C orporate social responsibility is about more than writing cheques. It is about life and existence for thousands of kids and young people in need, all over the world, for whom our commitment makes a big difference. As a Global Partner of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, IWC Schaffhausen promotes this concept through its own activities. “As a successful global business in the luxury goods sector, it is second nature to us to accept our social responsibility and support people who have to overcome the most difficult circumstances in life,” explained IWC Schaffhausen CEO Georges Kern. During the Laureus World Sports Awards held in Rio de Janeiro in March this year, IWC Schaffhausen demonstrated its commitment by releasing a limited edition watch in aid of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. The Swiss manufacturer recreated a watchmaking legend, the Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph, available in a ‘Laureus Sport for Good Foundation’ limited edition of 1,000 pieces, resplendent in the distinctive Laureus blue. A particular highlight is a poignant engraving on the back of the timepiece, based on a drawing by 12-year-old Hakkini Hasanga Sandumal De Silva. Hakkini from Sri Lanka had entered the children’s drawing competition, held annually by IWC Schaffhausen at Laureus Foundation projects around the world. “The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is a cause dear to our hearts, because its sports projects open prospects for young people all over the globe,” added Georges Kern.
During the Laureus World Sports Awards, IWC Schaffhausen invited key journalists to visit the Complexo Esportivo da Rocinha, situated in a large favela in Rio de Janeiro. The Sports Centre currently benefits 4,500 people and offers 17 different sports, plus providing social and health services. In the presence of Laureus Award Winner Michael Phelps and many other Laureus World Sports Academy Members, IWC’s guests witnessed how sport is making a difference amidst poverty and difficult living conditions. The result of this project visit reflected in an overwhelming media response bringing greater visibility to the cause of Laureus in Brazil. Another great opportunity to support the Laureus recipe for success was given during the Laureus Polo Cup, when some of the world’s best polo players met at the historic Guards Polo Club in Windsor. IWC Schaffhausen donated a Portofino Chronograph Edition ‘Laureus Sport for Good Foundation watch’ was auctioned to raise funds for the Fundación Laureus Argentina. At the end of the day the children were the winners when more than £5,500 had been raised from the auction for their sports projects.
