HINSDALE HUMANE SOCIETY / SUMMER 2012
Director’s Desk
“This new day is too dear, with its hopes
and invitations, to waste a moment on the
yesterdays.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson
Some people shy away from animal shelters.
They assume the available pets all
have “issues,” but I assure you that is far
from the truth. In fact, I am constantly
amazed at how easily the dogs and cats
adapt to their new homes. They don’t
waste a moment on the yesterdays. They
reinvent themselves with a new family.
I think we could all learn a thing or two
from our pets about living in the moment.
Do squirrels beckon you to a barking
party at the window? Are sunbeams inviting
you to a nap? Why worry when there
is kibble to nibble? Why worry at all?
Lori Halligan, HHS Director & Marley
I just got back from a road trip helping
my oldest son, a recent college graduate,
relocate halfway across the country. New
state. New job. New apartment. New
IKEA furniture. One of the first things he
wants to do is find his local animal shelter
and adopt a new best friend. Feline or
canine… it doesn’t really matter. As long
as it is furry and lovable. (And spayed or
neutered!)
Just this week at the shelter, a middle
aged man walked into the lobby and the
look on his face immediately told me
something was terribly wrong.
An Adventure in Animal Awareness
In general, kids love the cats and dogs they see at the shelter, but bugs… that is a
different story entirely! Each summer, Hinsdale Humane Society hosts three
weeks of what some might call “Pet Camp” but it really is much more than that.
From 9am-noon each day, kids between the ages of 9-12 learn about working
dogs, bugs, wildlife and what it takes to maintain happy, healthy animals, whatever
the species.
Humane Educator and camp
coordinator, Kym Iffert, looks
forward to the next week of
camp, August 6-10. “The best
part of the experience is that
the children learn about so
much more than cats and dogs.
They learn to empathize and to
have respect for all living
things…plants, animals and
each other,” Kym shares.
We spend our first day learning
about our campers and
counselors…each one introduces
themselves by answering
one thought provoking
question: If you could be any
animal, what would you be and
why? Some responses were
very informative for the counselors
“I’d be a Cheetah because
I’m one fast cat!” (Eilise,
age 9). Other answers were
well thought out, “…an eagle
because I would love to be able
to see the world from the sky
and eagles are protected under
the law” (Jennifer, 11) . Regardless
of what the answer
was, each child offered an interesting
perspective to embark
on the week-long adventure.
Pond scum can be lots of fun!
Campers pose for a photo before entering
the Shedd Aquarium, Chicago
After introductions on our first day, we were visited by a police officer and his
K9 partner. Officer Gaddis from the Willow Brook Police department talked
about how he uses fun games and positive reinforcement when he trains his police
dog to use her nose to find items or “to catch the bad guys.” K9 officer Icha
(pronounced EYE–ka) did not disappoint when she found every package that had
been hidden around the room.
Adventure in Animal Awareness... continued from page 1
A sunny Tuesday at Mayslake (part of DuPage County Forest Preserve) found our
campers skimming pond scum and swooping nets through prairie grasses to see
how many different species of bugs, snails and aquatic life we could identify (41
different species so far, including one small Blue Gill fish!) The campers learned
how important pollinators are to our everyday lives (bugs are responsible for 33%
of the fruits and vegetables we eat).
Did you know that bugs and people are not always so different? Earwigs fiercely
protect their young. Spiders build traps to catch food. Ants practice cooperative
farming with aphids.
During our visit to Shedd Aquarium, the campers learned that the same techniques
used to train dogs are implemented with dolphins, whales and sea lions. Why
train a sea lion? “So we can learn more about them and help keep them healthy,”
answers Natalie, a 9 year old from Hinsdale. A camper favorite, the trip to Willow
Brook Wildlife Center taught them how our modern world affects wild animals
and how to respect wild life. At Brookfield Zoo, campers learned about
“animal enrichment” and how to re-use and recycle objects like old phone books
and plastic bottles into interactive toys and games for the animals.
Most importantly we learned that animals, just like humans, need to respect others
for what each species has to offer and that in order to be healthy, we need to be
happy.
To sign up for Adventures in Animal Awareness for August 6 – 10, call Hinsdale
Humane Society at 630-323-5630 or download a registration form from our website
www.hinsdalehumanesociety.org The cost is $160 per camper. Scholarships
are available for financial need.
Sam’s Medical Fund
Sam, a Bernese mountain dog mix, came to us from an overcrowded downstate
shelter. He was found as a stray, but was never claimed by his owner. Shortly
after his arrival to Hinsdale Humane Society, we noticed him favoring his left rear
leg. After a thorough examination by a veterinarian,
it was discovered that Sam had a probable
fracture as a puppy that did not heal properly.
This will require a very expensive and complicated
corrective osteotomy surgery to repair.
We are constantly amazed at the compassion
shown by so many of you… from the children
who have hosted lemonade stands to the family
who left a credit card slip and said they would
cover whatever funds we could not raise! And
the people who made donations, but didn’t want
to be acknowledged.
Sam
We are currently consulting with veterinary experts
to determine the best medical options for Sam, who in spite of constant pain,
remains a sweet, gentle dog.
As a result of the generosity of animal lovers in the community, volunteers, and
staff, so far we have collected $2,886. Special thanks to those who made donations
to help Sam: Laurie Berg, Sophie Biancalana, Matthew Billenstein, Tanida
Birkholz, Jim Conlin, Grace Dolci, Mr. & Mrs. Carlton Meyer, Faedra Charlton -
Perrin, Charlie and July Porta, Lauren & Morgan Ridgway, Marilyn Pavlik,
Franny Schiavitti, Ray Redding, Kathy Daly, Kevin & Lee Dages, Jan Miller,
John & Donna Donaldson, Sylvia Kuchenbecker, Caroline Johnston, Vicki
Jacobsen, Bev DePhillips, Bridget Conlan, Jack & Colin O’Brien.
Thank you so much!
Two Paws Up!
...to Cuts on Cass, Westmont who
ran a special hair cut promotion to
support HHS. During the month of
May, they collected a dollar from
every haircut and donated the proceeds
to Hinsdale Humane Society.
And, the grand total was $700! In
addition, Cuts on Cass sponsored
Pet Walk and donated a gift basket.
Cuts on Cass, Crystal Gambosi and Katie Horejs, Coowners
and Lori Halligan, HHS Executive Director
Nick Kesseric collects pet food & supplies
at Walgreens, Hinsdale
...to Nick Kesseric, Hinsdale Central
High School, who organized a food
and supply drive for his English class
assignment “Impact on the World.”
Nick raised $384.59 and collected
dozens of items from the HHS wish
list. Thank you for helping the animals
Hundreds of people and pets enjoyed the beautiful sunny day and the fun
animal-related activities at Pet Walk 2012. The Pet Mall was packed with
vendors showcasing the latest in pet products and services. Shoppers enjoyed
the event goody bags, entering to win vendor prize raffles and picking
up free product samples, treats, and goodies. And, the people and pets enjoyed
walking the new Pet Walk route through beautiful KLM Park.
Guests could choose from plenty of exciting entertainment and demonstrations
including the high flying frisbee dogs, carnival games for dogs, K-9
police dog demonstrations, pet contests on stage, petting zoo, pony rides and
more. Check out the fun photos from Pet Walk 2012 on our website
Hinsdale Humane Finalist
for Prestigious Award
The Hinsdale Humane Society is
very proud to announce we were
selected as a finalist for the Alford
Axelson Award for Nonprofit Managerial
Excellence, awarded by
Northpark University. This annual
award, established in 2001, recognizes
and celebrates Chicago area
nonprofit organizations that exemplify
extraordinary organizational
managerial excellence and demonstrate
a strong sense of integrity
throughout the organization’s culture.
Some of the hallmarks of this
award are solid financial management,
outstanding programs and
services, and board engagement.
We were nominated in the small
organization category, for nonprofits
with annual budgets of less than $3
million. “ We tend to think of ourselves
as a place to adopt a pet, but
we are so much more!” shared Lori
Halligan. “ Through the award application
we were able to highlight our
innovative programs, including pet
therapy, humane education and
community partnerships.”
Although the Hinsdale Humane Society
was not selected as the overall
winner, Diana Watkins of Northpark
University had this to say about our
organization:
“Congratulations to you and your
staff at the Hinsdale Humane Society.
The Alford Axelson Award is
quite a difficult process that truly
requires strong managerial leadership
to even qualify as a finalist, so
this speaks volumes to your organization!”
Executive Director Lori Halligan,
Board President Judy Porta and
Board Secretary Anne DeSimone
attended the awards symposium in
June. It is wonderful to be recognized
for managerial excellence!
However, leadership of the Hinsdale
Humane Society is an ongoing work
in progress. Tools are in place to see
continued growth and vitality as an
organization, meeting relevant needs
of a pet-loving public!
Hinsdale Humane Society - Interns & Externs:
Summer is a busy season for the Hinsdale Humane Society, for animals and students! For the past few months, the staff
has worked closely with three outstanding young adults who were selected for our internship and externship programs.
The Jordan Crist Memorial Externship for veterinary students was named in memory of Jordan Crist—an
exceptional young man who truly cared for the well being of animals. Two outstanding students work side-by-side with
the doctors and technicians at West Suburban Veterinary Associates in their state-of-the-art animal hospital gaining
experience working with advanced medical equipment. One day a week, the students shadow the staff and volunteer
veterinarians at the Hinsdale Humane Society.
Michael Rosser
Jordan Crist Memorial Extern
Rebecca Saunders
Jordan Crist Memorial Extern
Michael Rosser, University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, Class
of 2015
“The Jordan Crist Memorial Externship was a fantastic experience for me. From
assisting in surgery and working up cases with the doctors at WSVA to helping
with veterinary care at HHS, I have gained a great deal of clinical experience that
will be very helpful in my future as a veterinarian. I hope to use the knowledge I
have gained through this externship to provide veterinary assistance to an animal
shelter in the future.” Mike also said his time at HHS added to his confidence as a
clinician and his desire to pursue shelter medicine as a chosen sub-specialty.
Rebecca Saunders, University of Missouri – Columbia, College of Veterinary
Medicine, Class of 2014
“Shelter medicine is a niche in veterinary medicine that I have wanted to explore
further and this summer I have that opportunity with the Hinsdale Humane Society.
One of the aspects of veterinary medicine I love most is being able to make
both a patient and client satisfied at the end of the day, and shelter medicine is no
exception. By learning about temperament assessment, behavior counseling and
other methods of evaluation, I know I will finish this externship with knowledge
of yet another exciting subset of veterinary medicine and a better ability to foster
the development of the human-animal bond that attracted me to veterinary medicine
in the first place.” Rebecca is ranked first in her class of students.
Robert Reschke Summer Intern: Jamie Gay
Jamie Gay, a senior at Purdue University studying animal science, is our Dr. Robert
Reschke 2012 Summer Intern, working 5 days a week at the shelter. Jamie is a
familiar face around HHS, having previously volunteered as a dog walker and summer
camp counselor. Since fifth grade, Jamie has wanted to be a vet. She has enjoyed seeing
behavioral assessments and health treatment plans in a shelter environment.
“I would really like to work in rehabilitation to help animals directly. This experience
has opened my eyes to determine what is best for the animals’ health.” Jamie is currently
applying to veterinary schools and hopes that her summer internship will be
beneficial to her future career goals.
Pedigree Foundation presents grant to Hinsdale Humane Society
Jim Kenny, Category Manager, Kmart;
Lori Halligan, HHS Executive Director and
Judy Porta, HHS Board President
The Hinsdale Humane Society participated in the 7th Annual Kmart/Pedigree Adoption
event on Thursday, June 14th, at the Kmart/Sears holdings headquarters in Hoffman
Estates, IL. Hinsdale Humane Society, Animal Welfare League, and Save-A-
Vet were invited to showcase animals available for adoption and to distribute adoption
literature.
Hundreds of employees enjoyed a break from their work day to meet the adorable
adoptable animals looking for their forever homes. The kittens, puppies, cats and
dogs enjoyed a day away from their shelter environment, and a day filled with extra
love and attention!
Kmart stores hosts an annual in-store promotion in which they collect a percentage of
sales from PEDIGREE Food for dogs and donate proceeds to animal shelters
throughout the nation. This year, Pedigree generously presented the Hinsdale Humane
Society a donation of $5,000.
We are proud to partner with Pedigree and support their lifesaving mission of helping
shelter animals find loving, forever homes.
Hinsdale Humane Society Blessing of the Pets, Blessing of the Bricks
The weather was particularly sunny and hot, but that didn’t stop approximately 50 guests and 20 pets from enjoying our
third annual Blessing Event on Sunday, June 24. In addition, 51 new bricks were installed in the Carla E. Fisher Memorial
Garden.
Flute music, poems, and a reading of a prayer from St. Francis of Assisi added to the ambiance of the day. Rev. Susan Gerow,
Grace Lutheran Church of La Grange, offered individual blessings for beloved pets, both living and departed.
“Blessing the animals is a way to give thanks for the love between people and their pets. I believe God creates that love
between us,” she reminded us.
After the service, Pastor Gerow said prayers with families as they held hands
over their personalized bricks. The bricks share heartfelt messages of hope
and loss:
You live on in hearts left behind.
Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.
Forever Loved. You will always be deep in my heart, safe in my soul.
In loving memory of Alan Kitzer. Molly was from HHS and when you left us,
she went too – your loyal loving friend.
The Hinsdale Humane Society would like to thank all our animal friends and supporters who have made the Memorial
Garden a special place to celebrate pets and the people who love them, as well as mourn the loss of loved ones dear.
Directors Desk....continued page 1.
The first words out of his mouth were, “It breaks my heart to do this, but I’m going to have to return Harley.” The owner lost
his home and was no longer able to care for his beloved pet. After some tearful goodbyes, Harley was led to a kennel, where
he will learn to reinvent himself with a new family.
The Hinsdale Humane Society will take good care of Harley. We will carefully screen a new family and tell them everything
we know about Harley’s health and habits. But I’m sure the man will worry about his beloved dog.
And I’m trying not to worry about my son now in New Hampshire. Will he remember to pay his bills on time? Will he eat
something other than pizza? Will he remember to call his mother? My heart aches that he is leaving the nest, but he has
hopes, dreams and career aspirations that don’t involve staying in Illinois. Like any newly adopted pet, my son is learning to
adjust to new surroundings.
Yet his mother is struggling to adjust. I’m attempting to live in the moment. I’m trying not to yearn for yesterdays or worry
about tomorrows. And here’s another Emerson quote I’m aiming to live by: Write it on your heart that every day is the best
day in the year.
A special THANK YOU to all of the participating schools, classrooms, and
we have raised a total of
$22,000! That is a lot of coin
counting!
It has been rewarding to see the
loving, and passionate our young
children are toward animals.
Ask Jenny…HHS Operations Manager,
Jennifer Vlazny, answers pet related questions and
offers practical advice.
Q. Now that it’s summer, are my pets at more risk to parasites?
Connie, Indian Head Park
A. Fleas, mosquitoes, and ticks, oh my! Summer is here, and so are the
nasty little critters that wreck havoc with the well-being of our pets. Though
parasites such as these are most common during the warmer months, they can
survive in the right environment all year round. Anytime your pet goes out
into the world -- even in his own backyard or for short walks around the
block, a visit to the veterinarian, a stay at the boarding kennel, a trip to the
groomer, etc. -- he is being exposed to the opportunity for fleas and ticks to
hop aboard or a mosquito to drop by for a quick meal. Fleas not only cause
your dog or cat to itch incessantly, but can pass tapeworms onto your pet and,
if left untreated, can cause life-threatening anemia or weaken your pet’s immune
system making him vulnerable to diseases. Mosquitoes can transmit
deadly heartworm disease, and ticks can cause serious infections to pets such
as lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and ehrlichiosis. These diseases
can even be transmitted to humans!
The greatest defense against parasitic invasion is prevention, so we recommend
a visit to your veterinarian for advice on the best preventive medications
and the safest way to use them. Your veterinarian will be able to show
you the proper way to apply these medications and recommend just the right
dose for your pet to help assure his fun in the sun doesn’t result in any uninvited
house guests!
Kaylee
I wanted to send an update on Kaylee.
I'm happy to report that she is now a
full member of the family and has
even doubled in size! She is playful,
and very adventurous. The best part
about Kaylee is how loving she is.
She loves to sleep in my arms like a
new born baby and will come up meowing
at my feet for love. I wanted to
thank you for your help in adopting
Kaylee. She has brought so much
love, joy and laughter to our home.
It's hard to imagine life without her as
our love for her is so great.
Thank you so much again, Jessie R.
FROM OUR MAILBAG
I adopted my beloved JoJo from HHS
over 13 years ago when he was 8
years old. I recently had to bid him a
teary farewell at age 21 because he
was in failing health. He was the only
cat I ever had and was such a joy! He
moved in to join me and my dog
Maggie, also from HHS, and we all
had a wonderful life together. (Maggie
died at age 18 four years ago.) JoJo
moved with me twice, most recently
to Colorado, and always adjusted
beautifully. He loved visitors and my
three boisterous grandsons and would
get up on the sofa to sit next to (or on)
anyone he took a liking to. He is very
much missed, but I often think
about how wonderful it is that HHS is
there to provide a temporary home for
even older animals until new, permanent
homes can be found. Thank you
for your continued good work on behalf
of the animals.
I adopted Heidi, the 8-year-old tabby cat
about 3 weeks ago and just wanted to
say she's great! I've never had a cat in
my life, but now I'm asking why I
waited so long. The timing was right, for
both of us and we're doing wonderful
together. Thank you. Heidi's the best!
