Vandalism

It was a beautiful Saturday
morning. My oldest boy,
Jason, and I were doing shopping
errands for the family,
and I'd pulled into a self
serve gas bar for a fill up.
I got out, went to the rear
of the car where the gas
filler was located. That's
when I noticed the damage.
Someone had taken, a nail
or a key and scratched the
side of our car. It takes
only seconds to cause hundreds
of dollars worth of
damage to a vehicle. It was
even more frustrating because
we had purchased it
only months ago.
Jason and I discussed the
mindset which would have
caused someone to target our
vehicle for vandalism. Perhaps
because it was a new
car it stuck out from the
rest. It could have been
because of the car's.,distinctive
white colour. We
ruled out revenge as a motive
because the car had to
have been damaged in the
shopping centre parking lot
the day before; a totally
anonymous environment.
Fortunately, the person
responsible might have been
disturbed as the vandalism
was restricted to the right
rear of the vehicle.
All the reports I have
made while on general patrol
or have read when preparing
the crime synopsis for
the GZebe Report, have made
me empathize with the victims
behind the numbers. I understand
the frustration and
anger one can experience
when discovering one has
been victimized by such
"get a life" type individuals
Recently my supervisor,
Inspector Tony Skinner, received
a complaint from
Glebe residents near Lansdowne
Park concerning the
increased frequency of
damage to and theft from
autos. I was assigned to
work the afternoon shift in
the Lansdowne Park area
during Ottawa Senator hockey
games. It seems that while
fans are enjoying the
games inside the arena, the

a community alert
critinal element are damaging
and stealing from the
unattended vehicles. One
need only look to the
'Theft under $1000' section
in the Crime Synopsis Report
to see that the majority
of _thefts and damages are
in Area Three, the Lansdowne
Park area.
My duties are to act as
a visible deterrent to criminals
and hopefully to
apprehend and charge those
responsible for these crimes.
The Criminal Code term
for vandalism is mischief.
"Every one commits mischief
who wilfully
destroys or damages
property;
renders property dangerous,
useless, inoperative
or ineffective;
obstructs, interrupts
or interferes with the lawful
use, enjoyment or operation
of property; or
obstructs, interrupts
or interferes with any person
in the lawful use, enjoyment
or operation of
property."
Any time there is a special
event such as Winterlude,
or a sporting event
at Lansdowne Park, large
numbers of people are
attracted to this community.
The criminal element are
well aware of this, so remember,
"out of sight, out
of mind." Don't leave your
valuables visible on car
seats. The locked door is
a fragile defense against
the determined deviant who
would steal your property,
so remove any temptation.
