Martina added: “There are so many cultural barriers to still
overcome. On the professional level, it’s much, much better.
London really was the Olympics of the women. They were
the faces, they were the driving force. I’m excited about that
because girls can have women to look up to as their role
models, they don’t have to look to men as their role models.”
Just hours earlier the person responsible for staging those
London Olympics, Sebastian Coe, had shared a platform
Laureus Academy Member Lord Coe, one of Britain’s
LAUREUS ACADEMY MEMBER SEBASTIAN COE WITH CARLOS NUZMAN, PRESIDENT OF THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE FOR THE RIO 2016 OLYMPICS
Coe emphasised the synergy between Laureus and
the Olympic movement to emphasise the impact both
organisations can have on young lives. “Every opportunity
that we have to encourage young people to take up sport is
really important. The excitement generated by a really good
Games is the platform on which you build.”
Carlos Nuzman said: “I would like to thank members of the
Laureus family for being in Rio de Janeiro for this event. The
awarding of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to Rio de
Janeiro symbolises the understanding by the world of the
transformation sport can make possible. And this city will
serve as an example for other regions of the world.”
