Ceramic lying must go together with expansion joint placing. Joints are discontinuous
elements which allow dilatation and contraction fl ooring movements and they avoid both
tension and damages that may occur due to thermal changes.

Construction elements such as fl ooring also require expansion joints to take up
dimensional changes. The Spanish Technical Building Code (CTE) requires them to avoid
continuous elements of more of 40m length.
