Es brummt und braust und prasselt hieher! Dort bricht’s durch den Wald, will auf mich zu! Ein gräßlicher Rachen reißt sich mir auf: der Wurm will mich fangen! Fafner! Fafner! SIEGFRIED Heda! Du Fauler! Bist du nun fertig? Schnell! Wie steht’s mit dem Schwert? Wo steckt der Schmied? Stahl er sich fort? Hehe! Mime, du Memme! Wo bist du? Wo birgst du dich? MIME Bist du es, Kind? Kommst du allein? SIEGFRIED Hinter dem Amboß? Sag’, was schufest du dort? Schärftest du mir das Schwert? 18 for your clever head forfeit – l leave it to him who has never learned to fear. Scene three MIME Accursed light! Is the air on fire over there? What is it flickers and dazzles, what shimmers and swirls, what hovers there and floats and wavers all around? It glimmers and glitters there in the sun’s glow! What is that soughing, buzzing and swishing that fills the air! It growls and roars and crackles hitherwards! It comes bursting through the forest over yonder and wants to get at me! Its terrible maw gapes wide for me! The Dragon is out to catch me! Fafner! Fafner! SIEGFRIED Hie there, you lazybones! Have you finished yet? Hurry up-how’s the Sword getting on? Where’s the smith got to? Has he sneaked off? Hey, Mime – you coward where are you? Where are you hiding? MIME Is it you, child? Are you alone? SIEGFRIED Behind the anvil? Say, what have you been up to there? Are you sharpening the Sword for me? MIME Das Schwert? Das Schwert? Wie möcht’ ich’s schweißen? – „Nur wer das Fürchten nie erfuhr, schmiedet Notung neu.” Zu weise ward ich für solches Werk! SIEGFRIED Wirst du mir reden? Soll ich dir raten? MIME Wo nähm’ ich redlichen Rat? Mein weises Haupt hab’ ich verwettet: verfallen, verlor ich’s an den, „der das Fürchten nicht gelernt”. SIEGFRIED Sind mir das Flausen? Willst du mir flieh’n? MIME Wohl flöh’ ich dem, der’s Fürchten kennt! Doch das ließ ich, dem Kinde zu lehren! Ich Dummer vergaß, was einzig gut: Liebe zu mir sollt’ er lernen; das gelang nun leider faul! Wie bring’ ich das Fürchten ihm bei? SIEGFRIED He! Muß ich helfen? Was fegtest du heut’? MIME Um dich nur besorgt, versank ich in Sinnen, wie ich dich Wichtiges wiese. SIEGFRIED Bis unter den Sitz warst du versunken: was Wichtiges fandest du da? MIME Das Fürchten lernt’ ich für dich, daß ich’s dich Dummen lehre. 19 MIME The Sword? The Sword? How might I weld it?’ “Only he who has never known fear, can forge Nothung anew.” I have become too wise for such work! SIEGFRIED Will you tell me? Or must I help you? MIME Where should I take honest counsel? My clever head I have gambled away; doomed – I have forfeited it to “the man who has never learned to fear.” SIEGFRIED What humbug is this? Are you trying to escape me? MIME I might escape him who knows fear but that I omitted to teach the child! Like a fool I forgot the one thing that was any good. He had to learn to love me – but I wasn’t very successful there, alas! How shall teach him to be afraid? SIEGFRIED Hey! Must I help you? What have you furbished today? MIME Worried on your behalf alone, I was sunk in deepest thought, how to show you something of great importance. SIEGFRIED You were certainly sunk right under the seat! What thing of great importance did you find there? MIME I learned what fear is for you, so that I can teach it you, simpleton.
4 SIEGFRIED Was ist’s mit dem Fürchten? MIME Erfuhrst du’s noch nie und willst aus dem Wald doch fort in die Welt? Was frommte das festeste Schwert, blieb dir das Fürchten fern? SIEGFRIED Faulen Rat erfindest du wohl? MIME Deiner Mutter Rat redet aus mir; was ich gelobte, muß ich nun lösen: in die listige Welt dich nicht zu entlassen, eh’ du nicht das Fürchten gelernt. SIEGFRIED Ist’s eine Kunst, was kenn’ ich sie nicht? Heraus! Was ist’s mit dem Fürchten? MIME Fühltest du nie im finstren Wald, bei Dämmerschein am dunklen Ort, wenn fern es säuselt, summt und saust, wildes Brummen näher braust, wirres Flackern um dich flimmert, schwellend Schwirren zu Leib dir schwebt: fühltest du dann nicht grieselnd Grausen die Glieder dir fahen? Glühender Schauer schüttelt die Glieder, in der Brust bebend und bang berstet hämmernd das Herz? Fühltest du das noch nicht, das Fürchten blieb dir dann fremd. SIEGFRIED Sonderlich seltsam muß das sein! Hart und fest, fühl’ ich, steht mir das Herz. Das Grieseln und Grausen, das Glühen und Schauern, 20 SIEGFRIED What is this fear, then? MIME You have never experienced it, and you want to leave the forest and go out into the world, do you? What good is the stoutest of swords, if fear is unknown to you? SIEGFRIED The counsel you invent is very likely worthless. MIME Your mother’s counsel speaks from my lips. I must now redeem the solemn promise I made, not to let you venture into the wicked world before you had learned what fear is. SIEGFRIED If it’s some craft, why don’t I know it? Out with it! What is fear? MIME Have you never felt in the gloomy forest, at twilight as the place grows dark, when in the distance comes a soughing rustling and swishing, and savage growling roars ever nearer, a dizzying flickering glimmers all about you, an ever-swelling hum hovers right above your head have you never felt then shuddering horror seize upon your every limb? Searing terror sets your limbs a-shudder, within your breast, quaking and afraid, your hammering heart is bursting If you have not felt that then, fear has remained still foreign to you SIEGFRIED Wondrous strange that must be! Ever firm and steady I feel my heart remain. The shivering and shuddering, the searing and the horror, Hitzen und Schwindeln, Hämmern und Beben: gern begehr’ ich das Bangen, sehnend verlangt mich’s der Lust! Doch wie bringst du, Mime, mir’s bei? Wie wärst du, Memme, mir Meister? MIME Folge mir nur, ich führe dich wohl: sinnend fand ich es aus. Ich weiß einen schlimmen Wurm, der würgt’ und schlang schon viel: Fafner lehrt dich das Fürchten, folgst du mir zu seinem Nest. SIEGFRIED Wo liegt er im Nest? MIME Neidhöhle wird es genannt: im Ost, am Ende des Walds. SIEGFRIED Dann wär’s nicht weit von der Welt? MIME Bei Neidhöhle liegt sie ganz nah. SIEGFRIED Dahin denn sollst du mich führen: lernt’ ich das Fürchten, dann fort in die Welt! Drum schnell! Schaffe das Schwert, in der Welt will ich es schwingen. MIME Das Schwert? O Not! SIEGFRIED Rasch in die Schmiede! Weis’, was du schufst! MIME Verfluchter Stahl! Zu flicken versteh’ ich ihn nicht: 21 heat and giddiness, hammering and quaking eagerly I long to experience this fright, yearningly crave the pleasure! But how will you teach it to me, Mime? How can you, coward, be my master? MIME If you will but follow me, I will lead you well; I have thought out a means. I know a wicked Dragon, that has slain and devoured many a one. Fafner will teach you to fear, if you do but follow me to his lair. SIEGFRIED Where does he lurk in his lair? MIME Neidhöhle it is called to the east, on the edge of the forest. SIEGFRIED Then it cannot be far from the world? MIME The world lies quite near to Neidhöhle! SIEGFRIED You shall lead me thither then. When I have learnt fearing, then forth into the world! So get on with the Sword quickly, I want to wield it in the world. MIME The Sword! O bitter torment! SIEGFRIED Quick to the smithy! Show what you have done. MIME Accursed steel! I don’t know how to mend it!
