never weighed a question <strong>of</strong> civic or personal honor in the scale<br />

<strong>of</strong> policy.<br />

Mr. Shaw was united in marriage to Aiiss Annie E. Eustace, a<br />

sister <strong>of</strong> Judge John V. Eustace and a daughter <strong>of</strong> the Kev.<br />

Thomas Eustace, a Presbyterian clergyman, who was a native <strong>of</strong><br />

Dublin, Ireland, and who married Fannie Ohustead. Mr. and<br />

Mi's. Shaw had three sons: Ered, <strong>of</strong> Denver, Colorado; Eustace,<br />

deceased, who for some years was his father's associate in business;<br />

and Dr. Lloyd L. Shaw. Mrs. Shaw passed away February<br />

6, 1905, and four and one-half years later Benjamin P. Shaw<br />

departed this life. He was a member <strong>of</strong> the Elks lodge and <strong>of</strong><br />

the Dixon Club. There was, perhaps, in Dixon no man more<br />

widely known and none who had labored more loyally for the<br />

interests <strong>of</strong> the city and state.<br />

A. J. LAUER.<br />

A. J. Lauer has for the past two decades been successfully<br />

identified with business interests <strong>of</strong> Sublette as an implement<br />

dealer and also as the proprietor <strong>of</strong> a plumbing establishment. <strong>Lee</strong><br />

county numbers him among her native sous, his birth having occurred<br />

in Sublette township in 1857. His parents, Andrew and<br />

Katherine (Strubel) Lai;er, are lioth deceased and lie buried at<br />

Sublette, <strong>Illinois</strong>. The father passed away in 1898, while the<br />

mother died September 15, 1876.<br />

Hi the acquirement <strong>of</strong> an education A. J. Lauer attended school<br />

in Sublette until twelve years <strong>of</strong> age and subsequently assisted his<br />

father in the operation <strong>of</strong> the home farm for eleven years. On the<br />

expiration <strong>of</strong> that period he purchased a tract <strong>of</strong> land and devoted<br />

his attention to its cultivation until 1893, when he embarked in the<br />

plumbing and implement business at Sulilette. He has successfully<br />

conducted this establishment throughout the intervening<br />

twenty years and is widely recognized as one <strong>of</strong> the prosperous,<br />

enterprising and representative citizens <strong>of</strong> the community.<br />

On the 30tli <strong>of</strong> October, 1883, in Sublette, Mr. Lauer was united<br />

in marriage to Miss Katherine Hildmann, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Conrad<br />

and Anna (Neis) Hildmann, who are deceased and lie buried in<br />

Sublette. Mr. and Mrs. Lauer have one child. Amor, who assists<br />

his father in the conduct <strong>of</strong> his biTsiness. The family residence was<br />

erected by our subject.
