Come and learn the stories of bygone
days in Ballarat at the 2011 Ballarat
Heritage Weekend.
Ballarat’s heritage will come to life as
you wander along grand streets, board
the steam locomotive or horse drawn
carriage and visit heritage buildings and
gardens around town.
This year, you will have the opportunity
to enjoy tours and special presentations.
guided and self guided heritage tours
will run throughout Ballarat Heritage
Weekend, providing visitors with a unique
opportunity to experience the real history
of Ballarat in an intimate environment.
An information desk will be set up at
the Ballarat Mining exchange in lydiard
street to provide visitors with information
on events and activities. A range of local
and state historic and heritage societies
and organisations will also be on display.
visitors can collect a fact sheet at
specific heritage venues and learn about
intriguing architectural features, mysteries
and accounts of past inhabitants.
SteaM traIN rIDeS
experience the sight, sound and smell
of the mighty steam locomotive as it
takes you on a nostalgic one hour joy
ride outside Ballarat and return. steam
rail victoria will run six shuttles per day
throughout Ballarat Heritage Weekend.
Ballarat tOWN hall
With its impressive tower, the Ballarat
Town Hall is a monumental structure
and one of Ballarat’s most distinctive
buildings. it was officially opened in 1872.
Ballarat is the only city in regional victoria
with two working sets of bells. The Alfred
Bells are in the Town Hall and the second
set is in st peter’s Church further along
in sturt street. visitors will have the
opportunity to hear them ring out over
Ballarat Heritage Weekend.
MeChaNICS INStItute
This remarkable building is home to one
of Ballarat’s most significant institutions.
in the days before government funded
libraries and adult education, the
Mechanics’ institute provided people
with much-needed access to books,
newspapers, periodicals, lectures and
scientific demonstrations. Their halls
also provided local communities with a
place for social, cultural and recreational
gatherings. The Ballaarat Mechanics
institute is one of a select few that can
claim to continuously provided library
services since its inception.
Ballarat traDeS hall
The history of the Trades Hall is interwoven
in the history of Ballarat’s industrial
and political labour movement. The
establishment of the 8 hour day led to the
formation of eight hour committees and
hence the need for a meeting place for
these organisations. it wasn’t until 1887
that the foundation stone was laid for the
erection of the Trades Hall in Ballarat. The
building is a rare example of the Baroque
italianate style with giant Corinthian
Columns and an internal stairwell of
cantilevered bluestone treads.
OlD COlONIStS’ CluB
The Old Colonists’ Association was
formed in Ballarat in 1883 and is now
listed on the victorian Heritage register.
This stunning victorian renaissance revival
hall was constructed in 1888 on the site
of the former gold escort barracks and
stables. Designed by A.g.leggie, the
building’s façade features balustrades
and the relief letters and coat of arms
can be seen in the centre pediment.
The Ballarat Heritage Weekend event
program will offer many things to see and

Transport yourself back in time to an era
where elegant ladies and gentlemen
took the air in their own carriage. survey
the buildings and streetscapes of the
premier city of the goldfields as you relax
in a 1800s style horse drawn carriage.
rides will run every ten minutes from the
Ballarat Town Hall.
VINtaGe BuS rIDeS
Take a ride in a superby maintained 1938
American Diamond T vintage bus around
the streets of Ballarat. Collect a free
boarding pass from the Ballarat Mining
exchange information desk.
VINtaGe traM aND hOrSe DraWN traM
rIDeS
enjoy a vintage tram ride through the
Ballarat Botanical gardens or a ride on
a horse drawn tram built in 1887. While
at the gardens, make sure you visit the
robert Clark Centre, Adam lindsay Craft
Cottage and Conservatory buildings and
stroll through the 19th century gardens to
discover its significant historical features.

The lake goldsmith steam preservation
society was established in the late 1950’s,
with a handful of remnant engines
operating in a paddock.
From that point, the movement has
advanced to the position, as “Australia’s
premier steam rally” and with
international recognition.
The Association’s 38 acre site whilst being
home to one of the largest gatherings of
historic machinery in Australia, also hosts
visiting enthusiast groups, including car,
truck, tractor and stationery engine clubs
bringing an ever changing variety of
exciting and unusual exhibits to our rallies.
