• The U.S. population increased by 13.2 percent over the last ten years, significantly
higher than the 9.8 percent growth rate reported for the period from 1980
to 1990.
• Iowa experienced a 5.4 percent population growth rate in the past decade,
outpacing the estimated rate of 3.3 percent from 1990-1999 and recovering from
the loss of 4.7 percent of the population between 1980 and 1990.
• The largest increases in population were in the south and west, with Nevada and
Arizona growing at three times the national rate.
• The midwest population grew more slowly than the nation as a whole, with
North Dakota and Iowa trailing neighboring states.
