The Roles of William and John Henry Royle in the
Development of Pool Plat, Flixton. Part Four.
Thomas Royle of Pendleton; The Bent families of Flixton;
Background to the purchase of Pool Plat.
In ‘Part Four’ we shall look at some of the extended trade links which the Royles
established in neighbouring Pendleton, Salford and the family influences which these
trade links engendered. We will also continue to look at those Flixton families which
had an effect upon the sale and ultimate purchase of Pool Plat and in both cases
scrutinise census returns and the memorial inscriptions of St. Michael’s Parish Church,
Flixton, in order to establish family links. Baptism records and the archives of Greater
Manchester County Record Office and Lancashire County Record Office will also be
used, where significant, to identify family, trade and historical influences in the
purchase and development of Pool Plat , which was about to undergo a dramatic
transformation. However, it was not just Flixton Village which was undergoing an
economic transformation at the hands of the Royles. On the east side of St. Michael’s
churchyard is a headstone which reads,
“In loving memory of Thomas the beloved husband of Susan Royle who passed on
April 3 rd 1935 aged 75 years also of Susan his beloved wife who passed on Dec. 22 nd
1945 aged 84 years also of James eldest son of the above who died Nov. 20 th 1947 aged
59 years also of Alfred (Fred) second son of the above Thomas and Susan Royle who
died Feby. 28 th 1950 aged 58 years also of Thomas Edgar youngest son of the above
