index (Φ′) was 2.230. The fish mature sexually for the first time at a total length of 13.20 cm
(L50). The spawning season of comber was from March to May, with a peak in April.
Conclusion. The comber grows rapidly attaining almost 75% of its linear growth during the
first two years of life and then the growth slows down. The growth coefficient, (k), indicates
slow attainment of maximum size because of significantly correlated to temperature of sea
water, leading to a considerable variability in the life span between areas.

Abstract: Age, growth, and reproduction of the large-scaled gurnard were studied in the
central Aegean Sea to provide fisheries managers with the essential data for science-based
management. A total of 2342 samples were collected by trawl hauls between July 2004 and
June 2007 from İzmir Bay (Turkey). The size of the samples ranged from 3.4 to 15.2 cm total
length and the samples were composed of 35.2% females, 25.7% males and 39.1% immature
individuals, with a female to male ratio of 1:0.73. The length-weight relationship was
calculated as W = 0.0086L3.16 for all samples. The age composition of the samples was from I
to VI and the estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L∞ = 15.96 cm, W∞ = 54.35
g, to = –0.018 year, and k = 0.483 year–1, with a growth performance index of 2.09 (ϕ').
Reproduction started in February and continued to June. The total fecundity ranged from 503 to
10,046 oocytes/female and showed a significant correlation with fish length and weight. The
size at first maturity was estimated at 10.55 cm total length and the maturity age was found to
be 2-year-old in both sexes.

Abstract: Age, growth, spawning period and maturity of the solenette (Buglossidium luteum
Risso, 1810) were studied in the central Aegean Sea to provide fisheries managers with
essential data for science-based management. A total of 1220 samples were collected by trawl
hauls from July 2004 to June 2007 in Izmir Bay (Turkey). Sample sizes ranging from 5.3 to
11.6 cm total length were composed of 46% females, 32% males and 22% immature
individuals, with a female to male ratio of 1 : 0.7. Age composition stages of the females were
from I to IV, and males between I and III. The length–weight relationship was calculated as W
= 0.0101L3.008 for all samples. Estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L∞= 13.30
cm, to = -0.440 year and k = 0.481 year -1 , with a growth performance index of 1.93
(ϕ'). The spawning period began in April and continued until July. Lengths at first maturity of
females and males were 8.1 and 7.9 cm total length, respectively. Both sexes matured at the age
of 2 years.
