Toward the end of her recently released book, Butterflies and All<br />
Things Sweet, Bonnae Gokson quotes the Bengali writer Rabindranath<br />
Tagore: “The butterfly counts not months but moments, and has<br />
time enough.” The book, subtitled The Story of Ms. B’s Cakes, is a<br />
celebration of Ms. Gokson’s focus on evanescent pleasures, on the<br />
enjoyment of moments, and on her tremendous talent for creating<br />
sweet moments for other people.<br />
These sweet moments often take the form of her famously<br />
inventive cakes. “The cakes I create for my customers are like<br />
butterflies, here and then gone, devoured in a few sweet bites,” she<br />
says. The book itself is a series of lovely moments, with images of<br />
the cakes surrounded by the things that have inspired them: “Spools<br />
of brightly colored ribbons, the seeds of a pomegranate, a fragment<br />
of handmade lace that holds memories of my years in fashion, the<br />
petals of a peony: all these things inspire me to create cakes that give<br />
pleasure to my customers.”<br />
You might say that Bonnae Gokson’s aim in life has been to<br />
release a series of butterflies out into the world. The evidence in her<br />
book suggests that she has been succeeding, and beautifully.<br />
