Forever Young – Berlin 

It’s Berlin’s birthday. Not a 

particularly round one 

(775th) and even the date 

of birth is not set in stone 

(1237 is the first mention in 

a document, and even there, 

to be exact, only the 

sister town of Cölln features) 

– but there is definitely 

a cause for celebration. 

Equally the last jubilee celebration, the 750th 

birthday in 1987, remains a not too distant past for 

many Berliners. The museums are first in line to congratulate. 

110 of them are taking part in this Long 

Night and many of them have, as a birthday present 

if you like, picked up the two key themes of this jubilee 

in their guided tours, literary and musical programmes: 

Berlin at the time its foundation in the 

13th century and the diverse Berlin that has grown 

through immigration in the eight centuries since 

then. These institutions are signified with a large 

pink »B« in the programme booklet. There are also 

two unique open air exhibitions dedicated to these 

themes, which will open on the Long Night. In a location 

that no-one could have anticipated, on the sixlane 

road over Mühlendamm, eight exhibition towers 

will display the Spuren des Mittelalters (Traces of the 

Middle Ages) and on the lawn of the Schlossplatz a 

giant city map, scaled 1:775 (!) invites visitors to 

take a closer look at the areas of the city that have 

been of special importance in the history of immigration: 

Berlin – Stadt der Vielfalt (City of Diversity). On 

this Long Night, now the 31st, there are many new 

things to discover from the Zitadelle Spandau to the 

Schloss Köpenick, from the Zucker Museum in Wedding 

to the museums in Dahlem. Berlin remains at 

the fine old age of 775 an extremely lively museum 

city, ever changing, or as the city jubilee posters put 

it, Forever Young. Congratulations!

to Berlin’S 31 St long nigHt oF tHe MuSeuMS 

Berlin is celebrating its 775th birthday – and the Long 

Night of the Museums is celebrating too. In their different 

ways the museums all reflect the changing history 

of the city. Twice a year on the Long Night of the 

Museums these institutions open their doors until 

long after midnight. This summer 110 of the 200+ 

museums and memorials invite you in to make new 

discoveries. As with every Long Night many of the loyal 

favourites are on board, as well as some that have 

taken a break and a few new participants, coming 

together to offer a highly varied programme. Bertelsmann 

Unter den Linden 1, the Dalí exhibition and the 

Industriesalon Schöneweide are, for example, all involved 

for the first time. There is plenty to discover 

for both Long Night amateurs and Long Night connoisseurs. 

The entrance tickets are also valid for the 

comfortable shuttle bus service, which offers a direct 

connection between the venues. 

CoMBitiCKet 

Valid in all participating venues (from 6pm) and for 

the use of shuttle busses as well as all public 

transport (Berlin zones ABC) between 3 pm and 5 

am. Price € 18, concessions € 12, free for children 

up to 12 years. Concessions are available upon 

receipt of identification for school or university 

students, trainees, the unemployed and recipients 

of Hartz IV, those performing German military or 

civil service, pensioners and disabled persons. 

Concessionary combi-tickets are not available 

from S-Bahn or BVG ticket machines or online. Annual 

passes for individual museums are not valid 

for this event. Due to limited spatial capacity the 

Pergamon Museum is not participating in the Long 

Night; however, two-for-one tickets are available 

for visitors who present their Long Night tickets on 

Thursdays 4–9 pm, 1.8–30.9.2012.

The Long Night of the Museums is one of Berlin’s 

best known events, giving visitors from all over the 

world a great overview of the museum landscape 

in Germany’s capital. About 110 museums will 

open their doors on August 25th 2012 from 6 pm 

until 2 am to show their collections, exhibitions, 

and to offer guided tours and special programmes 

to the public. This summer Berlin is celebrating its 

775th anniversary with a special focus on its beginnings 

in medieval times as well as its current 

character as a cosmopolitan and diverse city (p. 34). 

Many museums will display related items from 

their collections, offer special Guided tours (in 

German) and musical and literary performances 

on the 775 theme. 

tiCKetS 

The Kombiticket provides entry to all participating 

venues, unlimited use of the shuttle bus service 

and unlimited use of public transportation (BVG 

and S-Bahn) in zones ABC (3 pm–5 am Sunday). 

Price: 18 € /concessions 12€ 

SHuttle BuSeS 

Although many venues are within walking distance 

from the two centres (Kulturforum and Museums– 

insel), many more are spread throughout the city; 

therefore the shuttle bus service helps you to na- 

vigate your way between the museums and enables 

you to see as much as possible. On each bus 

there will be a steward on hand answering any 

question you may have. 

SuitABle For ForeignerS? 

People are often unsure whether the Long Night of 

the Museums is suitable for non-German speakers. 

The answer is: yes, it is! Due to the wide range of 

programmes on offer, German is no precondition 

for attending the Long Night. Many venues offer information 

in English, and many other exhibitions 

and programme highlights are self-explanatory. The 

following are a few suggestions… 

ProgrAMMe HigHligHtS 

u Berliner Dom 

The largest and most prominent church in Berlin 

invites visitors to explore its interiors and to discover 

how it has evolved from its early stages until 

today. The dome will open its doors with a Vespers 

by the organist Andreas Sieling. You will also have 

the opportunity to have a look at the renowned 

Sauer-Orgel by taking part in guided tours at 7, 

7.45 and 8.30 pm. In the course of the evening Andreas 

Sieling will play Berlin organ music (9 and 10 

pm) and festive brass music will entertain the visitors 

at 11 and 12 pm. 

u ephraim-palais 

The grand Rococo mansion with its impressive oval 

staircase houses various special exhibitions of the 

City Museum Berlin concerning Berlin’s history of art 

and culture. Two exhibitions will be presented – one 

about important citizens of Berlin who had an essential 

part in forming the city that we know today, and 

the other about the stage designer and illustrator 

Werner Victor Toeffling. Apart from that, you can either 

let a professional scissor cutter make a silhouette 

of your liking or you can be a scissor cutter yourself 

(6–9 pm). Later at night, two young local 

musicians will amaze you with electronic Jazz-Swing 

(9 pm–1 am). 

u Zoo-Aquarium 

With its extensive biodiversity, Berlin’s Zoo-Aquarium 

ranks among the most significant show aquariums 

worldwide. At 8, 9.30 and 11 pm visitors will 

have the chance to see how sea dwellers, like 

sharks and rays, are fed and there will also be a 

special exhibition presenting the breeding and 

keeping of jellyfish. Moreover, the duo Bassophon 

will provide accompanying musical entertainment. 

u DDR Museum 

In this museum you will have the opportunity to 

experience the life in the GDR in all its facets and 

its history at first hand. The programme will focus 

on the celebration of East Berlin’s 750th anniversary 

in 1987, by providing a multimedia presentation 

(8 pm) and by playing music from the festivities 

(10–11 pm). Next to that, hits and unknown 

musical treasures from GDR times about Berlin 

and the year 1987 will be played all night long. 

u MocTA 

The trashiest museum in the world shows artworks 

made of recycled material. The night begins 

with a DADA-Opera – a performance called »Trash 

queen emigrates and immigrates« (8 pm). Visitors 

will also have the chance to watch a movie about 

migration (9 pm) and to marvel at the trash iest 

items from the largest collection of artist books 

which the collector Reinhard Gruener himself will 

present at 10 pm .

Six of the seven bus routes start and end at the 

Kulturforum. Setting off at the start of the Long 

Night, the buses will conveniently transport visitors 

to the museums and memorials, often straight to 

their doors. 

Currywurst Museum mobile 

The German Currywurst Museum Berlin is on show 

at the Kulturforum with its bright red mini truck 

and mascot QWoo. From 6 to 10 pm visitors have 

the opportunity to take a special Long Night photo 

with the truck and the cheerful two-metre-tall currywurst. 

Social Media 

A joy shared is a joy doubled. The Long Night of 

the Museums invites all social media fans to Facebook 

and Twitter – here they will find tips, answers, 

special offers and a whole lot more before, during 

and after the big event, from the editorial team and 

other Long Night visitors. From mid-August all Twitter 

users can post their comments, photos and links 

about the 31st Long Night of the Museums on the 

Twitterwall. Posts will be visible on plasma screens 

at the festival centres the whole Long Night. On top 

of that there is a new YouTube channel with background 

reports and an image film for the Long Night 

of the Museums.

of the Long Night of the Museums in the historic 

centre of Berlin, at Schlossplatz. Three large, recently 

opened exhibitions on the city jubilee will be 

open to visitors. »Stadt der Vielfalt« (City of Diversity) 

is at Schlossplatz, »Spuren des Mittelalters« (Traces 

of the Middle Ages) on Mühlendamm and »Die 

Stadtjubiläen« (The City Jubilees) in front of the Marienkirche;

For eight hundred years people from all over the 

world have been giving the city impetus for change. 

With the jubilee theme »City of Diversity« the 

Long Night of the Museums is bringing together 

people from all over: from 4 pm the Lustgarten will 

be the location of a colourful picnic. There will be 

pots, pans and bowls of delicacies from around 

the world for visitors to try. Gourmets with a taste 

for fresh air need only bring a picnic mat to make 

themselves comfortable for a culinary journey 

through Berlin and the whole world. 

theatre Anu: Auf der reise (travelling) 

Theatre Anu tells short poetic stories evoking powerful 

images. The characters in this production are 

on the great journey of life and report back full of 

hope, despite their weariness, on their search for 

meaning and happiness. The theatre installation is 

open from 9 pm until midnight. 

rickshaws 

There is a very special offer for Long Night visitors 

on Unter den Linden: if you show your ticket you 

can get a free bicycle rickshaw ride from one museum 

to the next. Right up until midnight the rickshaw 

route will connect the Marienkirche with the Forum 

Willy Brandt, and all the venues in-between: DDR 

Museum, Berliner Dom, Altes Museum, Humboldt- 

Box, Bertelsmann, Deutsches Historisches Museum, 

Deutsche Guggenheim and Automobil Forum.

Forever Young 

This autumn Berlin is celebrating its 775th. Not 

much in comparison to places like Augsburg, Trier 

or Cologne – but nonetheless! Founded at a key trade 

connection at a good crossing over the Spree river 

– today’s Mühlendamm bridge – Berlin has been 

drawing people in from all over the world for eight 

hundred years: traders and craftsmen, monks and 

adventurers, refugees, the unemployed and the 

simply curious. All of these people make the city 

into the modern metropolis that today’s Berliners – 

wherever they might have come from – are so proud 

of. This is going to be celebrated with a big party on 

the 28th October! As twilight falls, French fire-poe- 

ts »Carabosse« will showcase the city’s historic 

centre and street theatre group »Titanick« will create 

a world full of wonders, oddities and surprises. 

A comprehensive programme of tours and events 

will focus on architectural monuments and familiarise 

visitors with medieval craftsmanship, art and music. 

Three open air exhibitions dedicated to the jubilee 

will be opened on the Long Night of the Museums. 

tHe MiDDle AgeS Are AMongSt uS 

No-one expects Berlin to have authentic medieval 

flair, yet there is an amazing amount to discover if 

you have a guide to show you where. For the jubilee 

you are invited to take a fascinating journey through

time at the authentic birthplaces of the city. The 

Middle Ages were not nearly so dark and dreary as 

they are often depicted. It was a period of invention 

and adventure – merchants from far away settled in 

Berlin, traders brought wares from across the 

world, builders and craftsmen came to the newly 

founded town. Excavations in recent years have uncovered 

many articles from the Middle Ages: everyday 

items, graves, foundations of houses, churches 

and schools. Eight exhibition towers, placed around 

the Mühlendamm and along the Grunerstraße and 

Gertraudenstraße, have displays on the period of 

the foundation of Berlin and Cölln. The exhibition project 

»Traces of the Middle Ages«, which also features 

500 location markers around the medieval town centre, 

assembles pieces of a puzzle made up excavation 

sites, historical sources and preserved documents 

to form the most complete and animated 

picture possible of the twin towns in the medieval 

period. A comprehensive programme of tours and 

events focuses on architectural monuments and 

seeks to familiarise visitors with medieval craftsmanship, 

art and music (see also Klosterruine, p. 116).

Berlin’s growth, dymanism and vitality have for centuries 

been founded on the impulse of migration

bition »City of Diversity« visitors can walk through a 

giant map of Berlin on Schlossplatz, bringing the 

(hi)stories of immigration to a wider public including, 

artistic, religious and scientific diversity. It 

was at Rosenthaler Platz, for example, that the philosopher 

Moses Mendelssohn, coming from Dessau 

in 1743, entered the city – at that time the only 

entrance gate for Jews. In his backpack he had the 

ideas of the Enlightenment, which he proceeded to 

spread in Berlin. Around the corner in the Torstraße 

Wladimir Kaminer’s »Russendisko« presents an 

image of recent Russian influences. In Charlottenburg, 

moreover, the first Turkish Berliners were not 

Gastarbeiter (post-war guest workers) but the 

»Kammertürken« (Chamber Turks) Aly and Hassan, 

in the service of Queen Sophie Charlotte 300 years 

ago. There are in total 100 representative stories, 

which explain how immigration is interwoven into 

every corner of the city. Complete with light projections 

on the influences of immigrants on science, 

music, literature, sport and other areas, the exhibition 

offers a powerful panorama on the theme. . 

WHere it All Went DoWn 

Berlin has celebrated its birthday only twice before, 

and each time it was a particularly political 

event. Many will still remember the 750 years celebrations 

in the divided city – either those in the

East or the West. In 1937 National Socialist Berlin 

celebrated 700 years of the city. The first exhibition 

to compare Berlin cty jubilees, located outside 

the Marienkirche, is an interesting exploration of 

the interaction between the city’s perception of 

itself and political display. It shows that how the 

Nazi celebrations were relatively traditional and 

carried out at a community level, whereas the environment 

of political competition fifty years later 

led to many tensions and curious displays.

A main attraction is the former largest European 

sequencing lever control centre in operation from 

1931 to 1983. 


Construction Time Again 

In 2010 the artist Katharina Heilein worked 

together with U-Bahn fans and experts to build a 

model of the once planned but never completed 

U-Bahn line U10. The contributors took the 

historical planning of a missing northeast to 

southwest tangent as inspiration and designed 

15 stations for each of their local areas. Here 

the museum presents the U10 model station of 

Rathaus Steglitz.

Forest education tour through the museum 

Expanding from a conventional forest museum, in 

1991 the Waldmuseum became an »active museum«, 

where visitors can pick up almost everything. 

They can learn what a wild boar or fox pelt feels 

like, or what a tawny owl or a spotted woodpecker 

sound like. In the forest garden behind the house 

evening tea and small snacks will be served.

Forest educators invite you to join a mysterious 

night walk. The walk will include a moor, a lake

The Bode Museum is home of the sculpture collection, 

the museum of Byzantine art, and the coins 

cabinet, showing art from the early Middle Ages to 

the late 18th century, but also works of art and utility 

objects from the late antiquity and Byzantine 

period. 


Schätze des Glaubens (Treasures of Faith) 

The most famous testaments to medieval church 

art from the National Museums' Museum of Decorative 

Arts, Berlin, and the Cathedral Museum, 

Hildesheim, have been brought together in a show 

hosted in the Bode Museum. The centrepiece of 

this exhibition is formed by key works from the 

Welfenschatz (which once made up the church 

treasure of the Collegiate Church of Saint Blaise 

in Braunschweig, also known as Brunswick), as 

well as from the Hildesheim Cathedral treasure.

We’re Travelling Through Time – Berlin of 

Yesterday 

Many statues that once stood guard over sumptuous 

houses are on show in the museum. In 

the palace where the Kaiser once lived even the 

windows were decorated with them. A journey into

the end children can explore their imagination

Stalin Memorial, the Workers Uprising and postwar 

town planning, with many personal stories.

The museum dedicated to the blind has a collection 

of over 1000 exhibits including various aids 

for the blind, books, photos and paintings. 


Six Right! 

Louis Braille and Embossed Printing 

In 1825 the young Frenchman Louis Braille invented 

the six-dot system and opened the door for 

blind people to participate in education, careers 

and culture. This simple and ingenious writing 

system spread around the world, made the leap 

into the computer age and, in spite of modern speech 

programmes, is still used in the current day.

For Berlin’s 775 years celebrations the City Museum 

of Berlin has dedicated an exhibition to the »doers« 

of the city, those who Goethe once caled an »audacious 

race« who have lived here since 1237 and make 

Berlin such a unique place. Past and present are displayed 

through the depiction of individual Berliners 

who have lived in the city, spread their influence and 

given it such diverse stimuli. 

StadtRaumBühne. Werner-Viktor Toeffling 

zum 100. Geburtstag 

Werner-Viktor Toeffling (1912–2001) is known 

above all for his stage designs and furnishings for 

the German State Opera and the Hebbel Theatre. 

He has also made a name for himself with his drawings 

and paintings of the Berlin city landscape. 

At the centre of the jubilee display his surreal 

pictures of rooms, designs and paintings express 

his contemplation over questions of meaning and 

existence.

The private Kelle Film Academy houses a collection of 

historic film cameras, providing a cross-section of the 

development of this technology over a century. 


The exhibition of historical models illustrates the 

family tree of modern film cameras. The oldest 

exhibit is the first European fully metal camera, 

used by Debrie le Parvo, who worked with Dziga 

Vertov and Sergej Eisenstein amongst others. Recently 

the collecton also acquired a Bell & Howell 

Zoomatic Director 414 PD; the same camera was 

used by the textile factory owner and amateur 

film-maker Abraham Zapruder when he captured 

the assassination of John F. Kennedy on 22nd 

November 1963 in Dallas, Texas.

HERAKUT is one of the most unusual artistic 

duos of the grafitti scene. Two completely different 

artisitic writing styles come together in a perfect

to the urban realm in expressing insightful stories 

through their characters or social grievances, 

working on screens and paper, and creating sculptures

The Industriesalon has made it its mission to demonstrate

Electron Tube Display 

The collection from the former Television Electronics 

Plant in Schöneweide offers an insight into the 

intricate and complicated process of manufacturing 

electron tubing. On display are typical means of production 

and system parts used in the production of 

tubes and their various applications – for example 

in interfering transmitters against the Radio In the 

American Sector (RIAS) or in GDR microwaves.

775 Years of Berlin – An Emigrant Monologue 

In the 1920s and 30s Berlin was a refuge for 

thousand of Jewish migrants from East Europeans. 

What Berlin meant to these people is shown 

through texts, images and music. Mascha Kaléko, 

born in what is now Poland, captured in her verse 

the atmosphere of the metropolis Berlin. Her »Emi- 

grant Monologue« leads to a search for clues in the 

permanent exhibition. The poem can also be heard 

as an audio piece in the lobby of the museum, spoken 

by the actress Sophie Rois. Over the course of the 

evening it will be continually extended by the thoughts 

visitors express on today’s Berlin, establising a sound 

installationof the city yesterday and today. The sound 

installation will be carried out live by the composer 

and musician Thomas Meadowcroft.

The Franciscan monastery church was once one 

of the most important Gothic edifices of the city. 

Its ruin now rates among the oldest testimonies to 

medieval Berlin. Although heavily damaged during 

the war, the church is nowadays used for exhibitions 

and events.

The house next to the Nikolai Church is one of 

the few remaining civilian houses of the 18th 

century. The furnishings, complete with winged 

chair, fireplace, books and pipes, conveys the

19th century. The salon and the library give the 

impression that the Knoblauchs have only just left 

the building.

influence of Frederick the Great’s literary work. At

The dinosaur hall

The museum’s collection stores 30 million objects, 

from fossils and preserved animal specimens to 

minerals and up to 4.5 billion-year-old meteorites. 

A particular highlight is the world’s largest 

dinosaur displayed in a museum. In the East Wing 

a large research collection of formaldehyde-preserved 

specimens is accessible to the public. 


Evolution in Activity 

Life is an obvious and yet unique phenomenon in 

our universe, as far as we know. Closely linked to 

life is evolution; the exhibition conveys how evolution 

is everywhere and how the cosmos, Earth and 

life are all connected. 


Kingdom of Elephants – A World of Fossils in 

Europe 

The treasure rescued by archaeologists from the 

Neumark-Nord brown coal excavation pit near Halle 

in 1985 is around 200 000 years old. Relics of a 

whole sea habitat had been retained in the fossil 

deposit. At the centre of the exhibition is the skull 

and further remains of 70 Eurasian straight-tusked 

elephants.

Old Berliners and immigrants in the Museum 

für Naturkunde 

Berlin is celebrating and the museum too. The history 

of the museum is closely bound to the history 

of the German capital. The museum not only received 

exactly 775 objects from the Berlin nature 

researcher Alexunder von Humboldt but there 

are also legacies to discover from the kaisers, 

from the wars and »rooms without ears« (i.e. that 

were not monitored by the Stasi). Many original 

Berlin species are on show in the collection, but 

also famous »immigrants« like the Brachiosaurus 

brancai and Berlin’s Archaeopteryx.

exhibition on the classical city of

panorama by the Berlin artist Yadegar Asisi. 

The all-round view of the historic city and the 

castle hill with its spectacular buildings, from 

a 15 metre tall visitor platform, places the visitor 

in the year 129 AD and gives an engrossing 

image of how the sculptures and the architec-

ture shown in the exhibition would have been 

erected. Due to limited spatial capacity in the 

temporary exhibition and the Asisi panorama 

the Pergamonmuseum is not taking part in the

for the city Köpenick, which did not become part of 

Berlin until 1920. It impresses especially with its facade 

that reminds one of the Märkisch gothic brick 

style. The house gained popularity as the setting of the 

events surrounding the Hauptmann von Köpenick.

In keeping with Berlin’s 775 years jubilee the Tourism 

Association Berlin Treptow- Köpenick presents 

the spirit of the early 20th century – Cöpenick, first 

mentioned in 1209, only became a constituent of

exhibition on the building of the house and to the 

Köpenickiade, the Town Councillor Assembly Hall 

and the registry office with lead-paned windows,

The annex of the Kunstgewerbemuseum in the 

baroque Schloss Köpenick presents artwork of 

decor from the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo 

era. One of the highlights is the famous silver buffet 

from the Berliner Schloss as well as the richly 

designed heraldic hall. 


Porcelain for the Palaces of Frederick the Great 

During the Seven Years War Frederick the Great seized 

the Meissen Porcelain Factory and made them produce 

the coveted porcelain for his court. In 1763 he founded 

the royal factory with the sceptre as a trademark. He 

became passionate about porcelain and often had an 

influence on the form and decoration.

80 years after his death, the artist Heinrich Zille is still 

revered for his sharp, tongue-in-cheek illustrations of 

Berlin’s society. Berlin’s 80th honorary citizen is celebrated 

in this exhibition, which contains original drawings 

and etchings as well as photographs of the artist. 


Heinrich Zille (1858–1929) gave a face to a phase 

of Berlin’s history characterized by the Industrial 

Revolution, population growth and poverty. Working 

tirelessly to translate his observations into 

significant depictions of urban life Heinrich Zille 

created a body of work with quality and originality 

that has spawned generations of fans. The Zille 

Museum contains a comprehensive presentation 

on his life and works as well as drawings, lithographs 

and photographs.

Schiebe-Schorsch (aka Jörg Kersten) brings popular 

tunes from 1920s Berlin – by Paul Linke, Walter 

and Willi Kollo – back to life, with assistance from

Archäologen der Zukunft wäre das KaDeWe heute eine Schatzkammer. Vom
