early heritage sites and structures<br />

associated with the waters <strong>of</strong> the Barwon<br />

river and Corio Bay, including indigenous<br />

places; river crossings; quarrying;<br />

water supply and sewerage; maritime<br />

and shipping sites; recreational and<br />

starting from Anakie s<strong>to</strong>ny Creek picnic<br />

ground, 10 km north <strong>of</strong> Anakie, east <strong>of</strong>f<br />

the geelong-Ballan road.<br />

tIMe: 2pm start, 3 km, 1 hour (one way)<br />

COSt: No charge<br />

parks vic<strong>to</strong>ria rangers <strong>of</strong>fer vehicular<br />

transport from the picnic ground <strong>to</strong> the<br />

lower reservoir wall for those unable <strong>to</strong><br />

manage the walk.<br />

enjoy this leisurely walk through Anakie<br />

gorge along a relatively flat gradient <strong>to</strong><br />

reach the lower s<strong>to</strong>ny Creek reservoir<br />

wall, constructed in 1874 and the first<br />

concrete dam wall in the southern<br />

hemisphere. in the 1870s the ranges<br />

began <strong>to</strong> play a vital role supplying the<br />

first permanent water <strong>to</strong> geelong. 3000<br />

ha <strong>of</strong> the Brisbane ranges were reserved<br />

as a catchment area and a pipeline was<br />

built through Anakie gorge. remains <strong>of</strong><br />

the pipe and weirs are still visible <strong>to</strong>day.<br />
