Special Education Consultants<br />

Special Education consultants, who serve as special<br />

education representatives, support the instructional<br />

components of the diverse learners in both the special<br />

education and general education classrooms. Expertise is<br />

available in all disability areas as well as in general<br />

educational areas.<br />

Special Education Representatives<br />

School psychologists, school social workers, and special<br />

education consultants are individuals who serve as<br />

special education representatives. They are assigned to<br />

individual districts and provide a broad base of services<br />

to their assignment areas.<br />

Speech and Language<br />

This program applies principles, methods and procedures<br />

for an analysis of speech and language comprehension<br />

and production to determine communicative<br />

competencies and provides intervention strategies and<br />

services related to speech and language development, as<br />

well as disorders of language, voice, articulation and<br />

fluency.<br />

Student Events<br />

Each year, several student events are coordinated<br />

through the <strong>AEA</strong>: History Day, Math Day, Senate Youth,<br />

Student Media Festival and Oratory Contest.<br />

Substitute Authorization<br />

GH<strong>AEA</strong> is an approved provider for the Substitute<br />

Authorization program. Substitute Authorization allows a<br />

person with a baccalaureate degree or a paraprofessional<br />

certificate to substitute in the middle, junior high or high<br />

school for a maximum of five days in one assignment.<br />

The authorization is issued upon the successful<br />

completion of a training program.<br />

Summer Media Services<br />

Media services remain much the same during the<br />

summer except staff is reduced and delivery is made to<br />

local school districts weekly.<br />

Surveys<br />

GH<strong>AEA</strong> provides support for the development of local<br />

needs assessment surveys. A variety of forms are<br />

available including online surveys. The <strong>AEA</strong> utilizes a<br />

scanner to score surveys and has the software to quickly<br />

provide results in a variety of formats.<br />

Talented and Gifted<br />

Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing<br />

Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing specialize in<br />

the education, communication and auditory rehabilitation<br />

of students (birth to 21) who are deaf or hard of<br />

hearing. Services are itinerant and provided in the<br />

student’s school or home. Instruction in the school is<br />

either individual or within the classroom. Teachers of the<br />

deaf and hard of hearing work with the student, parents<br />

and school team to ensure success in the educational<br />

environment.<br />

Teachers of the Visually Impaired<br />

This program is designed to serve children who are<br />

visually impaired. The primary focus is the development<br />

of skills required to participate in the general education<br />

environment.<br />

Transition Planning Services<br />

Transition planning services assist in the process to aid<br />

students with disabilities to transition from high school<br />

to the adult world and assist school districts to meet state<br />

performance standards of Indicator B13 and B14.<br />
