index (Φ′) was 2.230. The fish mature sexually for the first time at a total length of 13.20 cm<br />

(L50). The spawning season of comber was from March to May, with a peak in April.<br />

Conclusion. The comber grows rapidly attaining almost 75% of its linear growth during the<br />

first two years of life and then the growth slows down. The growth coefficient, (k), indicates<br />

slow attainment of maximum size because of significantly correlated to temperature of sea<br />

water, leading to a considerable variability in the life span between areas.<br />

Abstract: Age, growth, and reproduction of the large-scaled gurnard were studied in the<br />

central Aegean Sea to provide fisheries managers with the essential data for science-based<br />

management. A total of 2342 samples were collected by trawl hauls between July 2004 and<br />

June 2007 from İzmir Bay (Turkey). The size of the samples ranged from 3.4 to 15.2 cm total<br />

length and the samples were composed of 35.2% females, 25.7% males and 39.1% immature<br />

individuals, with a female to male ratio of 1:0.73. The length-weight relationship was<br />

calculated as W = 0.0086L3.16 for all samples. The age composition of the samples was from I<br />

to VI and the estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L∞ = 15.96 cm, W∞ = 54.35<br />

g, to = –0.018 year, and k = 0.483 year–1, with a growth performance index of 2.09 (ϕ').<br />

Reproduction started in February and continued to June. The total fecundity ranged from 503 to<br />

10,046 oocytes/female and showed a significant correlation with fish length and weight. The<br />

size at first maturity was estimated at 10.55 cm total length and the maturity age was found to<br />

be 2-year-old in both sexes.<br />

Abstract: Age, growth, spawning period and maturity of the solenette (Buglossidium luteum<br />

Risso, 1810) were studied in the central Aegean Sea to provide fisheries managers with<br />

essential data for science-based management. A total of 1220 samples were collected by trawl<br />

hauls from July 2004 to June 2007 in Izmir Bay (Turkey). Sample sizes ranging from 5.3 to<br />

11.6 cm total length were composed of 46% females, 32% males and 22% immature<br />

individuals, with a female to male ratio of 1 : 0.7. Age composition stages of the females were<br />

from I to IV, and males between I and III. The length–weight relationship was calculated as W<br />

= 0.0101L3.008 for all samples. Estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L∞= 13.30<br />

cm, to = -0.440 year and k = 0.481 year -1 , with a growth performance index of 1.93<br />

(ϕ'). The spawning period began in April and continued until July. Lengths at first maturity of<br />

females and males were 8.1 and 7.9 cm total length, respecti<strong>ve</strong>ly. Both sexes matured at the age<br />

of 2 years.
