VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS
The Volleyball teams have
been playing three noon
hours per week since the
beginning of December. There
were eight teams in all,
with four teams playing on
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
coached by staff members.
Team members played
very enthusiastically and
not one game was missed!
It all came to a showdown
on Monday, January 25, when
the playoffs were held. Team
eight won by one point: Congratulations
to the captain,
Greg Ross,and to the other
team members: Tessa Lochead,
Jamie Bresolin, Justine Fowler,
Sterling Doucette, Sarah
Bernier, Alex McGill,
Morgan Myers Cavanagh, Julia
Gaffield, and Lynne Wolfson.
THEATRE DES LUTINS
On Friday, January 22, the
students were entertained by
as well as the costumes, were
very colourful; the students
empathized with Sophie and
there was frequent audience
participation in order to
help Sophie out of her impending
dilemma.
The "Théâtre des Lutins"
is a regular contributor to
the cultural aspect of the
programme, bringing a variety
of French plays to the
school. This play was anothex
success,in a record of fine
performances.
MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY READ-A-THON
On Monday, January 25, First
Avenue P.S. launched a Read-
A-Thon for Muscular Dystrophy.
A representative of
the Muscular Dystrophy Society
of Canada gave a presentation
explaining to the
student body the particulars
of the disease. Afterwards,
the children were given
pledge cards, where they will
keep a record of the books
they have read, and the
sponsors who are willing
the group "Théâtre des Lutins' to donate money in support
who presented the play "Les of their efforts ana for
malheurs de Sophie." The the Muscular Dystrophy Socaudience
was delighted by iety. Thus, the more books
the play, and by the antics that are read, the more money
of Sophie, a precocious 5- can be donated to the Socyear
old who constantly seem- iety. At First Ave. P.S. we
ed to be getting into trouble, are planning to put a day
The actors and the scener Y, aside where the children will
be encouraged to spend extra
time reading. The Read-
A-Thon ends March 5, when
monies will be collected
and a cheque sent off on
behalf of First Ave. P.S.
Students have been enthusiastically
seeking pledges;
many have already filled
their cards.
NON-SMOKING WEEK
The Kick-off was a great
success, with the media
event organized by the Canadian
Council on Smoking
and Health. Pertinent and
thought-provoking questions
were prepared by the students
for the Honourable
Benoît Bouchard, David
Hill and Carolyn Waldo, who
answered each student's
questions in either French
or English. The gym and
hall walls were decorated
with the many coloured posters
the students had prepared
during the previous
week, and many of them
will be kept, with the students'
permission, in the
Clearing House of the CCSH
for future use. During the
week of the campaign, the
posters were a constant
reminder of the hazards of
smoking.
