<strong>Development</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pool Plat, Flixton. Part Four.<br />

Thomas <strong>Royle</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pendleton; <strong>The</strong> Bent families <strong>of</strong> Flixton;<br />

Background to <strong>the</strong> purchase <strong>of</strong> Pool Plat.<br />

In ‘Part Four’ we shall look at some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> extended trade l<strong>in</strong>ks which <strong>the</strong> <strong>Royle</strong>s<br />

established <strong>in</strong> neighbour<strong>in</strong>g Pendleton, Salford <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> family <strong>in</strong>fluences which <strong>the</strong>se<br />

trade l<strong>in</strong>ks engendered. We will also cont<strong>in</strong>ue to look at those Flixton families which<br />

had an effect upon <strong>the</strong> sale <strong>and</strong> ultimate purchase <strong>of</strong> Pool Plat <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> both cases<br />

scrut<strong>in</strong>ise census returns <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> memorial <strong>in</strong>scriptions <strong>of</strong> St. Michael’s Parish Church,<br />

Flixton, <strong>in</strong> order to establish family l<strong>in</strong>ks. Baptism records <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> archives <strong>of</strong> Greater<br />

Manchester County Record Office <strong>and</strong> Lancashire County Record Office will also be<br />

used, where significant, to identify family, trade <strong>and</strong> historical <strong>in</strong>fluences <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

purchase <strong>and</strong> development <strong>of</strong> Pool Plat , which was about to undergo a dramatic<br />

transformation. However, it was not just Flixton Village which was undergo<strong>in</strong>g an<br />

economic transformation at <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Royle</strong>s. On <strong>the</strong> east side <strong>of</strong> St. Michael’s<br />

churchyard is a headstone which reads,<br />

“In lov<strong>in</strong>g memory <strong>of</strong> Thomas <strong>the</strong> beloved husb<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Susan <strong>Royle</strong> who passed on<br />

April 3 rd 1935 aged 75 years also <strong>of</strong> Susan his beloved wife who passed on Dec. 22 nd<br />

1945 aged 84 years also <strong>of</strong> James eldest son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above who died Nov. 20 th 1947 aged<br />

59 years also <strong>of</strong> Alfred (Fred) second son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above Thomas <strong>and</strong> Susan <strong>Royle</strong> who<br />

died Feby. 28 th 1950 aged 58 years also <strong>of</strong> Thomas Edgar youngest son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above<br />
