painted pots, granite tools and other items were
Archaeology Archaeologists have discovered
two Crusader-era murals depicting heaven and
hell in a medieval church on Syria's coast — a
rare find that could reveal new information
about the Christian knights who battled
Muslims for control of the Holy Land hundreds
of years ago. Experts are now renovating the
12 th -century paintings, which were discovered
last year by a joint Syrian-Hungarian team
excavating an old Crusader fortress on a hilltop
overlooking the Mediterranean in the eastern
city of Tartous.
hill of solid rock looms over Aleppo's
old quarter. Fortresses have risen above this
northern Syrian city since Roman times. But at
the heart of the citadel, amid ruins of Ottoman
palaces and hidden behind high walls that date
to the Crusader era, a team of German and
Syrian archaeologists is clearing debris from a
large pit that shows this hilltop was significant
long before the Romans arrived. Here, amid
