The <strong>Flint</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> presented<br />
an active schedule <strong>of</strong> programs and<br />
events for members and <strong>the</strong> general<br />
public throughout <strong>the</strong> year. This<br />
included lectures with distinguished<br />
speakers, Friends <strong>of</strong> Modern Art<br />
art fair, Founders Society art fair,<br />
Founders Society art auction, beer<br />
and wine tastings, a golf outing, and<br />
three community galas. FIA members<br />
received invitations to attend opening<br />
events, which included special<br />
lectures and receptions for temporary<br />

Fore <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arts</strong><br />
August 25, 2008<br />
The 2nd annual cultural collaborative golf outing,<br />
Fore <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arts</strong>, was held at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Flint</strong> Golf Club. More<br />
than 40 sponsors and 90 golfers joined in to help<br />
<strong>Flint</strong>’s cultural institutions raise funds to fulfill<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir missions. The FIA’s partnership with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Flint</strong><br />
<strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> Music, <strong>Flint</strong> Cultural Center Corporation<br />
and its member organizations—<strong>Flint</strong> Youth Theatre,<br />
Longway Planetarium, Sloan Museum and The<br />
Whiting, reached a wider audience by <strong>of</strong>fering<br />
patrons <strong>the</strong> opportunity to support all three<br />
organizations through <strong>the</strong>ir participation.<br />

The 18th Annual Thompson Lecture members-only<br />
event with lecturer Philippe de Montebello, <strong>the</strong><br />
Director and CEO <strong>of</strong> The Metropolitan Museum <strong>of</strong><br />
Art, gave a beautifully illustrated lecture titled The<br />
Hidden Met.<br />
In his lecture, Mr. de Montebello focused on his 40year<br />
experience at <strong>the</strong> Metropolitan Museum, 30 <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>m as its Director, and took <strong>the</strong> audience behind<br />
<strong>the</strong> scenes, revealing untold tales about <strong>the</strong> genesis<br />
<strong>of</strong> various acquisitions as well as <strong>the</strong> unexpected<br />
aspects <strong>of</strong> negotiations involved in <strong>the</strong> organization<br />
<strong>of</strong> international loan exhibitions.<br />
Dr. and Mrs. Jack W. Thompson established <strong>the</strong> Thompson<br />
Lecture in 1991 to enable <strong>the</strong> FIA to present a distinguished<br />
speaker to <strong>the</strong> arts or humanities each year. The Thompson<br />
lecture series is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>’s few membersonly<br />
events and was established, in part, to attract new<br />
members to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Flint</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arts</strong>.<br />
