meetings, flyers, letters from the Board
of Education, and meeting agendas.
From the Board: Champions Meetings update
Dear Ferndale Schools Community,
It has been an inspiring week for Ferndale Schools. On Tuesday, nearly 90 members of the community
gathered together at the second Champions Meeting of our strategic planning process to hear recommendations
and talk about how to build our district. On Wednesday and Thursday nights, the seniors of Ferndale High School
and University High School graduated and shared their hopes for the future.
We were particularly inspired by our graduates’ choice of class quotation by President Barack Obama: “Change
will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are
the change that we seek.”
The choice speaks to the core of what makes the Ferndale school district so exceptional. We have raised our
students with the understanding that change is a shared responsibility, and we now need your help to understand
our challenges and make the changes.
Two Champions Meetings are over, but there are still two meetings to come and a whole lot of work to follow.
Nobody can do it all, but we can all do something. We invite you to come to the next two meetings, even if you
could not come to the first two, and even if you can only come for some of the time.
Here are the details:
• The next meeting will be on Thursday, June 6
• The final meeting will be on Wednesday, June 19
• Both meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and continue until about 9 p.m.
• Both meetings are at Coolidge Intermediate School, 2521 Bermuda in Ferndale-parking on the
400 block of E. Drayton and E. Oakridge (Click for map)
• Both meetings will provide child care (just call or email Stephanie Hall at 248-586-8651 or
shall@ferndaleschools.org) along with coffee and snacks.
If you want to know what you’ve missed so far, you can find materials online here http://www.ferndaleschools.
org/administration/strategic_plan.html. Videos of the Champions meetings will be on cable Channel 19 on Comcast
and Channel 15 on Wowway, or you can contact us and we will help you get the material. If you have any questions or
comments, please let us know in whatever way is best for you (schoolboard@ferndaleschools.org or 248-586-8652).
We look forward to seeing you next Thursday, June 6. Students, teachers, staff, parents and community
members are all invited to the table to join our conversations as we discuss our future district.
Sincerely,
West Nile Virus Warning
Oakland County Health Division (OCHD), under the leadership
of L. Brooks Patterson, Oakland County Executive, urges residents
to help keep mosquito populations low this season to reduce the
risk of West Nile Virus (WNV) and other mosquito-borne diseases
by taking preventive measures as part of their spring clean-up.
Mosquito eggs can develop into adult mosquitoes in ten days
or less. Residents can reduce the mosquito population and the risk
of WNV through these prevention measures:
• Eliminate mosquito breeding
sites around your home. Empty
standing water from: flower
pots, pet bowls, clogged rain
gutters, swimming pool covers,
old tires, buckets, barrels, cans,
and similar items where mosquitoes
can lay eggs.
• Apply insect repellents that
contain the active ingredient
DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon
West Nile Virus (WNV)
is a mosquito-borne
virus spread to humans
through the bite of a
mosquito that is infected
with WNV after biting
a bird that carries the
virus.
See fact sheet, right >
eucalyptus, or other EPA approved ingredient to exposed skin or
clothing, always following the manufacturer’s directions for use.
• Avoid shaded and wooded areas where mosquitoes may be
present.
• Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and shoes when
outdoors.
• Limit outdoor activity between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes
are most active.
• Maintain window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside.
• Report a sick or dead bird, or mammal, at the State of Michigan
Emerging Disease Issues webpage, www.michigan.gov/emergingdiseases.
Select West Nile Virus, then How to Report a Dead
Bird or Mammal.
For more information, visit the Oakland County Health
Division website at www.oakgov.com/health. You can also get
up-to-date public health information at www.facebook.com/
publichealthOC and www.twitter.com/publichealthOC.
West Nile Virus (WNV) Fact Sheet
What Is West Nile Virus?
West Nile Virus (WNV) is a potentially serious illness.
Experts believe WNV is established as a seasonal epidemic
in North America that flares up in the summer and
continues into the fall. This fact sheet contains important
information that can help you recognize and prevent
West Nile virus.
What Can I Do to Prevent WNV?
The easiest and best way to avoid WNV is to prevent
mosquito bites.
When you are outdoors, use insect repellents
containing an EPA-registered insect repellent.
Follow the directions on the package.
Many mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn.
Be sure to use insect repellent and wear long sleeves
and pants at these times or consider staying indoors
during these hours.
Make sure you have good screens on your windows
and doors to keep mosquitoes out.
Get rid of mosquito breeding sites by emptying
standing water from flower pots, buckets and barrels.
Change the water in pet dishes and replace the water
in bird baths weekly. Drill holes in tire swings so water
drains out. Keep children’s wading pools empty and on
their sides when they aren’t being used.
What Are the Symptoms of WNV?
Serious Symptoms in a Few People. About one in 150
people infected with WNV will develop severe illness.
The severe symptoms can include high fever, headache,
neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors,
convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness
and paralysis. These symptoms may last several weeks,
and neurological effects may be permanent.
Milder Symptoms in Some People. Up to 20 percent
of the people who become infected will display
symptoms which can include fever, headache, and
body aches, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes swollen
lymph glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach and
back. Symptoms can last for as short as a few days, though
even healthy people have been sick for several weeks.
No Symptoms in Most People. Approximately 80
percent of people (about 4 out of 5) who are infected
with WNV will not show any symptoms at all, but there
is no way to know in advance if you will develop an
illness or not.
CS234798-A
National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases
Division of Vector-Borne Diseases
How Does West Nile Virus Spread?
Infected Mosquitoes.
Most often, WNV is spread by the bite of an infected
mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed
on infected birds. Infected mosquitoes can then spread
WNV to humans and other animals when they bite.
Transfusions, Transplants, and Mother-to-Child.
In a very small number of cases, WNV also has been
spread through blood transfusions, organ transplants,
breastfeeding and even during pregnancy from
mother to baby.
Not through touching.
WNV is not spread through casual contact such as
touching or kissing a person with the virus.
How Soon Do Infected People Get Sick?
People typically develop symptoms between 3 and 14
days after they are bitten by the infected mosquito.
How Is WNV Infection Treated?
There is no specific treatment for WNV infection. In cases
with milder symptoms, people experience symptoms
such as fever and aches that pass on their own, although
illness may last weeks to months even in healthy persons.
In more severe cases, people usually need to go to the
hospital where they can receive supportive treatment
including intravenous fluids, help with breathing, and
nursing care.
What Should I Do if I Think I Have WNV?
Milder WNV illness improves on its own, and people
do not necessarily need to seek medical attention
for this infection though they may choose to do so. If
you develop symptoms of severe WNV illness, such as
unusually severe headaches or confusion, seek medical
attention immediately. Severe WNV illness usually requires
hospitalization. Pregnant women and nursing mothers
are encouraged to talk to their doctor if they develop
symptoms that could be WNV.
[Bond Project Update]
FHS Auditorium
overhaul begins
Work on the FHS Auditorium began
this week, as work crews began tearing
apart the area that was originally built in the
1950s. The work is being done with part of
the funds from the 2012 Ferndale Schools
Bond.
The work being done includes: new
stage flooring, updating the heating and
ventilation and ADDING air conditioning,
new stage curtains, painting, new double
door entry to create a sound lock from the
Commons, permanent stairs, railing and
wheelchair lift on the stage left, ceiling
remodel with drywall clouds and new wall
panels for improved acoustics, and new
display cases in the Commons on either side
of the new interior entrance.
The seats and some of lighting are
newer and will remain. The overhaul is
expected to be completed the beginning of
October.
Family Rummage Sale benefits FAB; volunteers needed
Students who are part of the Fine Arts Boosters families will have a chance to raise money
for their student accounts, including for camp, on Saturday, June 8 at the FSFAB Family
Rummage Sale. The event will take place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the FHS Main Entrance. The
proceeds from sales will be credited to individual student accounts.
• Volunteers are needed to act as cashiers and help
throughout the day. Irneta Goedert, FAB secretary,
would like families to consider volunteering for a
two-hour shift.
• Each participating family will be assigned a Family ID
Number. This ID# will be used by the cashiers to
correctly credit each family account.
• The sticker must have the sale price for the item and
the Family ID# on it. Please use removable stickers. The
stickers will be removed from the item by the cashier
and placed in a logbook when the item is purchased.
At the end of the sale these stickers will be added up to
obtain cash value for each family.
FSFAB Family
Rummage Sale
WHO: Families of Ferndale
Marching Band & Orchestra
WHEN: Saturday, June 8 from
9 a.m.-3 p.m. (set up starts at
7:30 a.m.)
Where: FHS near Main
Entrance/Marquee
• The families will each be given an area in the front of the school, on a first come, first served
basis on June 8. Everyone must bring their own tables for display. A chair is also
recommended—it can be a long day.
• The pricing of items is the responsibility of the families along with setting up (starting at
7:30 a.m.) and removing any unsold items at the end of the sale. A truck will be arriving at
3:30 for any unwanted items that will be used as charitable donations.
The goal is to have everything cleaned up by 4 p.m. School dumpsters cannot be used.
Items can be donated to FSFAB. All proceeds will go into the FSFAB general fund, which in
turn goes back to the students. It would be extremely helpful if the items are priced ahead of
time and marked FAB on the sticker. Unsold items will be donated unless claimed by owner.
final planning of the sale, please contact Irenita Goedert at 248-398-6030 or
