“Anyone who doesn’t know what soap
tastes like, never washed a dog.”
Franklin P. Jones, American humorist
Our staff members know what soap tastes
like. They know the joy of kitten purrs,
but they also recognize the subtle signals
of an unhappy cat. They’ve experienced
bruised shins from over exuberant tail
wags, and had their hair rearranged by
feline stylists. They’ve force fed sick kittens
because sustenance is the difference
between life and death. They’ve stood on
8 foot ladders with catch poles to try to
rescue wayward rooftop cats.
They arrive in the morning to the chorus
of 50 hungry cats demanding breakfast
and 25 dogs who want to go out NOW!
When they go home at the end of the day,
they carry the lingering odor of disinfectant,
as well as bleach stains on their favorite
pair of jeans.
Visitors to the shelter will notice the animals
are clean, well fed, healthy and
happy – and so are the humans! I’m often
amazed at the dedication our staff members
show to the Hinsdale Humane Society.
Most of our staff members have college
degrees. Believe me, they could all
be making a higher salary somewhere
other than a not-for-profit agency! So
why do they work here (including nights
and weekends)!
Because they love animals! They have the
privilege of helping cats, dogs, veterinarians,
police officers, the public and each
other. They hold precious life within their
hands and feel unconditional love. They
experience the thrill of having adopting
families and their pets visit the shelter
with stories of extraordinary moments of
profound joy.
History of HHS - Humane Education
A Compassionate Message for All Ages
In July of 1953, Mrs. John Lessel became President of the newly formed Hinsdale
Humane Society. The first stated purpose of the Society was to “educate
the public in the proper handling and training of animals, dogs in particular.” It
was the Society’s hope that “a program of visual education along the lines of
child education in animal care and understanding can be included in current
school programs…fitting into the health and safety category of curriculum.”
The focus of our founding mothers was in responsible pet ownership; keeping
dogs on leashes, picking up after one’s dog, and spaying and neutering pets.
Our early humane educators were volunteers with their own homemade felt
boards and posters who made visits to area classrooms.
In 1981, the Society completed the Educational Resource Room, complete with
resident birds, bunnies, hamsters, gerbils, fish and even a chinchilla. Educational
books, pamphlets and posters were used to spread the message of the interconnectedness
of animals and human kind.
In 1991, through a bequest
from the estate of Lena Ford,
a member of HHS during its
formative years, HHS announced
the addition of
Carole Huebotter, its first
education director. Carole,
an educator with 23 years
experience, took Humane
Education to new heights,
packaging structured humane
educational programs for
schools, purchasing videos
and books, and giving the
HHS a “foot in the door” to
local schools.
Lace School PAWS Club, Darien, enjoy a tour
of HHS (Pets & Wildlife for Students)
Today, the Humane Education Program has expanded to include a Junior Humane
Society, three weeks of summer camp, tours of the facility, READ to the
dogs programs at five local libraries, Girl Scout and Brownie Pet Care badge
work, adult forums, as well as the traditional school-based humane educational
programs. In 2009, 126 groups scheduled tours of HHS or had a humane education
program at their school. In addition, we offer obedience classes, a behavior
“help line” to answer questions regarding issues pet parents are having with
their furry children, and we help the community with their questions regarding
wildlife problems. We continue to emphasize responsible pet ownership and
the importance of spaying and neutering our companion animals.
GOOD NEWS!
Holiday Highlights
In a year with much economic uncertainty,
we are pleased to share that
many of our Holiday Fundraisers
surpassed our goals. In fact, we ran
out of holiday cards and cookbooks.
And, we sold a record number of
holiday animal sponsorships - up 65%
from last year! Thanks to all who
support our holiday fundraising. It
helps us to continue to care for our
homeless pets year round.
HHS Fundraising Cookbook
Box Office Smash!
The HHS fundraising cookbook, Bone
Appétit, Recipes for Pets & People was
one of the biggest hits of 2009. The
cookbook features recipes from staff,
volunteers, friends, area vet offices,
hospitals, and animal related partners.
The recipes are
wonderful.
However, the
animal stories
steal the show!
The cookbook
features adoption
stories
from HHS
alumni. The
animals share
how they came
to the shelter and how they found their
loving forever homes. The cookbooks
sold like hotcakes! It was a wonderful
problem to run out and reorder. The
good news is we do have cookbooks
available and in stock at the shelter.
The cookbooks are $15 each or $12
each for 5 or more. For more call 630-
Directors Desk....continued from page 1
Whenever I tell people I’m with the Hinsdale Humane Society, they often say
“Oh, it must be so sad to work there.” While there are sad moments, each day is
filled with the satisfaction of knowing the animals are safe and healthy until they
find their forever homes.
Two Paws Up!
...To the Razny Jewelers, Hinsdale
who hosted a Shop n Share event in
December. Razny’s generously donated
10% of sales generated to
HHS. They also displayed and sold
copies of our popular fundraising
cookbook. Thank you for your
friendship and support!
So to all our staff members, I thank you for your time, effort and energy. It is an
honor to stand beside you in service to the cats and dogs.
And to our volunteers, board members, adopters and supporters: thank you for all
you do to make Hinsdale Humane Society such a great place to be! You know the
old saying “If you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life.” Now
let’s all go out and taste more soap.
HHS received a $5,090 grant from
The Grace Bersted Foundation. The
grant will allow us to grow our pet
therapy programs in DuPage
County, which has been a long term
goal of the shelter. Currently, our
Pet a Pet volunteers visit 21 area
nursing homes and the READ teams
visit 5 area libraries.
So Long, But Not Goodbye
The Hinsdale Humane Society would like to publicly thank Jill Schuch for her
dedication to our homeless animals for the past ten years. Jill began as a volunteer
dog walker and then moved into the role of
Volunteer Coordinator. Many of you will remember
Fred, her German Shepherd and HHS
alumnus who died in 2007, as they both entertained
the crowd during volunteer orientations.
Over the years, Jill has been our computer expert,
webmaster, donor database manager, and
Jill Schuch
interim executive director. She recently resigned
from HHS to relocate to Scottsdale, Arizona. Jill
is the proud pet parent of Percy and Annie
(READ and Pet a Pet participants) and Belle, all
rescued Papillons. Annie is also an HHS alumnus.
Outside of HHS, Jill has been an active
Jill Schuch
participant in rally and obedience training and as
a volunteer for both Papillon and German Shepherd breed rescue groups.
We thank Jill for her years of service to HHS and we know the shelter has benefitted
from her compassion for animals. Jill, we wish you all the best!
Kristi Wambaja, Hinsdale Animal Hospital’s Office
Manager, picking up animals from HHS in their
snappy new transport vehicle.
A special thanks to the Hinsdale
Animal Hospital, Hinsdale for picking
up and transporting HHS animals
for spay and neutering. It’s
such a help to the shelter to have
this service available. And, the animals
are now riding in style in the
new Hinsdale Animal Hospital van!
History of Humane Education
continued from page 1
Our hope is that one day there will no
longer be any need for humane education.
We hope that all pets will be
wanted and well cared for. We hope
that puppy mills and dog fighting will
simply be an unhappy memory one
day. We hope that individuals research
and understand the needs and behaviors
of any pet they choose to incorporate
into their family. We look forward to
that day.
What to do if you find a lost pet
By Jennifer Vlazny, HHS Operations Manager
My German Shepherd, Hannah, escaped from our yard on November 28 th and
minutes later a neighbor witnessed a car stop in front of our house and a young
couple put her into their vehicle and drive away. Though Hannah was wearing
a collar with multiple tags and is micro-chipped, she has yet to be returned.
For those of you that may not know what to do should
you find an animal running loose without an owner present,
first and foremost, do not take it out of the area in
which it was found. If you are unable to capture the animal,
call the local police department and report a description
of the animal and where it was last seen.
If you are able to contain the animal and it is wearing
identification tags, call the telephone numbers provided
on the tags to obtain owner information and call the
owner right away. If there is no visible identification, call
the local police department and ask if they have a lost Hannah
report matching the description of the animal.
If not, provide them with the animal’s description, the location where it was
found, and your contact information. If you are unable to care for the animal
until the owner is found, ask the police the procedure for animals found in their
village and follow that procedure. Doing so gives the owner every possible
chance of finding their pet in a timely manner.
If you choose to temporarily care for the animal while searching for its owner,
file a report with the police department in the town where the animal was found
as well as the surrounding villages. Take the animal to an animal shelter or
veterinarian and ask if they will scan it for the presence of a microchip. An appointment
is not required and they will do so for no charge. If the animal is
found to have a microchip, they can instruct you how to obtain owner information.
If a microchip is not present, report the above specifics to local humane
societies and animal control organizations. Place a free Found ad in local newspapers.
Create flyers and place them in retail stores, grooming shops, veterinarian
offices, pet stores, and humane societies. Post a description on one of the
many Lost & Found internet services as well as Craig’s List in both their Pets
and Lost and Found sections. The HHS website has links to a number of Lost
and Found services.
Whatever you do, please do not assume an owner is not looking for their pet,
even if the animal is not wearing identification. I know firsthand the devastating
feeling of losing a beloved four-legged companion and not knowing where
it is and if it is safe and well-cared for. I continue to pray that the persons who
took our dog will do the right thing and return her to us. I know Hannah, too,
wants to be home where she belongs with the family that loves her.
If anyone has information regarding Hannah, please call 630-323-5630 x14. There is a
large reward for her safe return.
Ask Jenny…HHS Operations Manager &
Obedience Instructor, Jennifer Vlazny, answers pet
related questions and offers practical advice.
I’m diverting from the usual Question/Answer format of this column to address
a topic that has dramatically affected my life personally. By doing so, I
hope to help spare other pet owners from experiencing the anguish I am currently
living through as a result of the recent loss of my German Shepherd. I
have always thought of myself as a responsible pet owner, but Hannah’s escape
from our fenced yard and ultimate disappearance have made me realize
that even if you are a conscientious pet owner and think you’re doing everything
right regarding the welfare of your four-legged family members, accidents
can still happen. The following preventative measures can help safeguard
your pet from becoming lost, as well as to increase your chances of
finding it in a timely manner should the unthinkable happen.
Micro-chip your pet and keep your contact information with the implant company
current. Ask your veterinarian to scan your pet during annual visits to
make certain the chip has not migrated and can be readily detected with a
scanner. If it has migrated far from the implant site, it is highly recommended
that the animal be re-chipped.
Your pet should wear a collar with tags, including an owner identification tag
displaying your current telephone number and address, at all times. Inspect
the tags periodically to make sure the information is still legible and has not
worn or faded. Know exactly what tags your pet is wearing.
Have current pictures of your pet that are clear and close-up with minimal
background distractions that can be downloaded from your computer to make
Lost flyers and email to friends, relatives, and Lost and Found internet sites
should the animal become lost.
Keep telephone numbers of your local police department, humane societies,
and animal control organizations readily accessible in the event you need to
call them. The quicker your pet is reported missing, the better your chances
of being reunited.
And last, but certainly not least, never allow your pet off leash in an unfenced
area or unattended in your yard, even for a few minutes. A few safety precautions
now could very well save you the sorrow and heartbreak of losing a
beloved four-legged family member later.
Humane Society “Making A Difference”
On Saturday, October 24 th , 2009 HHS volunteers were out in full force! Teams of
volunteers set out to visit area nursing homes all on the same day, National Make
a Difference Day. We had approximately 20 animal therapy teams with pets and
over 80 volunteers reaching out to hundreds of area residents. Each facility had
both an animal therapy team and a second team of cheerful volunteers to say
hello, visit, and share time with local residents.
Residents especially enjoyed the carnations and handmade drawings. Phillips
Flowers, generously donated 1000 carnations and hundreds of area school children,
scouting troops, and groups created over 500 special Make A Difference
Day drawings.
It was a wonderful day for all involved. “It was very rewarding to know that we
made a difference in the lives of our area seniors,” shared Pam Salomone, HHS
PR Special Events Director. “We heard that during our visit, one resident smiled
for the first time that month.”
HHS “Bowling for the Animals” Fundraising Event!
FROM OUR MAILBAG
I am so fortunate to have sweet little
Lily in MY life!
Pat
We adopted “Nugget” now Wrigley,
from HHS in June 2009 and she has
been such a great addition to our family.
She has settled in nicely to our
home and keeps us walking and smiling
more that we did before. She
graduated from her training class and
training her has been easy. Thank you
for rescuing her so we could find her!
Lily
In December ‘08, we adopted “Fuzz”
the cat. She has brought so much joy
into our lives and we can’t imagine life
without her. We’ve always been “dog
people” but when we saw Fuzz and her
shiny silver/grey coat and bright green
eyes, we knew we had to have her. We
enjoy her company and how sweet and
cuddly she is. We are so grateful to
have her. Thank You!
Shawn and Jackie
Thank you to the wonderful HHS staff
for all your help with adopting Annie.
She is settling in very well. She loves
attention, is very curious and gets
along great with our other cat and dog.
What a gift she is to our family. I will
keep you updated on her progress.
Sincerely, Marg
We Want To Hear from You!
God Bless each of you for the wonderful
care and love you give daily to the
precious dogs and cats that are homeless.
You are “Special” and wonderful
people!
