PSA 270 MENTAL ILLNESS, SUBSTANCE ABUSE<br />

AND CRIME (4 CREDITS)<br />

This course will provide an overview of the interface between<br />

mental illness and the criminal justice system as well as the<br />

relationship between substance abuse and criminal offending.<br />

The student will be exposed to the historical and contemporary<br />

criminal justice system responses to illegal substances and how<br />

the issue of mental illness influences behavior. The course will<br />

also provide the student with the ability to determine whether<br />

someone is suffering from mental illness or are under the<br />

influence of substances. Particular emphasis will be placed on<br />

dispelling the many myths and misconceptions that surround<br />

this topic in contemporary culture and replacing them with<br />

sound empirical information. Prerequisite: None<br />

PSA 271 SEX CRIMES AND SEX OFFENDERS<br />

(4 CREDITS)<br />

This course will provide the student with an introductory look<br />

at the various aspects of crimes involving sexual conduct and<br />

the offenders who commit them. The student will be introduced<br />

to the topic from a legal, psychological and sociological<br />

perspective. Particular emphasis will be placed on dispelling<br />

the many myths and misconceptions that surround this topic in<br />

contemporary culture and replacing them with sound empirical<br />

information. Prerequisite: None<br />

PSA 280 CRIMINAL LAW FOR PUBLIC SAFETY<br />

PROFESSIONALS (4 CREDITS)<br />

This course is designed to give the student content knowledge of<br />

state and federal laws. The student will also learn how to apply<br />

these state and federal laws in real-world settings.<br />

Prerequisite: None<br />

PSA 301 INTRODUCTION TO SYSTEMS OF SOCIAL<br />

CONTROL (4 CREDITS)<br />

This course provides an overview of the various systems of social<br />

control, including law enforcement, the courts, corrections,<br />

probation and parole, schools, churches, families, government<br />

and related participants. The interrelated and interdependence<br />

as well as the particular role each plays in the overall system of<br />

social control is the focus of this course. Prerequisites: PSA 101,<br />

PSA 160, PSA 164, PSA 165<br />

PSA 303 OCCUPATIONAL AND WHITE COLLAR<br />

CRIME (4 CREDITS)<br />

A study of white collar and occupational crime. this course<br />

focuses on theories to improve understanding of the reasons<br />

for this crime type and “best practices’ in efforts to respond by<br />

the public safety professionals. The emphasis is also placed on<br />

understanding various types of white collar and occupational<br />

crime in the public and private sectors. Prerequisite: PSA 301<br />

PSA 304 CURRENT ISSUES IN TERRORISM<br />

(4 CREDITS)<br />

An investigation of domestic and international terrorism and<br />

terrorist organizations, with a focus on causes, organization,<br />

funding, threats and the future of terrorism. Topics include a<br />

consideration of chemical, biological, nuclear and cyberspace<br />

dimensions. The impact of the media, and the use of technology<br />

in counter terrorism are considered. The role and responsibility<br />

of various public safety functions responding to this issue are<br />

considered. Prerequisite: PSA 301<br />

PSA 305 RACE CRIME AND JUSTICE (4 CREDITS)<br />

An investigation of the social dynamics that underlie race,<br />

crime and justice. Topics include an in depth look at possible<br />

discrimination within the criminal justice system as well as<br />

the racial breakdown of offenders. Emphasis is placed on the<br />

ability to understand criminal offenders by stepping outside of<br />

themselves and looking at the strange in the familiar, the general<br />

in the specific, and to depersonalize the personal. Prerequisite:<br />

PSA 301<br />

PSA 310 CRIMINOLOGY (4 CREDITS)<br />

An advanced examination of the theory, research and findings<br />

of the classical school, positivist school, and behavior of the<br />

criminal law. Various topics include: the history of criminal<br />

theories; social reactions to crime; deviant subcultures; and<br />

criminal organizations and institutions in society. Particular<br />

attention will be given to how the various criminological theories<br />

are practiced in the field of justice and public safety. Prerequisite:<br />

PSA 301<br />

PSA 398 RESEARCH METHODS FOR PUBLIC<br />

SAFETY PROFESSIONALS (4 CREDITS)<br />

A study of the principals, data sources, and methods appropriate<br />

for careers in justice and public safety. <strong>Course</strong> topics will<br />

include quantitative and qualitative research methods.<br />

Attention will be given to research design, sampling, scaling;<br />

questionnaire construction; survey research, interviewing, and<br />

participant observation. Prerequisite: PSA 301<br />

PSA 401 CRIMINALISTICS (4 CREDITS)<br />

This course is designed to give the student a broad<br />

understanding of how science is used to aid criminal<br />

investigations. The student will learn principles of crime<br />

scene evidence collection and rudimentary evidence analysis.<br />

Prerequisite: PSA 301<br />

PSA 402 CURRENT ISSUES IN PUBLIC SAFETY<br />

ADMINISTRATION (4 CREDITS)<br />

This course will develop the student’s administration abilities<br />

by applying them directly to public safety administration issues.<br />

Administration content knowledge will be applied to current<br />

issues in public safety administration. Prerequisite: PSA 301<br />

PSA 403 EMERGENCY PLANNING AND INCIDENT<br />

PLANNING (4 CREDITS)<br />

This course will give the student advanced understanding of<br />

emergency management planning and practice. During this<br />

course the student will also receive NIMS certification.<br />

Prerequisite: PSA 301<br />

PSA 404 SENIOR SEMINAR IN JUSTICE AND<br />

PUBLIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION<br />

(4 CREDITS)<br />

This is a capstone course designed to complete the student’s<br />

understanding of administration in public safety. The course<br />

will be both content-driven and student project-driven. These<br />

will culminate in a final project that will present the student’s<br />

entire body of work in the degree program. Prerequisite: PSA<br />

301<br />

PSA 498 EXTERNSHIP IN JUSTICE AND PUBLIC<br />

SAFETY ADMINISTRATION<br />

(4 CREDITS)<br />

This class will place students in the agency of their choice.<br />

They should choose an agency in which they have an interest<br />

of possible employment in the future. The student will also<br />

spend some direct time with the faculty member supervising<br />

the internship to ensure the student is maintaining satisfactory<br />

process as well as guide the student in applying his/her<br />

education in their internship. Prerequisite: PSA 301<br />
