Written for the 2011 Heritage Festival,
this historical re-enactment by local
playwright Doug Mann features Neil
Fletcher as “The Boatman”
With its own enigmatic pulse the river
Barwon flows, living and life giving,
through the heart of geelong. its waters
and 22 kilometres of bank-side parks are
home to a profusion of natural and
man-made heritage, each with many
a story to tell. There are pelican and
platypus (yes, deep in the heart of
the city!), rosella and redfin, red gum,
cumbungi. ghosts can be heard in
the whispering reeds, haunting the
cliffs and the midden heaps. stately
gardens look down on the waters and
once bustling factories have long held
their breath. look closely and you may
see the champion rowers with bristling
moustaches drip ripples of gold from
their glistening oars. Watch closely, and
listen, to the tales of The Boatman as he
unlocks the secrets that belong to us all
in the waters of the river, time present,
time past, time unknown.
