Director’s Desk

the burden of another.”

They arrived by the back door on a blustery 

Monday when the wind chills were 

20 degrees below 0…three children and 

their mom, bearing a holiday card and 

$84 they had saved from their allowance 

money for the year. One Tuesday morning, 

we were blessed with 2 cases of paper 

towels and 20 pounds of cat litter left 

by the front door before the shelter had 

opened. Children bring us the proceeds 

from lemonade stands. They have birthday 

parties and ask for items from our 

wish list. Then they pile the proceeds in 

the trunk and visit the animals at the 

Hinsdale Humane Society. 

I have lived 6 blocks from the shelter for 

over 10 years. Before I started working 

here, I had no idea of the wonderful acts 

of compassion that occur here every day. 

They are such profound acts that I cannot 

begin to call them routine… the dog 

walkers who come every week at their 

pre-set time, rain or shine, freezing cold 

or atrocious heat… the foster families 

who take on litters of puppies or kittens, 

knowing they will eventually suffer heartwrenching 

loneliness when the babies are 

returned to the shelter to find their forever 

homes… the volunteers who show up on 

holidays when the shelter is closed because 

they don’t want the animals and the 

staff members to be alone… the individuals 

who send us $1 bills with hand written 

notes that they wish they could afford to 

send more… and those truly fortunate 

who write large checks that make us gasp 

because they want to lighten the burden 

of these homeless creatures. 

We get to witness these selfless acts of 

giving on a daily basis. We are truly 

blessed. On behalf of all of us here at 

HHS, we wish you all the best in 2009! 

History of Hinsdale Humane Society - 

“A dog’s life will be a better one in Hinsdale after this fall.” 

- The Doings Newspaper, 1958 lead article 

In 1953, six Hinsdale women were appalled at the condition of the local dog 

pound. The unheated “shack” had no hot water and one light dangling from the 

ceiling. The local newspaper reported “A committee, armed with pick axes and 

disinfectants, has cheerfully 

braved soaring temperatures 

and disconcerting filth in 

order to improve the condition 

of the existing municipal 

building pound, on the theory 

that nobody would want 

a pet impounded for ‘even an 

hour’ in the enclosure as it 

stood at the time.” 

A rabies outbreak was on 

everyone’s mind that summer 

of 1953. 

The women began the Hinsdale 

Humane Society as a 

Hinsdale Humane Society - 1953 

not-for-profit organization 

and established three initial 

goals. First, to educate the 

public in the proper training 

and handling of animals. 

Second, to arrange for humane 

disposal of unclaimed 

and unwanted animals and 

third, to provide a safe and 

sanitary pound which would 

eventually replace the unsatisfactory 

facilities. 

Jim Healy, son of Virginia 

Healy, remembers those early 

days. “I was a junior in high

school and I’d come to the 

shelter every day at 5:00 pm. What was important was taking care of the animals.” 

The beginning years were difficult. The shelter was plagued by lack of 

room and lack of funds. The ladies paid for most of the supplies themselves. 

Jim remembers his mother using her own 1951 Cadillac Deville to pick up 

strays. Because there was no phone, the ladies answered calls from their home 

telephones. The dedication of the volunteers was paramount to the success of 

the organization in our early history. In many ways, the core values of the organization 

have remained unchanged today. continued on page 3

Our holiday gift wrapping is one of 

the most popular fundraising events 

with HHS volunteers. This year we 

booked all 20 shifts in less than two 

weeks! We thank our generous volunteers 

for working at Borders and 

Barnes & Noble and for collecting a 

record breaking total of $3,550! We 

were humbled that even in this tough 

economy, our friends continue to care 

and support HHS. On behalf of the 

shelter and our homeless animals,

to benefit our HHS animals. A total

However, a big change was becoming a reality. “A dog’s 

life will be a better one in Hinsdale after this fall,” read the 

lead article in the July 1958 Hinsdale Doings. The Village 

Board had just given the green light to the Hinsdale Humane 

Society’s plan for a new “dog pound.” The building 

on its present site was dedicated on September 17, 1959 at 

a cost of $25,000. The new shelter had 11 kennels, a small 

room for dogs and cats, and a reception area. It was the 

first Humane Society in DuPage county. 

As part of Humane Education, “The Perils of Pal” brochure 

was developed in 1956. Pony Chambers, one of the original 

founders, was believed to be the commercial artist. The 

brochure was in such demand that the ladies copyrighted 

the contents and shared it with other humane groups. 

From those humble beginnings, HHS is still operating at the same location. The 

building doubled in size in 1974. Remodeling and expansion occurred again in 

1983 for the Society’s 30 th birthday, adding a kitchen and medical treatment room. 

The shelter received its most recent update in 1994, thanks to a major bequest 

from the estate of Charles Hillinger. The surprise gift was even featured on the 

Oprah Winfrey Show in a segment regarding unexpected kindness. 

Of course, the Society’s primary purpose was to place as many animals as possible, 

mostly canines and felines. But throughout the 

Miscellaneous Animals years, other exotic creatures spent time at HHS. In 

Hinsdale Humane -1972 the late 60’s, a peacock was brought in as a stray, before 

it could be reunited with its owners in Oak 

Brook. And in the 80’s a 3 foot long pet snake resided 

here for weeks. We can honestly say that some 

staff members were less than thrilled with this stray 

animal! The Haitian Boa was eventually claimed. 

The owners didn’t realize it was missing and thought 

it was hiding in their home.

Carol Koepke, a McDonald’s veteran, 

is responsible for leading and 

developing strategic direction and 

marketing promotions for 14,700 

McDonald’s Restaurants in the 

United States. Koepke oversees a 

team of marketing professionals 

and directs a team of nine advertising 

and promotional agencies. 

Carol has been a volunteer receptionist 

with HHS for over three 

years and is proud to include her 

two pets as HHS alumni. 

Thomas Prohaska, PhD, is a recognized 

leader and expert in his field 

of geriatric health and has won numerous 

awards for his exceptional 

work. Tom has a true concern and 

commitment to our homeless animals. 

He has been generously sharing 

his time, dog walking and socializing 

animals, as a HHS volunteer 

since 2004.

Top 10 Nutritional Tips for Overweight Pets 

While the new year brings many resolutions to eat right, exercise, and maintain 

a healthy lifestyle, we need to remember our pets need to follow the same plan! 

Obesity is an extremely common problem in pets and can be detrimental to their 

health. The overweight pet has many added stresses upon his body and is at an 

increased risk of diabetes, liver problems and joint pain. 

Let’s make it a point to help our pets maintain good health for years to come by 

incorporating some easy and healthy tips*: 

1. Obesity occurs when energy intake exceeds 

energy requirements. The excess energy is 

then stored as fat. The majority of cases of 

obesity are related to simple overfeeding coupled 

with lack of exercise. 

2. Certain groups of dogs appear more prone 

to obesity than others. Specific breeds 

(Labrador retrievers and pugs, for example) 

and older dogs are particularly prone. 

3. Is your pet too fat You should be able to feel the backbone and palpate the 

ribs in an animal of healthy weight. If you cannot feel your pet’s ribs without 

pressing, there is too much fat. 

4. Also, you should see a noticeable "waist" between the back of the rib cage 

and the hips when looking at your pet from above. Viewed from the side, there 

should be a "tuck" in the tummy—the abdomen should go up from the bottom 

of the rib cage to inside the thighs. 

5. Although there’s less data regarding obesity in cats, it appears to be less common 

in cats than in dogs. It has been suggested that cats have a much better 

ability to regulate their own energy intake. 

6. Play time can be helpful in keeping your cat healthy and fit. This can be a 

simple feather/string cat toy, a crunching bag to bat around, or cat nip inside a 

rolling ball. 

7. Correct Diet. Overweight animals consume more calories than they require. 

Work with your vet to determine your pet’s caloric requirements, select a 

suitable food and calculate how much to feed. 

8. Exercise. Increasing physical activity can be a valuable contributor to both 

weight loss and maintenance. Regular exercise burns more calories, reduces 

appetite, changes body composition and increases resting metabolic rate. 

9. Owner Behavior Modification. A successful weight management program 

requires permanent changes in the behaviors that have allowed the pet to become 

overweight. Perhaps you are giving your pet too many treats, for example, 

or not giving him enough opportunities to exercise. 

10. Are you committed to your pet’s weight loss Here are some important 

things you can do: 

- Remove the pet from the room when the family eats. 

- Measure your pet’s food, according to feeding guidelines. 

- Feed all meals and treats in the pet's bowl only. 

- Reduce snacks or treats. 

- Provide non-food related attention.

Q: My dog gets car sick every time he rides in the car. 

Is there anything I can do

A: The only time many dogs ride in the car is when they are being taken to 

the vet’s office for vaccinations. As a result, they associate the car with 

negative experiences (no one likes getting a shot!), which in turn causes an 

upset tummy. Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to help 

minimize the chance that your dog will be a quivering mass of nerves and 

nausea all the way to your destination. 

You would be wise not to feed your dog a large meal before a car trip, not 

only to reduce nausea, but less to clean up should your dog get sick. The herb 

ginger has been proven to reduce salivation and nausea, so feeding your dog a 

couple ginger snap cookies 30 minutes before a car trip may help, as well. 

Since your dog’s queasy stomach is more than likely the result of the anticipation 

of a negative experience, behavior modification techniques to re-program 

your dog’s perception of riding in the car may help. 

Start by having your dog sit in the car in your driveway while you give him 

some tasty treats and/or a favorite toy. Remove him after a few minutes and 

go for a fun walk or initiate play time. After several repeated sessions over a 

number of days, invite your dog into the car again, but turn the engine on and 

continue to praise, treat, play. Once your dog is used to the car running without 

any fearful reaction, go for a short drive. Always end your sessions with 

lots of praise and play time. 

The first time you take a longer trip, make sure it is to a “fun” place like a 

dog-friendly park or for a walk in the woods. Your goal is to gradually modify 

your dog’s thinking over time so it will begin to view the car as a means to 

go somewhere enjoyable. 

Though an occasional trip to the vet will still be in order as needed, the car 

has now become a great place for attention, praise, treats, and a fun-time with 

his favorite person – you!

Shelter receives $25,000 Anonymous Bequest 

The Hinsdale Humane Society recently received a $25,000 bequest from an anonymous 

and very generous donor. It is with quiet admiration that we express our 

wholehearted thanks for this charitable act of giving. The individual cherished her 

beloved dog, and wanted to leave a legacy for the furry friends here at HHS. This 

gift will live on… saving homeless animals for years to come. 

We respect the privacy of our donors and friends. A gift made to HHS will be 

used and acknowledged in a manner which the giver feels most comfortable. We 

never share our mailing list with other charitable organizations. 

Gifts received through wills, trusts, and bequests are the financial foundation that 

makes possible the many programs HHS offers for both people and animals.

I adopted Willow, a 1 1/2 year old 

grey tabby cat, from HHS in Feb ‘08. 

She is doing great and she is such an 

adorable lady. Currently, she is a big 

sister of my 4 cat family - Willow, 

Ginger, Snowy and Sardina. She is 

absolutely perfect for me! Oakbrook 

I adopted Leo from HHS 9/07. I 

wanted to let you know how well he is 

doing one year later. I have gained 

his trust and he is a wonderful companion.

I wanted to give an update about our 

dog named Gus that we adopted from 

HHS in Dec. ‘06. Sadly, we had to 

make the toughest decision of our lives 

and put Gus to rest. Gus was diagnosed 

with cancer, he was 11. 

Gus 

We wanted to thank HHS and all of the 

staff and volunteers that allowed us the 

privilege of adopting Gus. He was the 

GREATEST DOG and brought us 3 

wonderful years of nonstop happiness. 

There will never be another dog like 

Gus as he was one in a million. We will 

love and miss him forever and will 

never forget the day we met him.
