The Role of William and John Henry Royle in the

In ‘Part One’ of this article I discussed and analysed the lives of William and John
Henry Royle and put them into a genealogical and business context, with a discussion
of the census returns of 1861 to 1911. In ‘Part Two’ I will continue with a discussion of
the census returns of 1851 and 1841 and the possible geographical location of the
family in this era, as well as their family links to the Booths at Holly Bank. The
memorial inscriptions of John, Job and Matthew Royle will also be analysed in more
detail in order to show their extended trade and family links. The memorial inscriptions
in the old section of the churchyard, at St. Michael’s Parish Church, Flixton, reveal rich
detail of the Royles and their family and business - related contemporaries. The
gravestones in this section, mainly on the north side, have all been laid flat. This is
presumably for safety reasons, as many of the headstones of this era are large, heavy
and prone to subsidence. However, the process of lying them flat, in many cases, has
led to further subsidence and encroachment of the surrounding grass and soil. Together
with annual ingress of leaf and branch litter, many have already been lost to the view of
