ROTTER United As a minister, I have to" confess how difficult it is to translate the essence of the Gospel into the complex and devisive affairs of human life, especially when the issue 1s hot—when voices rise— when heat far exceeds Bght. Honesty compels us te admit there are a whole tyt of areas In which Christians do not qualify as experts simply because they are Christians. Competence in making decisions does not automatically flow from religious experience. it is out of that inadequacy that I dare to issue a word on a sorely devisive subject—the Crestwood teachers' 1 arte. A EVERYONE HAS an opinion.- Which of us, even though not directly affected, has not had a child or a grandchild lose valuable time in recent years because teachers and school boards have not been able to agree on a contract by the opening of the school year. Which of us does not quietly fear a massive shut-down of the educational system in our own particular district if sympathy walkouts should nuterialize. Which of us of voting age nas net agonized over millage elections as we tried to balance family budget with school budget needs. THERE WAS A FANTASY that I carried for years. It has to do with the search for a pure environment where people would operate out of the highest of motives and not be subject to the same kinds of forces and pressures that shaped other areas of human life. * CUMENCAL REFLECTIONS learned sooner than most was not such an envifor a long time I thought educational world was a ty. and accepted and in most cases attrionly the purest of move learned that there can environments where there e environments. Where involved, there is as great for sinking to the depths as ascending to the heights, of people invokes, by the presence of pohneither good nor bad— the way it is. BUT I 00 BELIEVE that the Gospel is nothing if it be totally removed from the affairs of men. So'I so believe there are Biblical issues worth raising in; the Crestwood situation. They are vjalue issues and four in number. •What is the value of education to a community? More specifically, what is the value of a teacher to a community? What premium do we place on a teacher's labor.? There has been an unspoken assumption that teachers and clergymen labor, not for money, but out of dedication, and that if we pay such people too much money it will somehow destroy the (dedication. Yet we do not blink an eye when Catfish Hunter sells himself to the New York Yankees for a pay package approximating (3.7 million To be sure, I understand the law of supply and demand. Apparently there Is not a readily-available supply of Catfish Hunters. In the same manner, we have grown somewhat accustomed to large contract settlements in industry. Yet wnehow we are quietly offended if teachers raise economic issues, even though few of us could be good teachers. •A second issue concerns teacher image. Is the teacher a laborer or a professional? Is the work a "calling" or a job? - There is no question that this whole matter of image is tainted by strikes. There is great student hostility toward not only the striking teachers but toward teachers in general because of this disruption. Teachers can argue that this hostility is fanned by parents. But the teachers must also bear a large part of the responsibility for bringing such hostility upon themselves. Teaching is more than a job, and somehow we must find a way to re- . ward it in a way that will bestow upon it the value it deserves. •The third issue involves what happens to a community under a system of contract bargaining that continually encourages disruption, and here I am speaking more broadly than Crestwood. I think several things happen. There is polarization, teachers set against teachers, and against the community they serve. But most significantly, teachers are polarized against children. The sad fact is that there must be some kneasure of both authority and respect for the teacher-learning relationship to exist. A still sadder fact is that such situations are ones in which children ultimately become pawns Some might say, "What is the turmoil of one year in an educational process that takes 13 years?" But what is the value of one year if it is your last year in high school? •The fourth issue asks what has happened to the role of communities in helping shape the education of their children. We talk romantically about keeping school districts both local and small so we will have a voice in what happens, and we fight state takeover because we prize community control. But we have a system—even in the smallest districts— in which we of the community are not actors or directors of education. We are reactors, and all too often in a negative voice. We are known more for the millages we defeat thai) the millages we pass. I suggest three small wtoys in which we may begin to move beyond such impasses in the future. •Let's build into the bargaining process— on paper at least—the right for teachers to strike, since the provision against striking is not only the most widely-ignored provision of the law that we have to day, but also because apparently it backs teachers into corners out of which they respond with more militant tactics than they might otherwise use. •Second, having written a right-tostrike provision, let's also specify in . the same manner procedures in which contracts must be negotiated, including clear time tables, fact-finding and binding arbitration after a certain passage of time. •Third, let us acknowledge that teachers, In their Tight for job security, must not be allowed to use tenure as, a rock to hide behind and ignore attempts at evaluation, review and accountability. The latter word may be a hair-raising one, but there are none of us free from the pressures of being evaluated in any walk of life, and we do not function effectively for long periods of time when we become too secure, IT IS TIME for all of us to reevaluate our positions in the interest of our common future.
