Welcome to Western
It is with great excitement and anticipation that Western take on Caversham – a
club that has proven consistently to be one of the best in the country.
Realistically, for most clubs this is the beauty of New Zealand’s premier
knock-out football cup competition – the chance to be pitted against teams from
outside their own region and to gauge their own abilities against quality
opposition.
It has been several years since the two clubs met in any competition, an
exciting game that saw Caversham run out 3-2 winners in the South Island
Football Championship semi-final in 2009.
For Western, several players remain and look forward to a rematch.
Notably, a number of the red and black contingent were inexperienced youngsters
in 2009, several have now won National Youth League titles and represented
Canterbury United at National League level.
Whilst Mainland Premier League form has been topsy-turvy to say the
least, an exciting penalty shoot-out victory over reigning MPL champions (and
bitter foes) Woolston-Technical in the last round has every Western player
relishing the chance to come face to face with boys from Cavy – some of whom
are known well to the lads (especially Blair Duncan who returns to his former
club probably a lot sooner than expected).
Best of luck to both sides and here’s to an exciting contest.
Keen Eye, snot Western, its the pride of Culling park, El Technicos
