed are sold at auction, many times to other puppy mill breeders and
the abuse continues. With the help of our volunteers to socialize the dogs and
accustom them to human touch and the extra
TLC provided by our staff, the rescued puppy
mill dogs thrived and were adopted into
homes where they now live as pampered pets.
When an animal shelter in Alabama was
forced to close due to the sale of the property,
HHS answered their plea and selected two
large-breed seven year old dogs who sadly had
lived there since puppies. After living their
entire lives in an animal shelter, we are delighted
to report that Penny was adopted into a
loving home within only two days of her arrival,
and Shelly within a week.
Shelly
Fourteen puppies destined for euthanasia from
an overcrowded Tennessee animal shelter are
now living happily in their new homes as a
result of our cooperative efforts and transfer
program.
These are just a few of the hundreds of happy
endings the Hinsdale Humane Society is responsible
for creating as a result of our transfer
and adoption programs.
Our most recent transfer, Krissy, a seven year
old Labrador mix, who also lived her entire
life in the Alabama shelter, was selected to
transfer to HHS even though she has tested
positive for heartworm disease. While other
animal welfare organizations continued to pass
her by as a result of her illness, we believe she
deserves a chance to live happily ever after
and are going to do everything we can to give
her that chance.
Krissy
The Hinsdale Humane Society provides a
number of valuable pet-related services to the
communities it serves such as our humane
education and pet-therapy programs, stray
holding, behavior helpline, and dog obedience
classes, to name a few. It is our adoption program,
however, that is and continues to be the
crux of our operations resulting in the rehoming
of well over 100,000 animals since
our founding in 1953.
Penny
Thank you very much for your past and continued
support. With your help we will be
able to continue to save the Shellys and the
Pennys and the Krissys of the world.
Because saving animals is what we do best.
bags for both dogs and cats. Each
bag was filled with pet treats, toys,
Talk about a birthday celebration!
Three friends from Hinsdale Central
High School had a combined celebration
for their 16 th birthdays. They
planned a jungle themed party and
invited lots of other friends. Eliza
Gross, Bridget Gilmore and Cara
Tenerelli decided to ask for donations
to help the animals of the Hinsdale
Humane Society.
So imagine our surprise when we
opened an envelope to discover
$1,084 in cash to benefit the cats and
dogs of HHS!
The girls didn’t make this donation to
receive any recognition, but they certainly
deserve our gratitude!
Pet Walk 2011– A Record Breaking Year!
With the state of the economy in the past two years, we have felt the impact
like many people, families and businesses. This gives us more reason to be
thankful and to celebrate the great news - our 22nd Annual Pet Walk fundraiser
reached record numbers! We raised approximately $55,000, increasing
our revenue across the board in attendance, raffle ticket sales, pledges,
sponsors, and walkers.
We couldn’t do it with out the help from our passionate, hard working volunteers,
our dedicated staff, our generous sponsors, and our animal related
partners. It was a wonderful day for all who attended and fun to be surrounded
by animal advocates and animal lovers!
Eunice Wickstrom
Eunice "Wicky" Wickstrom, passed
away January 24, 2011 at 95 years
young.
Leslie Moneka with her great aunt “Wicky”
share a meal and a smile in this photo from
1993. Wicky is wearing her Pet Walk
t-shirt!
Wicky was a dedicated supporter of the
Hinsdale Humane Society for over 20
years, along with her close friend Caroline
Blankshain. She was a top fundraiser
for the HHS Pet Walk, participating
in the event until she was 92. Wicky
did not let physical limitations stop her
efforts and continued to gather donations
when walking was no longer a
possibility.
At Pet Walk this year, her great niece
Leslie Moneka raised over $1500 for
the Hinsdale Humane Society by
“Walking in Wicky’s Shoes.” Leslie
was inspired by Wicky’s dedication to
all animals and actually wore her aunt’s
favorite sneakers. Leslie said, “She and
I would often joke that she had the snazziest
kicks in her retirement home. She
loved them and they exemplified her
unyielding youthful spirit.”
Eunice Wickstrom was truly a pioneering
woman! She served as an army
nurse in WWII, and was one of the first
nurses in the Chicago Public Schools.
She traveled all around the world and
was especially concerned about the
plight of animals who were threatened,
endangered or facing loss of habitat.
HHS is pleased to have formed a fond
friendship with the families and friends
of Eunice Wickstrom over the years.
We extend our sincere sympathy for
your loss. Yet we celebrate the passion
and dedication she felt for the homeless
animals of Hinsdale Humane Society.
Jordan Crist Memorial Extern: Kim Klazura
Kim Klazura was selected as the Jordan Crist Memorial Extern for 2011. This opportunity
is open to students currently enrolled in a graduate program at a veterinary
medical school. Kim received her Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of
Illinois where she is currently a 2nd year graduate student pursuing a degree in veterinary
medicine.
The extern spends four days a week at West Suburban Veterinary Associates in
Westmont, and one day a week at the Hinsdale Humane Society.
“The knowledge that I have gained this summer at West Suburban Veterinary
Associates and the Hinsdale Humane Society has definitely helped prepare me for
my future career in veterinary medicine,” shared Kim. “This externship has been a
wonderful experience! I have learned so much about the work that goes into operating
a successful humane society, and I have been able to observe the importance of
veterinary care and disease prevention in a shelter environment. The field of veterinary
medicine is my passion, and I know that I will enjoy going to work every
single day.”
Hinsdale Humane Society Blessing of the Pets, Blessing of the Bricks
On Sunday, June 26 approximately 50 guests and 19 pets participated
in a very special event at the Hinsdale Humane Society. We blessed 53
new bricks added to the Carla E. Fisher Memorial Garden. We also
included a “blessing of the pets” ceremony, the first one held at HHS
since 2006.
Gathering music was provided by Maggie Bendis and Lydia Zoells,
French horn and Emma Anetsberger, flute. After Executive Director,
Lori Halligan welcomed guests, HHS volunteer & foster parent Kevin
Irving read a children’s story about the unending love provided by a
small puppy to his adoring family.
Rev. Susan Gerow, Grace Lutheran Church of La Grange, offered special
prayers and blessings. Guests were charmed by her gracious
warmth. She individually blessed 2 birds, 2 cats and 15 dogs. All the
pets received blessing medallions, treats and gifts. After the service,
Pastor Gerow said prayers with families as they held hands over their
personalized bricks.
Volunteer Claudia Moffat had this to say about the brick for her dad,
James “Red” Moffat, a lover of animals and of life. “My mom was an
HHS member when I was little, and she and Dad cleaned puppy cages
as part of her responsibilities. My sister and I would spend the time
playing with the puppies. I think Dad would appreciate having a place
in this garden. The dedication was lovely, and very moving for Mom
and me.”
All animal lovers know what a blessing pets can be to our lives, so it
was a delightful experience to bless our pets! Pastor Gerow also reminded
us of animals throughout the world who are neglected, endangered
or mistreated.
We hope to offer a “Blessing of the Pets” as an annual event. Maybe
we’ll see you sometime in 2012!

The Hinsdale Humane Society participated in the 6th
Annual Kmart/Pedigree Adoption event on Thursday,
June 9th, at the Kmart/Sears holdings headquarters
in Hoffman Estates, IL. At the event, employees,
their families and local shelters came together to
feature pets available for adoption.
Hinsdale Humane Society, Animal Welfare League,
and Save-A-Vet were invited to showcase animals
available for adoption and to distribute adoption literature.
The animals enjoyed the road trip, even
though a severe rain storm made the trip a bit more
challenging! Loading, unloading and driving in the
pouring rain did not dampen the spirits of the HHS
staff, volunteers or pets. Our shelter animals enjoyed
a day away from their shelter environment, with
plenty of extra love and attention from all. And, we
were excited to adopt out 10 shelter animals directly
resulting from the event.
Hinsdale Humane Society received a generous donation of $13,000 from Pedigree. For the sixth consecutive year, a percentage
of the sales of PEDIGREE Food for Dogs sold at Kmart stores nationwide were donated to local Chicagoland animal
shelters. A special thank you to Pedigree for supporting our animals in need and helping our homeless dogs find
loving forever homes.
Director’s Desk continued from page 1
Did you hear about the Civil War re-enactor who suffered a heart attack
during the Hinsdale parade? This community sprang into action… doctors
and nurses from Hinsdale Adventist Hospital, paramedics and police officers,
community members who happened to be in an area where a stranger needed
immediate assistance. Richard Raidy’s life was saved.
“It truly was a miracle – he could have been anywhere else and died,” said
Raidy’s daughter, Kristina. “Words honestly can’t describe how thankful we
all are, we’re all so lucky and appreciative for what everyone did for my
dad.” [Suburban Life, July 8, 2011]
This is an extraordinary example how individuals create a sense of community.
But I see simple (albeit less dramatic) acts of kindness every day.
Recent catastrophic storms have overwhelmed our community. Huge trees
blocking streets. Flooded storm drains. Broken fences. Power outages that
lasted for days.
But then I saw people walking down the street with chain saws clearing limbs
so cars and ambulances could go through… folks with rakes cleaning debris
from storm sewers… neighborhood kids picking up trash from elderly residents’
yards… and orange power cords running across the street because
some houses had power and some didn’t.
The Hinsdale Humane Society has been a part of the community for 58 years.
When you think about it, much has changed in that time. But something has
remained constant. People helping friends, neighbors and complete strangers
in their community. It gives purpose and meaning and a feeling of absolute
gratitude.
Obedience Instructor, Jennifer Vlazny, answers pet
Q. What are the requirements for a pet to become part of the HHS pet
therapy program? Lynn, Westmont
A. The Hinsdale Humane Society currently offers three Pet Therapy Programs.
Our Pet-a-Pet program consists of volunteers and their own approved
pets visiting with residents of area nursing homes and retirement communities.
The goal of the program is to reduce loneliness and boredom for the residents,
while encouraging reminiscence and recall.
In our R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs) program, volunteers
and their own Delta-certified dogs visit schools and libraries where children
read to them. Children who may be intimidated learning to read in front of
people are able to relax and progress their skills by reading to an animal.
Teams of trained owners and their Delta-certified dogs visit the Adventist
Paulson Pediatric Rehabilitation Center to help children with physical rehabilitation
in our C.A.R.e (Canine Assisted Rehabilitation) therapy program.
All three programs are exceptionally rewarding not only for the recipients of
the visits, but for the volunteer teams, as well. The programs currently consist
of fifty one dogs and three cats, though rabbits and birds are welcome in the
Pet-a-Pet program, as well.
Naturally, it takes an exceptional pet to qualify, so even though the family pet
may be well-behaved and friendly, it also must meet the following criteria:
• Obedient, socially friendly, and calm temperament
• Tolerant of being touched, sometimes roughly, with no retaliation
• Socialized with people of all ages
• Able to handle unusual events, sights, and sounds
• Current on all vaccinations with written proof from your veterinarian
• Able to walk calmly on a tight leash without jumping on people if a
large pet, or be carried around calmly in a basket if a small pet
(Pet-a-Pet)
• Is comfortable in a sit, stay for an extended period of time (R.E.A.D.)
• Pass a shelter-performed behavioral test (Pet-a-Pet)
• Delta certification (R.E.A.D. and C.A.R.e)
Reggie “Rags”
I adopted Reggie (Rags) from HHS on
Mother's Day weekend 6 yrs ago. He
is a dear sweet dog and quite a character!
He loves long walks and sitting
on the front porch with me watching
the world go by. I can't believe that
he is already going to be 7 since it
seems like only yesterday that I saw
his big brown eyes and it was love at
first sight. He brings a smile to my
face every day! D. Sauers
FROM OUR MAILBAG
Greetings! I just wanted to let you
know that Foxy has been renamed.
She is now Jadzia Dax Wallace
Hoffelt, we call her Dax, and she
is adjusting nicely to our home. Her
only issues have been puppy biting
when she gets excited playing in the
yard and house training. We start dog
school next week, so hopefully we
will be able to address these issues
with a firm plan. Thank you so much
for bringing her to our lives. She is
such a good girl.
Sincerely, Janice W.
I just wanted to send a note thanking
HHS for taking care and doing such a
wonderful job with Lilo. I adopted her
with the help of Alan, HHS Adoption
Counselor. Alan was fantastic. He
was so helpful and kind. Lilo is doing
well in her new home and is slowly
getting introduced to her new roommate
(Tiggy, male tabby).
Thank you again. Sarra M.
but nobody responded to it. He is the
cuddliest dog I have ever met. He
enjoys tummy rubs and lots of attention.
