<strong>The</strong> Role <strong>of</strong> <strong>William</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>John</strong> <strong>Henry</strong> <strong>Royle</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Development</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pool Plat, Flixton. Part Two.<br />
<strong>The</strong> memorial <strong>in</strong>scription <strong>of</strong> James Booth at Holly Bank; <strong>The</strong> 1851<br />
<strong>and</strong> 1841 Censuses; <strong>The</strong> memorial <strong>in</strong>scriptions <strong>of</strong> <strong>John</strong> <strong>and</strong> Job <strong>Royle</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> Flixton; A prelim<strong>in</strong>ary pedigree for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Royle</strong>s; <strong>The</strong> memorial<br />
<strong>in</strong>scription <strong>of</strong> Mat<strong>the</strong>w <strong>Royle</strong> <strong>of</strong> Manchester.<br />
In ‘Part One’ <strong>of</strong> this article I discussed <strong>and</strong> analysed <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong> <strong>William</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>John</strong><br />
<strong>Henry</strong> <strong>Royle</strong> <strong>and</strong> put <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to a genealogical <strong>and</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess context, with a discussion<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> census returns <strong>of</strong> 1861 to 1911. In ‘Part Two’ I will cont<strong>in</strong>ue with a discussion <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> census returns <strong>of</strong> 1851 <strong>and</strong> 1841 <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> possible geographical location <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
family <strong>in</strong> this era, as well as <strong>the</strong>ir family l<strong>in</strong>ks to <strong>the</strong> Booths at Holly Bank. <strong>The</strong><br />
memorial <strong>in</strong>scriptions <strong>of</strong> <strong>John</strong>, Job <strong>and</strong> Mat<strong>the</strong>w <strong>Royle</strong> will also be analysed <strong>in</strong> more<br />
detail <strong>in</strong> order to show <strong>the</strong>ir extended trade <strong>and</strong> family l<strong>in</strong>ks. <strong>The</strong> memorial <strong>in</strong>scriptions<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> old section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> churchyard, at St. Michael’s Parish Church, Flixton, reveal rich<br />
detail <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Royle</strong>s <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir family <strong>and</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess - related contemporaries. <strong>The</strong><br />
gravestones <strong>in</strong> this section, ma<strong>in</strong>ly on <strong>the</strong> north side, have all been laid flat. This is<br />
presumably for safety reasons, as many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> headstones <strong>of</strong> this era are large, heavy<br />
<strong>and</strong> prone to subsidence. However, <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> ly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m flat, <strong>in</strong> many cases, has<br />
led to fur<strong>the</strong>r subsidence <strong>and</strong> encroachment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g grass <strong>and</strong> soil. Toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />
with annual <strong>in</strong>gress <strong>of</strong> leaf <strong>and</strong> branch litter, many have already been lost to <strong>the</strong> view <strong>of</strong><br />
