Juan-Manual Alonso
Journey in the Subconscious
Long silver hair flowing, Juan-Manuel Alonso is a popular runaway
model, known to get the attention of everyone in the audience. At the
height of his modeling career, Juan-Manuel traveled and worked for
fashion houses through out the world. After leaving full time modeling,
he turned to the business world. He worked with fashion and design
houses from Tiffany to WilliWear. The corporate world held little sway
over him and soon Juan-Manuel embarked on his life’s passion, art.
Juan-Manuel came to Palm Springs in 2008 following the transition of
his parents. “I drove from
Miami to Palm Springs
searching for a quiet place
to paint. Once here I found
beauty and artistic freedom
that I had not experienced”,
continued Juan-Manuel.
This Cuban born, New York
educated, world citizen
sees his surroundings,
interprets them through
his subconscious and
translates that passion on to
canvas. Bold colors, surreal,
mystical and symbolic, the
works are commentary on
the physical and the metaphysical
worlds he straddles.
“I want the viewer’s eye to
go on a road trip, guided
by my hand. I want the
viewer to observe my work
as if he or she traveled into
the subconscious space. I
want the viewer to release
and allow their eye to travel
around the canvas. There
is much to be taken in with
my work. It is the journey my
viewer takes with me”, said
Juan –Manuel.
“I pluck ideas for my work
as if they were wild flowers”
said Juan-Manuel. “What
I see is arranged in my
imagination and categorized,
not by monetary value but
the intrinsic value that makes
the object beautiful.” For
him, inspiration comes from
everywhere: the flowers of
North Africa, the Art Deco
architecture of Miami’s South
Beach, the Kasbahs of the
Middle East, the mid-century
lifestyle of Palm Springs. His
passion comes from deep
inside his soul.
These days, with Nynja,
his Xoloitzcuintli, an exotic
Mexican hairless dog, Juan-Manuel lives his life to create his art.
Wherever he may travel it is to Palm Springs that he returns. His work
resides in private and public collection around the world. Locally, Gallery
446, in Palm Springs, represents him. Juan-Manuel’s work “Am Still
Here” was selected for the Palm Springs Art Museum Artist Council
Exhibition. When not painting, Juan-Manual is an art- mentor to local
high school students. He also volunteers with Desert AIDS Project.
What is next for Juan-Manuel? “I will never stop being an Artist. I see
beauty all around. Where my work will go, is only limited by the viewers’
imagination.”
