THE First Principles or Elements of Pronunciation, arc Lett~rs;
ofwhich there are twenty-six in llIe English La.nguage.
Lett~rs are divided into 'VO'Wel.and C07JSOnanM.
The vowels are, 0, e, i, 0, u, and;y, and ">, wben ending a syllable.
The consonants are, b, c, d,/, g, h,j, k, I, m, fI,P, 'Ir r,', " 'I1,.¥,Z,
:and;y, and'll>, when beginning a syllable.
The vowels may be subdivided into such as are simple and pure,
and, ~nto such as are compound and impure. The simple or pure
vowels require only one conformation of the organs to form them, and·
no motion itl the organs while forming.
The compound or impure vowels re'luire more than one conformationflbf
the organs to' (olm them, and a'motion in the organs while
forming. These observations premised, \Vemay call the following
