10 Save the Date(s)… Pet Camp Are you looking for a summer adventure for your children Adventures in Animal Awareness is a week-long day camp that introduces children going into 4 th -6 th grades to the world of animals through interactive guest visits and field trips. It’s so much fun, the kids don’t realize they are learning! Mark your calendars for our 2013 dates: June 10-14, June 17-21 and August 5-9. Details will be available soon. HHS 24rd Annual Pet Walk Sunday, June 2nd We can hardly wait for Pet Walk 2013 coming up on June 2nd at Katherine Legge Memorial Park, Hinsdale. Pet Walk is our largest fundraiser of the year. All money raised through pledges, donations, registration, sponsorship, and prize raffles help our homeless animals year round. Registration information and event details will be available on our website www.hinsdalehumanesociety.org. 2013 is our 60th Anniversary! It’s hard to believe we’ve been helping animals in our community since 1953. We are beginning to plan for some wonderful recognition events throughout the year. If you have historical photos, articles or other information you’d like to share, we’d love to hear from you! We are especially interested in hearing from descendants of our early days, our “founding mothers” as we like to call them! Matching Gifts for Hinsdale Humane Society Imagine the impact you and the company you work for can make in helping our furry friends! Many people do not realize their corporations participate in a matching gift program. In addition to the donation from an employee, the donation amount may be doubled or tripled by the corporation! For instance, if an individual donates $100, their corporation may donate an additional $100 to $300. Any amount is greatly appreciated and goes directly to helping the Hinsdale Humane Society care for homeless animals as they await adoption. Think about the immense change your heartfelt donation will make by simply checking into a matching gift program. The few steps that you can take will change an animal’s life. First, check with your employer to see if they match gifts. Next, fill out your company’s paperwork and submit the paperwork to the shelter along with your donation. It is simple and easy. We will do the rest of the work for you! Thank you! “Pennies for Paws” 2013 Spare Change Drive, April 15 - May 17th The “Pennies for Paws” spare change drive, now in its 5th year, has raised over $22,000! That’s a lot of change - helping a lot of animals. Join the Hinsdale Humane Society and area schools as we work together to help raise awareness of homeless pets, to educate hundreds of children, and to make a difference in our community. Animal related lesson plans and classroom presentations are also available at no cost. Classrooms, students, children’s clubs or groups are invited to collect spare change for the Hinsdale Humane Society. Madison School Classroom enjoys a pizza party and trophy presentation from “Pennies for Paws 2012” Participating classrooms can win great prizes, too, including movie tickets, pizza, and trophies. Q. My dog loves to sit in the kitchen while I’m cooking but he quickly picks up any food that gets dropped. I know there are certain things that are bad for him. Is there a way to teach him not to pick up scraps A. Dogs don’t come with an understanding of what they can and can’t have; especially in the kitchen or around food. One of my favorite commands, “Leave it” teaches our pets the concept of “don’t even think about it.” · Using both hands, place one treat in “Hand 1” and 2-3 small treats in “Hand 2”. · Place Hand 1 (with one treat) near the dog’s nose and Hand 2 (with several treats) behind your back. · When the dog puts his nose or mouth on your hand, say “Leave It” in a firm voice. Wait a moment. · As soon as your dog turns away or pulls his head back, praise and treat from Hand 2. · Repeat “Leave It” once if necessary. If he does not pull away after 2 commands, lure him away from the treat with Hand 2 – and treat and praise from Hand 2 when he turns away. Repeat the exercise, luring with your second hand if necessary. When he pulls away from the treat on the first command, praise the dog and open Hand 1 to deliver the treat while you say “Take It”. As you progress, you should expect your dog to stay off while you show the treat. If he moves toward Hand 1, treat, close your hand and repeat “Leave It”. Once your dog understands, expand the margins. Place a treat on the floor in front of your dog, ready to cover it quickly with Hand 1 when the dog moves toward it and repeat as you did before, remembering to always pick up the treat from the floor before allowing your dog to “take it” using the command. Remember: Don’t use this until the dog has mastered it in training sessions – it won’t be effective and will confuse the dog. Be sure to use the “Take It” when you give the treat, you don’t want him to think the praise word means he can scoop up the item from the floor. This command is useful for keeping dogs safe in a variety of settings. It can be used to keep them from picking up dropped food or medications; it can control the impulse to approach another dog, and can help give you some peace of mind by expanding the command to shoes, squirrels or other dog-enticing objects. Kym Iffert is the obedience trainer and humane educator at HHS. She is a certified mentor and dog trainer for Animal Behavior College and is a licensed Pet Partner Therapy evaluator, Family Paws presenter and a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers.
