“Be kind whenever possible. It is always
possible.”
~The Dalai Lama
I have this tendency to see the glass half
full. I choose to see the good in people. I
cannot tolerate bullying or condescension
or hypocrisy. If I’m not sure how to proceed
in any given situation, I will ask
myself, “Is it the kind thing to do”
While I may think that always erring on
the side of kindness is a good thing, others
may not. Some may see a kind person
as vulnerable and weaker than another, or
heaven forbid, an easy target. Yes, a kind
person may be scammed by a beggar or a
homeless person, but they also may have
just provided a meal to someone who
would otherwise go hungry.
Mia & Matthew Cozzi with their card:
“Thank you for helping the animals.”
At the Hinsdale Humane Society, I am
always amazed at the kindness shown to
the animals by young people in our community.
Children bring us plastic bags full
of coins from lemonade stands. A girl
scout troop came with 3 SUV’s FULL of
food, paper towels, kitty litter, etc. Local
school clubs have held bake sales, collection
canisters and donation drives.
A Peek Behind the Scenes
It is certainly no easy process to prepare an animal for adoption and to get the
shelter ready in time for opening to the public. It is a feat that could not be
accomplished without the dedicated staff and volunteers who work together
behind the scenes.
Operations Manager Jennifer Vlazny remarks,
“Working at the shelter is far from a 9 to 5 job as
the staff does not go home at night until they are
sure every cage or kennel is clean, every animal
has been fed, watered, and bedded down comfortably
for the night, and everything has been
cleaned, restocked, and is where it should be.
Then they’re back again in the morning to do it
all over again.”
We frequently hear comments from visitors remarking
how clean our shelter is compared to
others they have visited and how well cared for
our animals are. This is a point of pride for all of
us at the Hinsdale Humane Society!
As part of the adoption evaluation process, each
dog and cat undergoes a medical examination
and a behavioral assessment. Vaccinations are
administered, ears are cleaned, nails are clipped,
animals are de-wormed, flea medication is
administered, and microchips are implanted.
Cats are also tested for feline leukemia and
feline immunodeficiency virus, and dogs are
tested for heartworm disease. Time consuming
tasks to the say the least with approximately 10-
12 hours staff time spent on each animal, but all
vital to providing our animals with the best care
possible. Veterinarians from Willowgrove Pet
Clinic and Elmhurst Animal Care Center donate
their time twice weekly to examine animals and
make recommendations for their health care.
Animals in need of extensive grooming are provided
makeovers donated by Shear Perfection in
Willowbrook or Velvet Touch in Hinsdale.
Katie Wolfe cuddles with
one of our “No Fee Felines”
after hours.
Robyn Garrison cleaning dog
kennels before opening.
Behavioral and temperament evaluations are as significant as health evaluations.
In order to classify the demeanor of an animal, each cat or dog is assessed
while activities, actions, and personality are all noted.
Behind the Scenes… continued from page 1
The staff uses the information to place the adoptable animal in the best possible
forever home with a family that closely matches each animal’s needs.
Our newly revised website serves as a valuable resource for potential adopters to
discover additional information about the animals available for adoption. Photos,
a video of the animal with a volunteer, and health facts are submitted for posting
to the website. The information provides a brief background that is expanded upon
once a family decides to enter the adoption process.
In addition to maintaining the cleanliness of the shelter during business hours,
performing animal assessments, and helping the public, the staff physically races
the clock each morning preparing the shelter for opening by cleaning cages,
scooping litter boxes, feeding cats and dogs their specialized diets, medicating
sick animals, scooping dog poop, and hosing down kennels. Volunteers assist by
washing the multitude of dirty laundry and dishes that are generated each day and
helping with general housework duties such as washing windows, vacuuming and
mopping floors, cleaning the bathrooms and sanitizing doorknobs and keyboards.
To help assure the emotional well-being of our animals, each dog and cat spends
time out of its cage or kennel. Volunteers interact with cats in rooms offering toys
and catnip, along with gentle brushing and soothing strokes. Dogs are taken outdoors
for walks in a wooded area or around the neighborhood, and receive off
leash play time in our fenced-in kennel area.
Vlazny states, “Cleaning cages, scooping litter boxes, washing load after load of
dishes and laundry, feeding cats and dogs, scooping dog poop, mopping kennels,
and a myriad of mundane, yet vital, daily shelter duties enable the Hinsdale Humane
Society to function as the highly-reputable, efficient, clean, and well-run
organization it is.” We could not accomplish everything we do for the animals
without our dedicated staff and volunteers working behind the scenes!
Two Paws Up!
Check out the 3rd Annual
9Lives® Morris the Cat 2013 Calendar.
The 12 month calendar features
Morris along with photos of a select
group of his four-legged feline Facebook
fans! The proceeds of the calendar
benefit The Hinsdale Humane
Society, which was his original
home! Special thanks to all of our
friends at 9 Lives for producing the
calendar and for choosing HHS as
the beneficiary. Calendars may be
purchased through February 15,
2013 at http://www.lulu.com. You
Director’s Desk continued from page 1
Children also bring us thank you cards and notes, and even home baked goodies
for the staff. “Thanks for helping our lost dog. We thought he might be gone forever!”
Just try accepting a plate of cupcakes and a heart-felt note like that without
fighting back a few tears.
I am convinced those children who learn compassion at an early age will carry
that capacity for caring throughout their lifetimes. I hope all these children (and
their parents) see that their acts of kindness not only affect the individual on the
receiving side, but their compassion ripples throughout the community, and reflects
back on the child.
You can’t read the news without coming across stories of unspeakable acts of
violence against humans and animals. You might have to look a little harder, but
there are often stories of wonderful acts of love and compassion, too. After the
shooting tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a movement has started to
commit 26 Acts of Kindness in memory of the students and their teachers. It
might be something as simple as bringing a flower to an elderly neighbor.
But if children and adults could commit to performing acts of kindness, just think
how that might affect the community and our nation!
The dogs and the cats who wait at the Hinsdale Humane Society for their forever
homes can’t take care of themselves. They need you for their next meal, walk or
vaccination. So here’s another thought they can take to heart:
“I have always depended upon the kindness of strangers.” Tennessee Williams.
Special thanks to Eagle Scout candidate
Matt Saunders who refurbished
our outdoor kennel area to
provide a larger play area for dogs
sheltered at the Hinsdale Humane
Society. This was definitely a
“hands–on” project. Matt and his
fellow scouts from Troop 52 in
Hinsdale worked hard to transport 2
tons of pea gravel by wheelbarrow!
Matt is still collecting donations to
cover the $3,000 expense for the
chain link fence and other materials.
After 5 ½ years of dedicated service
to HHS, we say goodbye to
Pam Salomone, public relations
accepted a position as Communications
and Marketing Manager at
Goodbye to Pam Salomone
New Board Members Join the
Hinsdale Humane Society
We graciously welcome two new members
to the Board of Directors. Our
board is comprised of a group of community
members who provide leadership
and strategic oversight to our organization
during a three year term.
Sharon Foley, Ph.D., recently retired
after 30 years of service at Hines VA
Hospital as a Registered Dietitian. She
currently teaches in the College of
Health Sciences at Rush University.
Sharon lives in Oak Park with her husband
and dogs Isabel and Brenna. In
describing her excitement to be a part of
the HHS board, Foley states “I truly love
all animals and am concerned about
their welfare. I am interested in contributing
in any way possible to the health
and well being of all animals, especially
those who are unwanted or abandoned.”
Elliot Tarabour is a technology specialist
who designs voice and data networks
for corporate clients. He previously
served on the Board of Education for
District 181. Elliot and his wife live in
Clarendon Hills and are the proud parents
of 3 adult children and a beagle,
Tiger, adopted from HHS.
We are very excited to have their assistance
in helping the animals and giving
back to our community!
the St. Charles Public Library. Pam has
certainly "left her mark" on the organization
through her leadership, creativity
and organizational skills.
Pam's most significant accomplishments
have included successfully launching
our new website, maximizing our public
relations outreach and increasing fundraising
of Pet Walk more than 40%. We
are going to miss her work ethic and her
sense of humor.
As one of our volunteers so eloquently
Matching Gifts for Hinsdale Humane Society
Imagine the impact you and the company you work for can make in helping our
furry friends! Many people do not realize their corporations participate in a
matching gift program. In addition to the donation from an employee, the donation
amount may be doubled or tripled by the corporation! For instance, if an
individual donates $100, their corporation may donate an additional $100 to
$300. Any amount is greatly appreciated and goes directly to helping the Hinsdale
Humane Society care for homeless animals as they await adoption. Think
about the immense change your heartfelt donation will make by simply checking
into a matching gift program.
The few steps that you can take will change an animal’s life. First, check with
your employer to see if they match gifts. Next, fill out your company’s paperwork
and submit the paperwork to the shelter along with your donation. It is
simple and easy. We will do the rest of the work for you!
We would like to recognize these companies for matching gifts in 2012:
McDonald’s Corporation, Marmon Group, All State Insurance, Leo Burnett,
McMaster Carr, Corn Products, Northrop Grumman, Microsoft, Follett, JP Morgan
Chase, CNA Foundation, Bank of America, Chicago Tribune Foundation,
Aon Foundation, Motorola Foundation, International Tool Works (ITW),
McGraw-Hill, Kraft Foods Foundation, ISO (Insurance Services Office, Odyssey
Re, Nicor, DirecTV, Grainger, Johnson & Johnson, PepsiCo, Mead Johnson,
Tellabs, Sara Lee Foundation and The Home Depot.
We offer our sincere gratitude to all those who have donated to our organization
and to the corporations that match gifts. It is a wonderful way for you to give
back to your community by helping the animals that need YOU! Your generosity
allows all of us a chance to make a difference in the lives of dogs and cats
looking for their forever homes. Thank you!
Ask The Trainer
HHS Humane Educator, Kym Iffert answers pet
related questions and offers practical advice.
Q. My dog loves to sit in the kitchen while I’m cooking but he quickly picks up
any food that gets dropped. I know there are certain things that are bad for him.
Is there a way to teach him not to pick up scraps
A. Dogs don’t come with an understanding of what they can and can’t have;
especially in the kitchen or around food. One of my favorite commands, “Leave
it” teaches our pets the concept of “don’t even think about it.”
· Using both hands, place one treat in “Hand 1” and 2-3 small treats in
“Hand 2”.
· Place Hand 1 (with one treat) near the dog’s nose and Hand 2 (with
several treats) behind your back.
· When the dog puts his nose or mouth on your hand, say “Leave It” in
a firm voice. Wait a moment.
· As soon as your dog turns away or pulls his head back, praise and
treat from Hand 2.
· Repeat “Leave It” once if necessary. If he does not pull away after 2
commands, lure him away from the treat with Hand 2 – and treat and
praise from Hand 2 when he turns away.
Repeat the exercise, luring with your second hand if necessary. When he pulls
away from the treat on the first command, praise the dog and open Hand 1 to
deliver the treat while you say “Take It”. As you progress, you should expect
your dog to stay off while you show the treat. If he moves toward Hand 1, treat,
close your hand and repeat “Leave It”.
Once your dog understands, expand the margins. Place a treat on the floor in
front of your dog, ready to cover it quickly with Hand 1 when the dog moves
toward it and repeat as you did before, remembering to always pick up the treat
from the floor before allowing your dog to “take it” using the command.
Remember: Don’t use this until the dog has mastered it in training sessions – it
won’t be effective and will confuse the dog. Be sure to use the “Take It” when
you give the treat, you don’t want him to think the praise word means he can
scoop up the item from the floor.
This command is useful for keeping dogs safe in a variety of settings. It can be
used to keep them from picking up dropped food or medications; it can control
the impulse to approach another dog, and can help give you some peace of mind
by expanding the command to shoes, squirrels or other dog-enticing objects.
FROM OUR MAILBAG
Sophie
We love our little girl – Thank you!
The Evans family
I adopted Rosie, that black and white
sweetie pie, and she is the BEST! She
is quite the curious kitty. She is just
like her adoptive mother; we both love
windows, food, and sleep. Of course
we both like to talk, and she is quite
the chatty Cathy! It’s adorable!
Adopting Rosie is the best thing I
have ever done. I cannot believe she
was given up, she brings me such happiness.
Hinsdale Public Library
We lost our Golden Retriever in April
of 2012. Not long after, my husband
went online and came across Rusty, a
beautiful Border Collie mix. During
our drive there we wondered if it was
too soon to let another dog into our
hearts. When we saw him it was love at
first sight. All of our doubts vanished
when we looked into his grateful eyes.
The time is always right to give a shelter
pet a loving home. Rusty has been
with us about 15 months now and we
love him dearly. Our holiday wishes go
out to the wonderful, caring staff and
the animal friends that are currently
living in the Hinsdale Humane Society
shelter. Diane, Steve and Matt J.
On July 17, 2012, our dog Billy passed
away. His last days were difficult, and
we couldn’t see him suffer any longer.
We rescued him on February 12, 1994.
When he first saw us, he gave us a sad
bark – “Please take me” home. So, we
did. My husband and I, and our grandchildren
loved him until his last breath.
We miss him so much. He was 19 years
old!!
God Bless and
many thanks,
