A Bio-Sketch<br />

Summary<br />

Educated in India (Presidency College, Calcutta University, Jadavpur University, Calcutta) and the UK (University of<br />

Stirling), <strong>Prof</strong>essor <strong>Mitra</strong> trained in the private sector in the UK, worked as a Principal Officer for local government also<br />

in the UK, specialising in economic and business development, and taught at 3 other universities in the UK, before<br />

joining the University of Essex. He also set up 2 businesses in London.<br />

He has written and published widely on the subject of entrepreneurship, innovation and economic development with<br />

significant contributions to international refereed journals, through book chapters in leading research monographs, at<br />

refereed international conferences, seminars, symposia and workshops. He is currently editing a Routledge (Taylor and<br />

Francis) series on Entrepreneurship Studies with <strong>Prof</strong>essor Zoltan Acs of the George Mason School of Public Policy,<br />

George Mason University, USA and new text on Entrepreneurship and Regional Development which is expected to be<br />

published by Routledge in the autumn (2009).<br />

Over the last two decades, <strong>Prof</strong>essor <strong>Mitra</strong> has taught entrepreneurship, innovation management and regional<br />

development courses at universities in China, Finland France, Italy, India, Latvia, Malaysia, Poland, and other countries.<br />

He has also led several international research and development, knowledge transfer and training projects involving<br />

leading institutions from various countries in Europe and Asia.<br />

Central to the development and management of numerous international projects is <strong>Prof</strong>essor <strong>Mitra</strong>’s direct involvement<br />

in the bidding for and raising of significant amount of funding from a range of public and private international<br />

organisations (European Commission, Department for Trade and Industry, Department for International Development,<br />

Regional Development Agencies, Department for Innovation and Universities, and various private sector sponsors),<br />

which have contributed directly to the success of such projects.<br />
