lIEQUINEZ.<br />

WE passed the ruins of Volubilis and then took our last view<br />

of the picturesque town of Muley Edris, with its rich orchards and<br />

gardens and imposing background of savage mountains, and then<br />

arriving gradually at the summit of a crest of rugged rock we had<br />

our first look at the city of Mequiilez, lying away in the centre of<br />

au enormous, roughly-undulating plain, on the southern border<br />

of which e'l'tended east and west a fine range of evenly-disposed<br />

hills. As we went on the road began to broaden until near<br />

Mequinez it had reached a breadth of two hundred feet, and the<br />

tl'8vellers had also begun to increase in number. As we wound<br />

down the steep hillside we saw three 'small towns perched in almost<br />

inacessible positions to our left. The country was rich but wholly<br />

treeless, excepting such occasional orchards of olives, pomegranates<br />

and figs as hl&
