Smokey Joe's Cafe' sizzles at Fort Peck Theatre

Before Don Maclean
drove his Chevy to the
levee, before the British
Invasion, even before a
waist-up Elvis appeared
on the Ed Sullivan Show,
a revolution shook the
foundations of American
pop music.
This revolution was
created to a large degree
by Jerry Leiber and Mike
Stoller, whose music
brought a new sound
and a new rhythm to the
musical scene. Stnokey
Joe's Cafe', now playing
at the Fort Peck Summer
Theatre, is a celebration
of the vast contribution
of Leiber and Stoller to
the evolution of popular
music. It does so
remarkably well; Stnokey
Joe 's Cafe' closed in 2000
after 2,036 performances
- the longest running
musical revue in the
history of Broadway.
Immediately impressive
is the vast variety
of musical genres
Leiber and Stoller pro-
duced. Many of their
tunes, like Hound Dog
and Jailhouse Rock, are
beloved oldies. Others
range from rollicking
and rocking to pensive

soulful. Some are tunes
that have been on our lips
for years; others may not
have met popular success,
but are evidence of
the enormous talent of
this musical duo.
Just as impressive is
the way in which the cast
of Smokey Joe5 Cafe'
presents these tunes.
The vocal talent of every
single member of the cast Christopher Desmond,
is enormous. They invite James Grigsby, and

Scotty hoop camps start Saturday
Kids can still sign up for the Glasgow Boys' &
Girls' Basketball Camps to be held in the Glasgow
High School gymnasium.
Little Scotties (boys and girls) entering grades 1-
4 this fall will have camp Saturday. May 3 1 st through
Monday, June 2nd with a cost of $35 per athlete. Grades
1-2 will have the gym from 4 to 6 p.m. and grades 3-4
from 6 to 8 p.m.
Boys and girls in grades 5-8 will hold camp June
10-1 3 (Tuesday thru Friday) with a cost of $45 per
athlete. Grades 5-6 will be instructed from 10 a.m. to
noon and grades 7-8 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Campers will receive a t-shirt and a basketball.
Registration forms are available at the Glasgow schools.

Reaching the Pinochle Pinnacle
The Pinochle Marathon wrapped up another season
with Marlene Jackson and Lois McIntyre as the end-ofyear
champions.
2nd place went to Pam LaRoque and Cindy Taylor;
3rd place, Norma Lee and Deanna Nelson; 4th place,
Candy France and Carol Sonsteng; 5th place, Delores
Cumber and Shirley Elfring; and 6th place, lsella Cook
and Theresa Shipp.
May winners were, I st place, Nadine Jakanoski and
Ruth Olsen; 2nd place, Lillian Boos and Myrna Weber:

It's Lala-Poo-Looza time again
Lalapoolooza squares are on sale now
at the Children's Museum!
Squares on the grid are recreated
on a much larger scale during the
Northeast Montana Fair on
August 14th at 5:30 p.m. in the
4-H arena. A cow will be placed on
this grid and will select the winning
square with her cow-pie.
The owner of the winning square
will receive half of the money
collected (up to $2000). Last years winner

Mushroom Steak 'n' Linguine
8 oz uncooked linguine l/2 Ib sliced fresh
1 Ib boneless beef top mushrooms
round steak, cut into thin 1 C fresh spinach
strips
(coarsely chopped)
l/4 tsp salt 1/2 tsp dried rosemary,
Y4 tsp pepper
crushed
3 tsp olive oil, divided 34 C chive and onion
1 C chopped sweet red cream cheese
Pepper
l/2 C sour cream
1/2 C chopped onion 1 TBS milk
Cook linguine according to package directions.
Meanwhile, sprinkle beef with salt and pepper. In a large
skillet, sautC beef in 2 tsp oil until juices run clear. Remove
and keep warm. In the same pan, saute red pepper and onion in
remaining oil until tender. Add mushrooms; saute 1-2 minutes
longer or until tender. Add spinach and rosemary; cook and
stir just until spinach is wilted. Stir in the cream cheese, sour
cream and milk; add the beef and toss. Serve over linguine.

Etchart - lets the men know they are equal to the
challenge. They are spectacular, particukirly when
they share their talents on I Am Woman. Some of
their tunes are downright sultry, like Trouble and
Solrze Cats Know.
The first act closes with a redemption medley of
D. \V. Washburrl and Saved. The audience was clearly
eager for more and was treated to another rocking
medley of Baby, Tllat Is Rock & Roll, Yakrty Yak,
and Charlie Brorvlz to open the second. From there,
time went all too swiftly as these ~narvelousingers
swept from tune to tune, moving from one emotion
to another. all the while maintaining a tremendous
vocal quality.
The finale. Stclrlcl by Me, was terrific.
If you long for an evening that is fun and
entertaining. if you want to be swept back to the days
of saddle shoes and bobby socks. or if you just love
music, Stnokey Joe's Caf6 is a must-see. The show
sizzles at the Fort Peck Summer Theatre May 30 and
3 1 and June 1,6, 7, and 8.

The Fort Peck Theatre and the Valley County
Transit have partnered to provide low-cost
transportation to the public from Glasgow to the Fort
Peck Summer Theatre. For only $2 per person, the
bus will travel to Fort Peck the first two Fridays and
the last Sunday of each show.
Pick up of passengers will take place one hour
prior to show time at the Valley County Courthouse.
A stop will also be made at the Kiwanis Park
Campground in Fort Peck approximately '/z hour
before show time.

The Irle School 2nd graders will be presenting
their annual performance of the play "Bugz!" on
