Revamped <strong>Heritage</strong> Outlook.<br />

Two editions <strong>of</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> Outlook were produced in<br />

<strong>2009</strong> adding <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> growing collection. They included<br />

a r<strong>an</strong>ge <strong>of</strong> articles that continue <strong>to</strong> be pertinent <strong>to</strong><br />

heritage. These included one on <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> climate<br />

ch<strong>an</strong>ge on our inl<strong>an</strong>d waterways <strong>an</strong>d coastal heritage.<br />

Also included were articles on biodiversity, his<strong>to</strong>ric<br />

gardens <strong>an</strong>d our traditional boats. ‘Take a <strong>to</strong>ur <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Sh<strong>an</strong>non’ provided <strong>an</strong> overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cultural<br />

<strong>an</strong>d natural role <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sh<strong>an</strong>non as one <strong>of</strong> Irel<strong>an</strong>d’s<br />

greatest natural assets. These articles <strong>an</strong>d more are<br />

available on line.<br />

Kilkenny 400 Education project<br />

As Kilkenny pl<strong>an</strong>ned its celebrations for its his<strong>to</strong>ric<br />

400 <strong>an</strong>niversary The <strong>Heritage</strong> Council in partnership<br />

with Kilkenny Education Centre w<strong>an</strong>ted <strong>to</strong> mark <strong>the</strong><br />

occasion with a publication highlighting <strong>the</strong> cultural<br />

treasures <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city. The publication is supported<br />

by a website <strong>an</strong>d is made available for primary <strong>an</strong>d<br />

secondary schools. It provides work sheets <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong><br />

illustrated map <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ric city <strong>an</strong>d its walls <strong>an</strong>d<br />

provides <strong>the</strong> information <strong>to</strong> bring Kilkenny alive for<br />

students as <strong>the</strong>y walk around <strong>the</strong> medieval streets <strong>an</strong>d<br />

his<strong>to</strong>ric buildings <strong>an</strong>d wonder about its past.<br />

<strong>Heritage</strong> Week was <strong>an</strong>o<strong>the</strong>r great success this year<br />

with a record turn out for <strong>the</strong> m<strong>an</strong>y events taking<br />

place around <strong>the</strong> country. Press coverage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> week<br />

continued <strong>to</strong> rise with <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> Ry<strong>an</strong> Tubridy, a<br />

new <strong>Heritage</strong> Week Champion. New funding partners<br />

such as Fáilte Irel<strong>an</strong>d helped us continue <strong>to</strong> develop<br />

<strong>an</strong>d promote <strong>the</strong> week.<br />

Paddy Madden was <strong>the</strong> recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> joint <strong>Heritage</strong><br />

Council <strong>an</strong>d INTO Education Award in <strong>2009</strong>. His<br />

work on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> in Schools programme is<br />

widely known <strong>an</strong>d greatly respected. His love <strong>of</strong><br />

nature <strong>an</strong>d wildlife is shared in a gentle way with <strong>the</strong><br />

thous<strong>an</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> children that he has come in<strong>to</strong> contact<br />

with on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> in Schools programme over <strong>the</strong><br />

years. In addition his work with <strong>the</strong> Teacher Training<br />

Colleges me<strong>an</strong> that his knowledge <strong>an</strong>d enthusiasm is<br />

widely shared.<br />
