A Global View
According to a survey done by the Pew Research Center in 2002, six out of every 10 Americans were more
likely to say that their culture is superior to others. Today, however, that number has declined to around
half. The younger generation in America is less likely to believe that their culture is superior, while that is
still an opinion held by the elder generations.
In the most recent study (February 2012), it is clear that Americans differ greatly in many other areas to
Europeans. While Americans are more likely to champion individualism over state involvement, European
countries are more apt to agree that the state is necessary and should see to the needs of its people,
especially Spain and France at around 60 percent. Only 36 percent of those in the U.S., however, believe
that one’s success in life is determined by forces outside of their control.
