suggested that she swim the marathon she thought he
was crazy. That same night she had a dream about the
marathon and after encouraging words from her husband
Rodney she decided to enter the training schedule.
‘Preparations were quite hard; I was the slowest during
training’, says Usha. Her trainers convinced her though that
she was not to compare herself to the more experienced
swimmers.
Wijnalduim wanted to quit during the marathon. ‘Just
after the start, I was the only one swimming in the back.
I wanted to quit, but I continued swimming. After a while I
saw Chafihd Tapessur another Parima rookie. And then I
saw some more swimmers from the other clubs. I no longer
wanted to quit.’ At the finish at Marinetrap she was surprised
with her ranking. ‘Wow I made it’ was the first thing
that went through her mind. In retrospect, the marathon was
quite tough. Her time was 3.32.56. She had not expected
though she would be third in her age category. She is 100
percent sure she will be at the start next year.
