Haslemere Road. <strong>The</strong> Papers also conta<strong>in</strong> a Copy Draft Conveyance, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1 st<br />

November 1878 (E/SHAW/5/55) between Messrs. Whitehead <strong>and</strong> Barlow <strong>and</strong> <strong>William</strong><br />

Flitcr<strong>of</strong>t, relat<strong>in</strong>g to a plot <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> Flixton known as Tree Hey. This document places<br />

Tree Hey <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shaw (sic) area <strong>of</strong> Flixton, with <strong>the</strong> marriage <strong>of</strong> <strong>John</strong> <strong>Royle</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

Elizabeth Shawcross potentially expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> long term connection between <strong>the</strong><br />

families <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> eventual appearance <strong>of</strong> Tree Hey amongst deeds <strong>and</strong> documents<br />

perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Royle</strong>s <strong>and</strong> dated 23 rd September 1952 (E/18/61)<br />

It becomes apparent that once we beg<strong>in</strong> to look at <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pool Plat area,<br />

<strong>the</strong> families <strong>in</strong>volved with its sale <strong>and</strong> purchase <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> extended connections to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Royle</strong>s, we can see that a vast social network has been created. This does not affect just<br />

Flixton but <strong>in</strong>fluences <strong>the</strong> family <strong>in</strong>to Urmston <strong>and</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r east still <strong>in</strong>to Stretford, at<br />

Hole House Farm, Urmston Lane, Lostock, <strong>and</strong> K<strong>in</strong>g Street, Stretford. It is noticeable<br />

that <strong>the</strong> occupations <strong>of</strong> farm<strong>in</strong>g, trade <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong> ownership <strong>and</strong> conveyance are very<br />

skilfully comb<strong>in</strong>ed. This comb<strong>in</strong>ation has led to <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong> a very <strong>in</strong>fluential<br />

family, which up until <strong>the</strong> latter quarter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 20 th century ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed a major<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence upon <strong>the</strong> district. <strong>The</strong> added occupation <strong>of</strong> property development, particularly<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1930s, helped to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> this <strong>in</strong>fluence. ‘Part Six’ <strong>of</strong> this article will fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> deal<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Royle</strong>s <strong>in</strong> relation to Pool Plat <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir bus<strong>in</strong>ess partners<br />

<strong>and</strong> look at some fur<strong>the</strong>r suggested family l<strong>in</strong>ks, which will provide us with yet more<br />

examples <strong>of</strong> how closely <strong>in</strong>tegrated was Flixton Village with its farm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> trade<br />

community.<br />
