CHURCH NEWS Year of the rooster BY REV. DAVID PAN We celebrated the New Year a week after Christmas. But Chinese people are celebrating the New Year again. January 23rd is the Chinese New Year. The members of the Chinese Bible Church are going to have a pot-luck dinner and various programs that evening in the church. The Chinese Community Association also offered special programs for the public on February 6th, in the Nepean Civic Square/Theatre. These included the lion's dance, martial arts demonstrations, folk dances, Chinese music and painting, and noodle stretching demonstration. There were exhibits of acupuncture equipment, musical instruments, evolution of the Chinese language, industrial products, banquet tableware, etc., movies on China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, children's cartoons, storytelling. Cultural activities included a musical performance on the piano, violin and Chines é instruments; Cantonese opera, Police Chorus, Lion Dance, Les Petits Ballets, Phoenix Dance Troupe, and a variety of international dances. It is the year of the rooster. The rooster is in the family of the chicken. It is interesting to see how English-speaking people use the word "chicken." For example: chicken-feed, and chicken out. I found a statement in an English- Chinese Dictionary, "Chinese people like chicken /better than Americans," (than Canadians too, I guess). It is more interesting to see how the Bible records "chicken." "0 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,----." A hen always guides and protects her chicks. She dies to protect her chicks if it is necessary. The loving God always guides us, provides for us, and protects us. He even became a man to come to the world to die for us, to save us from the judgement. We also remember that Jesus said to Peter, "I tell you the truth, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the other disciples said the same. Immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly. (Matthew 26:34-35, 74-75) It is easy for a Christian to think about Peter when he hears a rooster crow. But it is impossible for people who live in a city to hear that. Sometimes I miss my childhood when I lived on my grandparents' farm. A rooster crowing can mean the dawn is coming, the darkness is leaving. It's the time to wake up to greet a new day. I think the rooster can symbolize alertness, preciseness, punctuality, a new life, a new beginning, a new hope and a new joy. Any one who repents and turns to God can have the new life, the new beginning, the new hope and the new joy. Now we are looking forward to Easter. The Chinese Christian Singers will be presenting the "Olivet to Calvary" on April 10 at Fourth Avenue Baptist Church and on April 11 at The Chinese United Church.
