48 granddaughter, Mrs. Anne Jones. Robert Langton was born 1825, in Gravesend, Kent to David Elland Langton, butcher and Mary Payne. Robert trained as an engraver and moved to Salford, where he is living at the time of his marriage to Harriette Charity, the daughter of Mason Charity, a baker, on the 14 th September 1850, at Oakham Parish Church, Rutland. David Herbert Langton was born at 110 Dorset Street, Hulme, on the 5 th December 1858. By 1891 Robert, aged 65 is living at 7 Lodge Avenue, Urmston, retiring in 1893 to Church Cottage, Bexley, Kent, where he died on the 13 th September 1900, aged 75. He is interred at Woking. During his life he engraved blocks for many of the important works published in Manchester and the north of England, including Ormerod’s ‘Cheshire,’ Watkin’s ‘Roman Lancashire’ and ‘Roman Cheshire’ and Dr. Heginbotham’s ‘History of Stockport,’ to name only a few. Robert was also interested in antiquarian and literary matters. He became a member of the Manchester Literary Club (MLC) in 1877, with its headquarters at the ‘Mitre,’ and was one of its presidents for four years. He was also a member of the Council of the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society (LCAS) from its foundation in 1883. He contributed several important papers to both societies, twelve items in all to the MLC, including engravings and his memorial notice and three to the LCAS. Most notable were ‘The Brothers Cheeryble and the Grant Brothers’ (MLC Transactions. Vol. 12 - Manchester Quarterly Vol. 5 - 1886 pp. 8, 398) and ‘Charles Dickens and Rochester’ (MLC Transactions. Vol. 6. 1880 pp. 148 - 167) to the MLC and ‘ Notes on Church Restoration,’ (LCAS Transactions. Vol. IV. 1886 pp. 50 - 61) and ‘An Obscure Funeral Custom,’ (LCAS Transactions. Vol. VI. 1888 pp. 58 - 67) to the LCAS. He became an Associate of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 1882. He also contributed a large number of essays, articles and sketches to the Manchester City News, including ‘The Disposal of the Dead.’ His best known work is ‘The Childhood and Youth of Charles Dickens,’ published in 1883 and illustrated by 76 of his own sketches and engravings. Therefore, it is not difficult to recognise David Herbert’s early influences. Despite the weaver’s reference in Harriette Langton’s Browning quotation, the villagers of Flixton also valued their ownership of land in the early to mid - 19 th century, with the larger and wealthier landowners reaping the rewards post enclosure and urbanisation, as discussed in ‘Part Six.’ William and John Henry Royle were a part of this entrepreneurial success. With Anne Heywood’s final application of 22 nd December 1910 road widening and bridge building operations at Carrington Road were now complete and William and John Henry Royle could claim their financial and property heritage, whilst leaving their monument to future generations of Flixton owner/occupiers.
