Whittaker, was born <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> March quarter <strong>of</strong> 1916 <strong>and</strong> registered at Barton - Upon -<br />

Irwell. It is apparent from <strong>the</strong> Whittakers’ l<strong>and</strong> deal<strong>in</strong>gs that it was commonplace for<br />

trades people like <strong>the</strong>m <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Royle</strong>s to do bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong> conveyance,<br />

although admittedly on a relatively small scale.<br />

<strong>The</strong> agreement between <strong>William</strong> <strong>Royle</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Whittakers was an important<br />

development regard<strong>in</strong>g access to Pool Plat <strong>and</strong> adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g l<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> later<br />

developments <strong>of</strong> this stretch <strong>of</strong> Carr<strong>in</strong>gton Road, as <strong>the</strong> bridge was <strong>the</strong> only real access<br />

to both Pool Plat <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Whatcr<strong>of</strong>t. Its removal was <strong>the</strong> precursor for a total<br />

overhaul <strong>of</strong> this stretch <strong>of</strong> Carr<strong>in</strong>gton Road, especially now that <strong>the</strong> flood prevention<br />

measures pre - 1894 had undergone modification <strong>and</strong> improvement. Flood sluices<br />

collected ra<strong>in</strong>fall from a watershed <strong>of</strong> 500, 000 acres, formed by <strong>the</strong> bas<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Rivers Irwell <strong>and</strong> Mersey (Farnie. 1980 p. 87) <strong>and</strong> at Carr<strong>in</strong>gton Road <strong>the</strong>re was a<br />

floodgate lead<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> River Mersey <strong>in</strong>to a channel, which would dra<strong>in</strong> away any<br />

excessive amounts <strong>of</strong> water dur<strong>in</strong>g times <strong>of</strong> potential flood<strong>in</strong>g. This area <strong>of</strong> Carr<strong>in</strong>gton<br />

Road <strong>and</strong> Church Road fur<strong>the</strong>r east, as stated by Donald W. Lee <strong>in</strong> <strong>The</strong> Flixton<br />

Footpath Battle (1976 pp. 8 - 9) was prone to such flood<strong>in</strong>g, particularly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter<br />

months. However, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Manchester Ship Canal <strong>in</strong> 1894 <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

dra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> River Mersey, via a weir, <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> canal at <strong>the</strong> Irlam <strong>and</strong> Cadishead<br />

railway viaducts where <strong>the</strong>y crossed, <strong>the</strong> potential for flood<strong>in</strong>g was much dim<strong>in</strong>ished,<br />

hence <strong>the</strong> agreement <strong>of</strong> 25 th November 1897 to remove <strong>the</strong> bridge for road widen<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> development.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se agreements cont<strong>in</strong>ued with more l<strong>and</strong> purchases from <strong>the</strong> 26 th August to <strong>the</strong><br />

2 nd September 1908 <strong>and</strong> an agreement between Barton - Upon - Irwell RDC, <strong>William</strong>
