Performing Recalcitrance
24–30 mars/March 2012
Kungl. Konsthögskolan/Royal Institute of Art
Öppet program/Public programme
Välkommen till Performing Recalcitrance,
ett veckolångt program som är öppet för
allmänheten och som äger rum på Kungl.
Konsthögskolan i Stockholm 24–30 mars 2012
Medlemmarna
Filmskaparen Eyal
i Ramallah, berättar om sitt projekt ”Picasso in Palestine”,
ades i Palestina.
produktion av liveradioprogram, som inte ska vara pratradio;
ingen journalistik, inga dokumentärer, inget fylla ut
tiden med kunskap (verklig eller antagen). Ett antal work-
shops, performance, föreläsningar, en boklansering, filmvisningar
och en avslutande paneldiskussion rundar av
programmet.
Performing Recalcitrance är organiserat av Olav Westphalen
och Stefanie Hessler vid Kungl. Konsthögskolan i samarbete
med Goethe-Institut Stockholm, Index – The Swedish
Contemporary Art Foundation, Konst-ig, Kultur-
huset, Moderna Museet och Dans och Cirkushögskolan
(DOCH) i Stockholm.
Welcome to Performing Recalcitrance,
a week-long public programme taking place
at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm
between March 24 and March 30, 2012
Performing recalcitrance comprises performances,
lectures and workshops. It is a symposium, festival and
meeting point for discussion. It serves as the public culmi-
nation of a thematic cluster of courses and academic events
around recalcitrance, which are being held throughout the
academic year at the Royal Institute of Art.
While “resistance” and “revolt” are commonly employed
as positive terms, “recalcitrance” has overwhelmingly
negative connotations. The current definition of the word
“recalcitrance” dates back to the 17th century (Fr. récal-
citrant, lit. “kicking back,” 17c.–18c.). It describes a stub-
born, obstinate, at times even passive-aggressive or lazy
attitude. Nevertheless, it seems to be an appropriate de-
scription of the nature of certain current social and political
confrontations. This programme explores the role of
obstinate refusal in contemporary art and society, including
the academic setting. It asks whether, under certain
circumstances, recalcitrance could be a meaningful attitude
and whether the performance of recalcitrance can
be a useful artistic and social tool.
Performing Recalcitrance highlights a range of artistic prac-
tices through works produced for the programme as well
as in talks and workshops. The members of the Berlin-based
artist’s group Maiden Monsters have decide to withdraw
from any protest movement and stay in bed. They invite
us to a private encounter with art history and the women’s
rights movements, but only after having undergone an ini-
tiation ritual. Israeli artist Omer Krieger of Public Movement
stages a collective performance, scrutinizing codes
of conduct, legislative texts and the aesthetics of protest
movements in the Swedish context. Klas Eriksson sets
up a temporary, unauthorized McDonald’s branch on the
museum island Skeppsholmen in Central Stockholm, turning
the logic of the standardized and optimized production
line inside out. Michael Smith will speak about his role as
an American recalcitrant addressing mainstream popular
culture, such as sit-coms and TV commercials over the last
three decades. Filmmaker Eyal Sivan will show a selection
of his films and comment on his work, a critique of nationalism
and the politics of memory. Khaled Hourani, artist
and founder of the art academy in Ramallah, will speak
about his project “Picasso in Palestine”, which brought a
“Modernist masterpiece” to Palestine for the first time.
Valeria Graziano discusses the role of procrastination in
a culture of entrepreneurship, constantly inducing us to
produce value. Geert Lovink will focus on the role of recal-
citrance in online media and speak about debate and ano-
nymity on the net. Donatella Bernardi’s students will run
TV Mejan, a continuous, fully operational web TV studio,
while Mårten Spångberg and Olav Westphalen will organ-
ize “Non Talk Radio,” an intense , 24 hours-a-day, sleep-
over workshop producing live-radio programmes, which
cannot be talk radio; no journalism, no documentary, no
filling time with knowledge (real or presumed). A number
of further workshops, performances, lectures, a book
launch, film screenings and a final panel discussion will
round off the programme.
Performing Recalcitrance has been conceptualized and
programmed by Olav Westphalen and Stefanie Hessler.
The public programme has been organized by the Royal
Institute of Art in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut
Stockholm, Iaspis, Index – The Swedish Contemporary Art
Foundation, Konst-ig, Kulturhuset, Moderna Museet and
DOCH, the University of Dance and Circus in Stockholm.
We look forward to an intensive week and invite you to
participate in Performing Recalcitrance.
TV Mejan
dokumenterar Performing Recalcitrance, och besökare bjuds
in att delta och interagera.
Kulturhuset, plan 5
besökare deltar i performancen.
komma in i rummet när sessionen pågår.
Patienterna
Why are artists interested in TV, why do they sometimes work
with this medium and how can an art school communicate
through a home made TV channel? On the basis of historical
examples and special guests who will incarnate them, as well
as actual “television” practitioners, this course aims to concur-
rently teach technical, philosophical and artistic skills to the
students in order to create TV Mejan and its programme. TV
Mejan will document all of Performing Recalcitrance, and
visitors are invited to take part and interact.
In a room separated from the exhibition space, only a door sign
indicates the private process happening within that space.
A certain number of visitors are taking part in the performance.
Each “patient” is given a personal time schedule to attend his/
her individual session over a defined period. Each session is of
one hour’s length. The dialogue between artist and visitor in
form of an analytical-therapeutic counseling session positions
both, artist/therapist and visitor/patient in a double role, and
the session itself is reciprocal, too. The room in which the
performance takes place is shielded: no recordings, visitors
stay anonymous, professional discretion of the therapist, and
the space may not be entered by others during the time of the
session. The performance is understood as art project and thus
confounds the borders and rules of an art institution. Patients
are recruited through announcements and the art context of the
counseling session is clarified. However, the museum visitors’
expectations of experiencing a performance clash with the
sealing of the space and a private consultation hour in an art
institution. They do not gain clarity whether the performance/
counseling session is “true” or not.
non-talk-radio (ntr)
an extended situation for up to 20 bodies
nonstop workshop: 24.3, 10 am–27.3, 10 pm
the royal institute of art, Hus 28
NTR is a workshop, an island weekend, a radio clinic. Over the
course of an extended weekend we will spend 24 hours a day
together, working, doing, playing, eating, resting if necessary.
The days will be structured as intense production days.
For each day we will identify specific problems, questions or
challenges to address by whatever method, material, position,
action we find appropriate or at least amusing.
One stipulation: we have to produce a live radio program
every night and it cannot be talk radio; no journalism, no documentary,
no filling time with knowledge (real or presumed).
A central aspect of NTR is to imagine and research the per-
formative aspects of radio, both, in the sense of the monarchy of
speech interrupted by music present in contemporary radio, and
to use radio as a specific interface ready to question and contest
conventional models of permance, liveness, participation etc.
What is the choreographic potentiality implied in radio?
Can we produce dance radio? Nude radio? Sex radio, radio
drawings, without talking …
A further interest is to negotiate and articulate relations
between production and perception. Where is the listener or
viewer, the perceiver or participant in respect of radio, and can
that or those positions offer us awareness of how artistic practices
consider reception.
The situation will be loosely pre-structured by Mårten
Spångberg and Olav Westphalen, but it has the potential to
develop in whatever direction. The physical workshop and
hub for NTR will be in Hus 28, a small, freestanding structure
on the island Skeppsholmen in Central Stockholm, which
usually serves as a seminar room for the Royal Institute of Art.
To be part of NTR you should contact us at:
olav.westphalen@kkh.se with a short statement. Why do you
think this is for you? And why are you for this?
March 24, 10 am, through March 27, 10 pm.
The workshop is a collaboration between the Royal Institute
of Art and DOCH the University of Dance and Circus.
A seminar and workshop, utilizing a number of texts as an
impetus for a creative experiment in material thinking. The
chosen texts individually relate to the elements of the workshop
title and will be discussed in an informal seminar setting. Follow-
ing this, the group will work with clay – and at which time
recitations of extracts will be read aloud – with the cumulative
intention to create responses, reactions or articulations of the
texts and/or the discontinuities between them.
Readings include: Samuel Beckett, Kazimir Malevich,
Mladen Stilinovic, Herman Tennessen, Voltaire, The Kalevala
epos.
självständiga utbildningar integreras i akademien. Presentationen
filmvisning: 27.3, 16.00–18.00
moderna museet, Biografen
”The Power of Emotion”, ”Germany in Autumn” och ”Artists
röst i förgrunden vilket resulterat i legendariska konversationer
med personer som Heiner Müller, Einar Schleef och H.M.
Enzensberger.
Contemporary Art Foundation.
Programmet har organiserats i samarbete med Goethe-
Institut i Stockholm.
examen i juridik 1956. Han blev juridisk rådgivare vid Frankfurt
Institute for Social Research och nära medarbetare till T.W. Adorno.
av DCTP (Development Company for Television Programme),
participants, in speech and video projection. The city/police
permissions for the action will be read, academy codex, traffic
laws, constitutional clauses regarding the parliament in Sweden.
The group will leave the academy building and start walking
to the parliament. On the way 4–6 short stops will be conducted
in several points on the way, for different demonstrations/collective
actions/situations.
The walk will end in front of Riksdagen/The Swedish
Parliament, to which the public’s access will be granted (with
There is no consensus today about what artistic R&D is, or
should be. Here we find both knowledge production in a fairly
precise (and academic) sense and, more openly determined in-
depth enhancement of specialist expertise of an essentially artis-
tic kind. There is an ongoing battle between these contradictory
perceptions that is particularly interesting to investigate
as an example of the struggle that occurs when the relatively
autonomous educations of the professions are integrated in the
academy. The presentation will comment on this dilemma,
and the status of artistic autonomy in an academic framework.
moderna museet, Biografen
The filmmaker, author, philosopher, cultural theorist, and
media politician Alexander Kluge is one of the most idiosyn-
cratic and prolific figures in German cinema and television.
Alongside his work as a director of such influential films as
“The Power of Emotion”, “Germany in Autumn” and “Artists
Under the Big Top: Perplexed“, he has been a singular
force in the debate around public and private Television in
Germany for the past 20 years. Since 1988, he has produced
more than 1500 hours of radically independent cultural pro
gramming for private broadcasting companies, thus keeping
television open to what happens outside the commercial markets.
Conducive digression and discourse are characteristic
of his interview technique. In his dialogues about books,
films and art the author’s voice is foregrounded, resulting in
legendary conversations with interlocutors such as Heiner
Müller, Einar Schleef or H.M. Enzensberger. In his magazine
without words, in his city and music reports, and in formats
such as “Facts & Fakes,” Kluge explores, stubbornly and with-
out any concern for rating figures, what television can possibly
communicate. For Performing Recalcitrance, a selection of
Kluge’s productions for television will be introduced and
discussed by Diana Baldon, director of Index – The Swedish
Contemporary Art Foundation .
The program has been organized in collaboration with the
Goethe-Institut Stockholm.
alexanDer Kluge was born in 1932 in Halberstadt and received
his doctor’s degree in Law in 1956. He became juridical adviser of
the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research and a confidant to T.W.
Adorno. Since the 1960s, Kluge became well known as author and
filmmaker. In 1962, he published the “Oberhausen Manifesto”
together with 25 young filmmakers, which became the forerunner
of New German Cinema. Since 1988, Kluge has been active in
German private television as reaction to the termination of funds
for independent filmmaking by the government. With the foundation
of his dctp (Development Company for Television Programme),
he created a platform for an independent programme within private
German television in order to assert uncommercial screenings and a
pluralistic broadness.
Presentation av boken notes towards a critique of money
föreläsning: 28.3, 14.00–15.30
Kungl. Konsthögskolan, föreläsningssalen, plan 4
Analysen i Notes Towards a Critique of Money belyser pengarnas
Notes
analys.
Boken innehåller konstverk av Société Réaliste, Yuko Kamei,
Valentin Rurhy, Kay Walkowiak, Shogo Matsushiro, Axel
Presentation of the book notes towards a critique of money
lecture: 28.3, 14.00–15.30
the royal institute of art, the lecture room, 4th floor
The analysis in Notes Towards a Critique of Money highlights the
functions of money both in the organization of the capitalist sym-
bolic order and in the constitution of subjectivity in the market.
Combining Lacanian psychoanalysis and Baudrillardian
structuralism, the book creates a universe where price and sign
are entangled, giving rise to the dominant organizing form of
capitalism. The fantasmatic management of desire enforces
this structural principle on the subjective level and encourages
the libidinal investment in the dominant representations of
social reality as they are produced by the combined principles
of signification and economic valuation. Here, money signifies
the particular content that hegemonizes the universal ideologi-
cal construction of capitalism providing a particular and accessible
meaning to economic value, which colors the very universality
of the system of prices and accounts for its efficiency.
Being conscious of the limitations of the theoretical analysis,
the book employs along with rational arguments a series
of artworks that are used both to illustrate the argument and
to challenge the unconscious links between the market and
the subject, as it is mediated by money and ideology. Notes
Towards a Critique of Money does not only aspire to raise a theo-
retical challenge against capital and to open up possibilities
of emancipation, but to point towards a new aesthetic of political
analysis.
The book features artworks by Société Réaliste, Yuko
Maitre, Valentin Rurhy, Kay Walkowiak, Shogo Matsushiro,
edited by Donatella Bernardi and noémie etienne
Book launch: 28.3, 18.00 at Konst-ig
A set of contributions (archive texts, essays, literary texts,
iconographic analysis, art works, interviews …) by over thirty
authors, scholars, writers, journalists, artists, Westerners,
Middle Easterners, Jews, Muslims, Christians, atheists, to
explore the complexities of contemporary Middle Eastern
reality.
How can one invest a present that seems to sputter? One
possible way: to work on the notion of the interval, to reassert
the spaces and the peculiarities so as to reassert the terms of
a dialog with our histories, knowledge and practices. Such are
the stakes of this black & white collective work. Here Jerusalem
appears as the crystallization of the gap between languages,
territories, civilizations, identities, histories and representations.
It addresses a part of our European history.
The book is built around archived texts, essays, literary texts,
iconographic analyses and interviews. Likewise, the iconography
itself is a hybrid.
– cluster course
Programpunkter under Performing recalcitrance:
Under Performing Recal-
As indebted students, precarious workers, quasi-illegal migrants,
creative subjects, we are constantly on call, environmentally
enticed to produce value and values, even or perhaps especially
when we are not at work. In this mashed time of ours, procrasti-
nation is being recast as a social disease, as the ultimate sin to
combat through a variety of techniques of puritan flavour. Task-
avoidance strategies and self-regulatory failures express a kind
of executive suffering, given that the master clock is on our wrist.
But in the wild safari of practices for loosing time, what is our
Valeria graziano is a researcher, educator and organiser. Cur-
Performing Recalcitrance
Man vet vad
Verbet recalcitrate ”att sparka ut” finns belagt sedan 1620-talet;
i somras men följde dem fascinerad.
att släppas in i VIP-loungen.
Ofta pratar man
rebellen i sitt hus eller i sin tillflyktsort, ofta med sina släktingar;
dess hus och gator i dina mest avlägsna och hemliga minnen;
linjära tänkandet i bakgrunden.
Performing Recalcitrance
An emailed conversation between
Valeria Graziano and Olav Westphalen
Vg: You invited me to contribute to this academic program at
the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, titled “Performing
Recalcitrance.” I am curious to hear how you came to think
of recalcitrance as a topic.
oW: We were quite broadly thinking about artistic practices that
might yield social or critical potential without being illustrative,
moralizing or plain conventional. The term recalcitrance
seemed at the same time more fitting and less worn-out than
the more immediately obvious term resistance. Resistance is
usually a response to a clearly perceived attack. You know what
you are resisting against. Recalcitrance doesn’t require that level
of awareness. It can be a vague attitude. What I find especially
interesting about recalcitrance is its connotation of stubborn
incorrigibility, of poor response to therapy and education. In
an academic setting this is a challenging proposition. Since the
60s every single generation of teachers has been complaining
about their students’ lack of engagement and criticality. I got
to hear it from my teachers in the 80s and 90s and today’s students
get to hear it from us. Instead of lamenting, once again,
a lack of political activism, we thought let’s look at recalcitrance,
passive-aggressive, mean-spirited and lazy as it may be, and
see if it isn’t a genuine response to the conditions of the academy,
the art world, our lives - and if it could be a useful tool.
Vg: I have been looking at the ethymos of recalcitrance: 1823,
from Fr. récalcitrant, lit. “kicking back” (17c.-18c.), pp. of recalci-
trare “to kick back,” from re- “back” + L. calcitrare “to kick,” from
calx (gen. calcis) “heel.” Used from 1797 as a French word in English.
Verb recalcitrate “to kick out” is attested from 1620s; sense of “resist
obstinately” is from 1759.
This made me think of the horse or the mule whose only
option is to kick back towards his conductor, often missing
the target. Hence, perhaps recalcitrance can be imagined as
containing more potential than a ‘lazy practice’ or a practice
of ‘passive aggressive resistance’. The kick could miss the target
and result in an ineffective or even counterproductive action,
but the act in itself is very energetic and full of potential! So
recalcitrance could be imagined as an affective motor of differ-
ent forms of refusal, an impulse that can take on different
strategies (resistance, revolt, insurrection, passive-aggression,
etc.). It seems to address an instinctive act of refusal (although
I am not sure about ‘instincts’ in mankind …), a conatus, an
affect that comes out from our animal condition, before the
refusal passes from being emotion to becoming a position that
has its own morals or ethics. So, one thing that sounds interest-
ing to me is to reflect a bit more around recalcitrance as a particular
state of the body, bundle of emotions, positions that can
result in a kick in the air or a kick that smashes through the
fence! Now, this take begs questions regarding the target of
the kick and the nature of the relationship between the horse
and the conductor.
oW: I like the image of the kicking mule. But I am not sure
that kicking back necessarily needs to be kicking backwards.
Couldn’t it just be a kick in reaction to whatever, be it forward
or backwards, sideways, upwards? One expression that comes
to mind, and it may even be a slightly skewed application of
the term, is the German word “Nachtreten.” It’s a sports term
that implies an unfair and cowardish, unsuspected kick usually
in response to an earlier frustration or attack. So, it comes from
a position of perceived victimhood, it’s basically a weak revenge.
It can describe a player attacking unfairly from behind when
the ball isn’t even anywhere near. Now, in most cases Nacht-
reten isn’t a very well thought-out course of action and not
productive either, because it is punished severely. But there
is still a minute probability that it might go unpunished and
somehow change the outcome of the contest.
Generally speaking, I agree that there are two connotative
tendencies to “Recalcitrance:” the more obstinate, stubborn
aspect and the impulsive, explosive aspect. What they both
seem to have in common is that they are reactive and aren’t
contingent on a position or awareness. Both types of recalcitrance
seem to go along with inferiority and powerlessness,
whether real or imagined.
Another interesting aspect is this: actions that would be
defined as acts of resistance by the actors, could probably be
called recalcitrant behavior by those they are targeting. So there
is a directional quality to the term - it tends to be applied down-
ward in terms of power - and there’s an implied speaker: someone
in the position of power.
Vg: I have been toying with the idea of recalcitrance being a kick
inwards, but more about that in a sec. I have not been in London
these days, but followed what has been happening there with
fascination. It strikes me how the UK seem to be a place where
often conflict takes the form of a revolt (or insurrection in Bifo’s
terminology), and this can happen so quickly and forcefully,
much more so then the speed and intensity of other forms of
conflict, such as organised protests, strikes or occupations (such
as the recent Spanish acampadas that we witnessed in Madrid,
or the Occupy Wall Street movement in the US). I read various
commentaries to what has been happening, and a lot of them
involved some sort of rhetorical appeal to the distinction revolu-
tion/revolt, understandably. The issue is often that the insurgents
are not easily talked about in terms of self-possessed,
rational subjects, aware of the implications of their own actions.
I read the word ‘politicization’ a number of times. This debate
makes sense, but I suspect speaks more about the imaginary
of those who write and organize politics rather than of the
imaginary of the larger group of those affected by Politics. For
me, to make use of the idea of ‘politicization’ is increasingly
suspicious. It seems to imply that the subject capable of political
action is a subject who is individual, in the sense that he
knows and possesses himself, is rational, knowledgeable – in
a word, modern. Much feminism and postcolonial theory has
been warning about the implications of this imagined subject
of politics for a long time, but perhaps the point has not been
processed by a large part of critical thinkers and doers.
And so I went back to the idea of recalcitrance to think
through this. If we understand this term, as you suggest, to
describe those forms of conflict that are “passive-aggressive,
mean-spirited and lazy”, involving an “obstinate, stubborn aspect
or an impulsive, explosive aspect” as they “go along with
inferiority, powerlessness, whether real or imagined”, then recal-
citrance can be read as a useful cousin of revolt.
Revolt is the reaction to the form of power that Foucault
described as discipline. Discipline shapes forms of life through
giving orders through hierarchical chains, establishing norms
and procedures, delivering punishments. What revolt wants
then is to break the machineries, interrupt the flows (logistical,
communicational) and fight back or flee from punishment.
Recalcitrance on the other hand is the reaction to the form of
power that Foucault describes as government. Government
shapes forms of life through the management and pre-formatting
of the possibilities of freedom. Government does not say ‘you
must’ but ‘ you may’. It offers opportunities for desire and individuation,
but the price to pay is to conform to certain given
pre-requisites and characteristics. And if you don’t comply, it
does not punish you, but it simply excludes you. And the point
is that you are always going to be somewhat excluded, somehow
not fit enough for gaining entrance into the VIP-Lounge. Even
if you get in there, you may be asked to leave the party at any
minute. What recalcitrance wants then is to subtract itself from
these pre-formatted paths of freedom that always come with
a set of appropriate manners to the occasion. And this is a
dangerous game, as much as the gesture of revolt. Revolt could
lead to physical harm and imprisonment, while recalcitrance
may lead to rejection, depression and exclusion. The danger is
to implode rather than explode, to fail to reconfigure oneself
successfully and become an outsider (in the un-cool way), to
be denied access to sociability. Often the attempts to refuse
self-management are talked about as if they were a preparatory
phase for some bigger, more valuable gesture. Let me give you
an example. In a recent article Alberto Toscano quoted a passage
by Furio Jesi:
“Until a moment before the clash […] the potential rebel lives
in his house or his refuge, often with his relatives; and as much
as that residence and that environment may be provisional,
precarious, conditioned by the imminent revolt, until the revolt
begins they are the site of an individual battle, more or less solitary.
[…] You can love a city, you can recognize its houses and its
streets in your most remote and secret memories; but only in
the hour of revolt is the city really felt like an haut-lieu [a high
place] and at the same time your own city: your own because
it belongs to you but at the same time also to others; your own
because it is a battlefield you and the collectivity have chosen;
your own, because it is a circumscribed space in which historical
time is suspended and in which every act has its own value,
in its immediate consequences.” (Furio Jesi, Lettura del “Bateau
ivre” di Rimbaud (1972), Macerata: Quodlibet, 1996, p. 23–4.
The italics are mine).
See how the point of the passage is to single out the merits
of revolt against the limits of the solitary individual battle of
a frustrated singularity sitting at home, brooding over the misery
of her condition. However, the mental image of recalcitrance
as culminating, or being redeemed by, revolt is truly a still from
a linear time flow that should lead to a linear revolution. And
maybe in this respect the looters in the UK have come up with
a compelling political practice that configures revolution more
like a swarm that short-circuits all the rituals of a collectivized
collectivity (the assembly, the vote …) to get what it wants and
sabotage the cogs of the metropolis.
Under this perspective, it does not make sense to speak of
a ‘lack of politics’ of the recent riots in the UK. After Guattari,
we may think of it as an instance of the reinscription of politics
onto a new surface, as an expression of the social along a new
configuration of forces that includes recalcitrance as an impulse
of resistance to “therapy and education” as you say, but also
to numerous other devices out there that are deployed for the
preprogramming of existence. This is important also to readdress
the bias and fascination of artists and academics alike
towards the ‘society of control’ as being somehow something
that replaced other kinds of power, such as discipline and punishment.
Again, linear thinking is lurking in the background.
Instead, it appears useful to think of them as two ingredients
of contemporary powers, each with its own logistical and tactical
systems.
The failure of revolt is the moment when it has to confront
government (the rioters who loot desirable, branded goods);
the failure of recalcitrance is notoriously the moment when it
has to confront discipline.
regeringsmaktens manifestationer (Ralph Lauren-butiker etc.).
oW: One more thought about London: you seem to read the riots
as a case of resistance that happened to be (mis)directed against
the manifestations of government (Ralph Lauren stores etc.).
I think one could just as well interpret it as a moment of recal-
citrant reaction, striking out intuitively against what creates the
most palpable discomfort; and this with some success. I think
it was surprising to see how these rarefied commodities instan-
taneously became “just stuff,” devoid of all status and aura,
the moment they were lugged outside in bundles and through
broken shop windows. I think these images might have been
more effective and powerful than the media commentary would
suggest. After a significant delay, caused possibly by sheer surprise
or perhaps by some tactical calculation on the side of the
state, this recalcitrant outburst was met with the full force of
authoritarian discipline. Which goes along with your observation
that these functions, discipline and government, coexist.
What do you think of this?
Vg: Yes, the protests were met with full force but in fact this full
force revealed once again the weakness of the state function.
Not in the sense that we have less meddling from our governments,
but that their function is confined to sets of tactical,
almost demonstrative interventions that are consequences of
the politics happening elsewhere. My question to you in turn
would be how would you narrate the relation between recalcitrance
and insurrection? Is recalcitrance the new revolt?
oW: In general, I would like to point out that while recalcitrance
and revolt can become aligned into a positive force, more typi-
cally recalcitrance does not become productive and successful.
And therefore it is not a political (or artistic) strategy that any-
body would chose willingly if given more promising and cred-
ible alternatives. But in the absence of alternatives, and only
then, it can become a technique of refusal, a kind of necessary
holding pattern. I think the relationship to Government, which
you outline, is extremely important here. In a situation where
all pre-formatted paths of social existence and individual self-
realization are experienced as pathological or faulty, recalci-
trance means the refusal to gloss over those failings. Not a strong
position, perhaps pathological itself, but still an ethical stance.
I find this aspect of the holding pattern or in other words the
insistence that one is holding out for the articulation of an alternative
to what we are told is “reality,” very important. And
there’s a possibility that the true recalcitrant will wait forever
or decide to step out of society and possibly out of life itself.
At the same time I find it problematic that any stubborn and
romantic idealist can hide behind this attitude as well, some-
one who refuses out of laziness to enter into negotiations with
the mess we call society. That to me is the uninteresting moment
of recalcitrance, when it becomes agreeable, comfortable
and an excuse. And those two aspects are not necessarily easy
to keep apart. They may coexist or fade in and out of another.
So, it might be interesting to think of painful, hard-won recal-
citrance, as opposed to smug, lazy recalcitrance, which is actually
quite a comfortable path.
Vg: Agree, agree, agree. To focus on recalcitrance can make
sense precisely because not to practice it is not an option, but
this does not dispense with the ethics of keeping our hands
stretched out looking for other tools. If the moment of recalci-
trance stops expressing an impulse towards autonomy it begins
to condense into sappy lamentation or contempt.
oW: Yes, but that impulse towards autonomy, as you term it,
might never go beyond a refusal, a profound objection towards
what’s there. I am getting the sense that we both would really
like to find that the final objective of recalcitrance can still be
formulated in positive terms, that it ultimately makes sense.
But isn’t that “normalizing” wish of ours, exactly what recalcitrance
takes aim at? It doesn’t need to make sense, not even in
the very long run. In its most extreme it is a refusal, not just of
concrete disciplinarian orders or societal offers, but a refusal
of the very idea of reason and society. In its extreme it is anti-
social and perhaps even suicidal.
Vg: It would be a ‘normalizing wish’ if we were looking for ways
to put it to work, or in other words to make it ‘make sense’.
However, I take recalcitrance to be a predicament or a state, and
not a substantial attribute or a personal characteristic, and so
I’d still like to ask questions about the conditions that compose
its occurrence. What are you recalcitrating about? With whom?
When and where? How? And what happened next? You know,
the classic questions. If we don’t ask these, and we stop at ack-
nowledging that ‘deep down we did not want to do it but we had
to do it anyway’ – it may become hard to move ourselves, our
thinking and our acting, away from self-verification mode. So,
if the impulse is to act anti-social, what is the anti- about? If it
ends up being about the ‘people’ part, including ourselves in the
group, then yes, suicide or homicide become the extreme options
of your range set. But if the anti- is about the forces and conditions
that shape a specific social ambience that is annoying you, then
something else needs to happen, some things of a different
quality. Of course, in the moment of recalcitrance you cannot
know yet which option your sentiment will follow, you’re just
fed up, angry, sad, and frustrated by your own ambivalence …
oW: Let’s bring these thoughts back, more concretely, to the art
academy. Here, we are planning a program titled “Performing
Recalcitrance” at a school that’s very much a product of the
European Beaux-Arts tradition. So, we are asking, could there
be something useful for us to do with or learn from this largely
unattractive attitude?
And I think the ability to hold out, to refuse following a pre-
established practice or line of argument, even though you can
absolutely not come up with a better alternative, is extremely
interesting for artists to consider. If much of cultural production
today is done with an “it’ll do”-mentality (think of the show-
man mentality with which curators today produce one inter-
national mega-show after the other, or the managerial zeal,
applied to writing study plans, conferences etc.), then the
recalcitrant digs in her heels and say: “No, it won’t do!” And,
she adds: “I have not the slightest idea what would do.”
Vg: This makes me think about the figure of Bartleby, Melville’s
scrivener discussed, by Agamben and Deleuze among many
others, as an allegory of the refusal of power that is also a refusal
of the normative terms for confrontation against that power.
Perhaps the famous sentence ‘I would prefer not to’ evokes recalcitrance
in a peculiar way, as it introduces it as a problem of
predilection and not as a matter of the will (‘ I don’t want to’),
of morality (‘I must’) or capacity (‘I can’). With predilection,
a whole new room for desire is carved out from opposition, but
this would take us yet in a different direction. Returning to art
practices and performing within the academic setting instead,
it seems that you’re suggesting that recalcitrance expresses
a specific mode of researching for new practices and lines of
arguments (which I guess many teachers and researchers have
to do anyhow as part of their job), not simply for the sake of the
new, but as a reaction to specific requirements and predicaments,
would this be a way of thinking of it?
oW: That would be an “enlightened” and productive recuperation
of this ugly attitude. But we can’t know if it will play out
like that. For the moment I am curious about a complete refusal
to make sense or be productive in any traditional sense.
Vg: Among many other things, what both the ‘creative indus-
tries’ moment in policy making and the Bologna process brought
to the art academy is the idea that creativity is a value in as much
as it can be valorised. This of course at times may have felt as a
healthy challenge to the pretence of autonomy of the arts that
transfixed much of the art academy’s pedagogy for a long time.
However this has been a false challenge from the start, because
in fact management appeals to the social accountability of the
arts when the social is equated with profitability, and it resuscitates
an investment into romantic autonomy when it invests
in the uniqueness of the cultural object. This does not mean that
art academies are left with only a cynical perspective in front of
them; but to the contrary, that recalcitrance may be cultivated
as something that these institutions have in common with the
students they try to educate.
On another note, funny coincidence, I am reading a book on
Spinoza and I bumped into another animal metaphor coming
from the Stoics, who used the image of a dog attached to a cart
to illustrate the relation between necessity and freedom. In
some cases the dog will be willing to follow the cart, in others
it will be against doing it, but in the end it will have to go along
because it will be compelled to do so. The Stoics describe the
cart as our needs and the dog as man’s freedom – the ideal con-
dition for happiness then would be when the direction of the
cart and that of the dog coincide. However, even if the end result
will be the same (the dog will have to follow), the way in which
it will do so will look and feel very different. The resistant dog expresses
the unwillingness, it shows it as a vital capacity, what
Spinoza discussed in terms of imagination, which is the basic
awareness of the body to other bodies and to the world. The
dog can imagine that its condition could be different, that it
could be also not going along with the cart. Perhaps also we
recalcitrate when we perceive that life could be different?
oW: Yes, I would say at the root of recalcitrance there lies the
conviction that the status quo is neither right nor inevitable.
So, it is not a stoic attitude.
I think it’s funny that both metaphors are hinging on the cart.
I imagine a mule being whipped on by its driver, dragging the
cart to which the dog is tied by a rope. Does that get us anywhere?
About the mule driver: I was asking myself if we could name
specific targets of recalcitrant behaviour? I started compiling a
list terms that I believe artists specifically are aiming their heels
at: art history, the academy, the market, use value, beauty, skill,
intelligence, meaning, research, community, responsibility.
Vg: As I mentioned before, I think that recalcitrance is directed
towards the handed-down aspects of all these notions when they
become instruments of government. And the difficulty of find-
ing viable strategies of resistance concerns the fact that all of
the terms on the list also express what artists and many others
actually value.
Perhaps it could be also interesting to list the kind of actions
/attitudes that are used against the mule-drivers above, for
instance:
14 15
Ignore
Mock
Lie
Snap
Insult
Overreact
Misunderstand
Misexecute
Forget
Underperform
Overperform
Fail
Cheat
Become bored
Procrastinate
oW: This list would make for an interesting set of instructions
in a performance or choreography. I would like to add these:
whine, manipulate and wear down. And I think it is no coinci-
dence that this list starts to sound somewhat infantile, because
that would be one way to perform a lack of agency in the face
of the all-encompassing functions of government: through
regression.
Vg: yeah, let’s regress …
