Provide Assistance to Remove from Danger<br />

If a no-notice event with life threatening danger exists, evacuate fi rst, explain later.<br />

• If shelter in place is possible, ask “what can I do while I am here to make this shelter in place<br />

more accessible?”<br />

Do not separate the person from his or her family members, caregivers or personal<br />

accommodations such as wheelchairs, walkers, communication devices, service animal,<br />

survival kit, “ go bag,” necessary equipment, batteries, charging systems, medicines, or<br />

supplies.<br />

Allow <strong>for</strong> independence when possible.<br />

Ask the person if they are “ok” or if they are experiencing issues with<br />

any part <strong>of</strong> the plan while underway. If issues come up, be fl exible,<br />

clarify the issue, and consider the needs <strong>of</strong> the person in order to<br />

reduce the stress.<br />

•<br />

Orient the person to the safe location ( shelter or otherwise) that is out<br />

<strong>of</strong> harm’s way with qualifi ed personnel, physical access, access to<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation and consideration <strong>for</strong> his or her medical needs.<br />
